Some might say “move Battle to guard.” This logic is used too frequently and is a bit of a fallacy. I could absolutely be underestimating Battle’s skills, both functional and physical. Maybe a coach fixes the deficiencies, but I do not see more than a substitute player, at most.

Battle would be the 5th rated OT. He certainly has a better upside than many of our backups. We clearly have a need for more quality linemen. If he can be had for a 5th or 4th round pick next year this is an absolute no brainer.
You will find that Battle is highly intelligent and very athletic. He always talks about getting better as he previously had focused on playing basketball. He loves football. He states in on interview that he is 311 and will be 320 by Clemson's training sessions. He has long arms and quick feet with great coordination and a frame that is very well proportioned. If we spent next year's 3rd rounder and got the kid I'd be ecstatic after the Cowboys just got Collins for nothing. He is not a bad kid. He was raised in Flatbush, Brooklyn and went to a military academy in Va. so I believe he can handle being under TC. He got caught with a small amount of weed and punched a rival player on the field. I don't think he is a lost cause by any means. I would not be upset if we spent whatever pick we feel like we need to in order to secure his services. I believe he will be a very good NFL left tackle some day.

From a value standpoint was he worth it? To pick up a second in a current draft, you usually need to give up a future 1st rounder. So really you can say that getting him a year early was the equivalent of giving up a #2.

There were no quarterbacks in the 1st rounds in 1993 after Bledsoe/Mirer (look how Mirer turned out) so maybe if he stayed in school another year, he could've been the pick in 93 for us.
We've drafted 3 quarterbacks in the 1st round in over 35 years. I would say Simms was a huge hit. Brown a miss. Rivers was a huge hit that we turned into an enormous hit with the trade for Manning. Not a bad recod there.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the supplemental draft is multiple rounds. If you select a player in the 3rd round of the supplemental draft you forfeit that pick in the next draft.
Had Young waited to draft Brown past the 1st round he wouldn't have forfeited the Giants #1 pick for the following draft.

IMO, Brown wasn't the radar of any team within the first four rounds and perhaps not the entire draft. There was no reason for anybody to take him the first round of the supplemental draft.
as a 7th round pick only - teams haven't been drafting in the supplemental draft - and history shows they are all high risk picks - If you use a 7th and he works out - you're a genius -- if you use a 7th and he sucs - well no one can really blame you for trying -
....George Young saw in Dave Brown a tall athletic local guy who put up big numbers at Duke and thought he had potential an wanted to grab him because Simms was getting long in the tooth. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Now with modern scouting and today's current Giants managment would a guy like Brown get drafted? Most likely not.
But our #2 that year was Strahan. If we had a #1 and drafted a DL, maybe we don't pick MS with the second.
I'm perfectly fine with how things worked out.
