Arron Afflalo will sign a two year deal with the Knicks. His option on the second year. $16 million total.

What Are The Knicks Doing?

I’m just going to list some things the Knicks are doing.

The Knicks wanted to sign LaMarcus Aldridge.
But LaMarcus made them wait until last to meet with him.

They will see him tomorrow, maybe.
The Knicks think they can sign Greg Monroe, and met with him last night.
Monroe is a fine offensive player but will have to play alongside a 19-year-old who is very thin—and also Carmelo Anthony—and he is one of the worst defensive big men in the league.
The Knicks like his butt.
The Knicks would like to get Wes Matthews to play in the triangle, and presumably defend the perimeter. Wes Matthews is thinking it over while he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon, a bad injury for a guard.
The Knicks are meeting with Arron Afflalo tomorrow. Afflalo was a Portland Trail Blazer last year. He shot well from three and on spot-ups in general, but was well below average at every other facet of the game, per Synergy Sports.
The Knicks are expected to offer Afflalo “in the neighborhood of three years, $36 million-$38 million.”
The Knicks wanted to sign Danny Green, but they forgot to call him:
Sounds like Danny Green is hoping to meet with the Knicks soon as well, but may not be back from Brazil yet. The Knicks weren’t one of the teams to call him early on. I suspect Green is waiting for the Spurs to figure their other shit out before he has serious discussions with other teams, so said other teams may be waiting as well.
Danny signed with the Spurs this morning, for less than Thad Young makes now.
The Knicks did remember to call Patrick Beverley, who is bad.
They also called Corey Brewer, who is a 3-and-D guy who shot 26 percent from three last season, and currently is a backup plan for the Sacramento Kings.
They called Willie Green twice this morning before Danny Green signed with the Spurs.
The Knicks have reached out to Jeremy Lin, whom the Kings are also interested in signing.
The Kings, you will remember, were one of the teams jostling to draft Frank Kaminsky. They have been battling with the Knicks this whole offseason to get players who are in some demand. This is like when teams know that the Spurs or Rockets are interested in a player, and then try to get the same player because they know he will be good, except for a few minor differences.
The Knicks have reached out to Kendrick Perkins, who is a mop languishing in a bucket of dirty, fetid water.
The Knicks have reached out to Landry Fields, who is spending this offseason learning to shoot with his left hand.
(Landry Fields, who already shot like his parents made him do math problems in his head before he was allowed to release the shoot button, is learning to shoot with his non-dominant hand, because he forgot how to shoot and play in general.)
The Knicks are very interested in DeAndre Jordan, and their plan to sign him is to promise to make him the second option on offense, behind Carmelo Anthony.
DeAndre Jordan, you will remember, cannot shoot or pass or dribble, which are things that you do on offense.
DeAndre Jordan had a four-and-a-half-hour meeting with the Mavericks today, and has been out to dinner with Chandler Parsons for five nights in a row. (Five date rule, I guess.) Anyway, DeAndre’s meeting with the Knicks has not happened yet.
The Knicks thought they might sign DeMarre Carroll. They used to have another player named the Junkyard Dog.
The current JYD signed with the Raptors.
Phil Jackson thought that he might be able to sign Paul Millsap, because he is good at defense, rebounding, and passing, which are things the Knicks need.
Paul Millsap re-signed with the Hawks.
The Knicks are showing late interest in Derrick Williams, who is a poor shooter who also cannot rebound or pass.
The Knicks were interested in David West, who will be 35 when the season starts. Word was they wanted to sign him to a three-year contract. They were “very likely” to sign him just a few days ago.
David West said he doesn’t want to play for the Knicks, because they are bad and he is old, which honestly sounds like a good reason the Knicks should also consider.
The Knicks want to sign Robin Lopez too, and are planning on meeting with him.
Robin Lopez has reportedly met with the Bucks.*
Last season, Knicks traded Tyson Chandler away, in part because Phil Jackson was not sure he was a good fit for the triangle offense, and in part to dump Raymond Felton’s contract. He took back Samuel Dalembert, whom the Knicks waived for saying true things, and Jose Calderon.
Raymond Felton makes $4.5 million this season, the last year of his deal.
Jose Calderon makes $7.4 million this season, and $7.7 million next season.
Tyson Chandler signed with the Suns for four years and $52 million, because he is good.
The Knicks are interested in K.J. McDaniels, who could not hack it as a Philadelphia 76er.
Wayne Ellington and Caron Butler, too.
The Knicks are a team that does not have a draft pick next year, and are building around a 31-year-old with knee issues. They are on the clock, yet drafted a young stretch big—the riskiest phenotype in NBA prospects—and now need to plug a 90-pound 7-footer into an NBA defense that features Melo and probably Monroe, and has not ruled out bringing back Jason Smith and mother fucking Bargs.
The Knicks are just ignoring reality and the rules of the physical universe around them.
The Knicks are bullshit.

NYPOST-

The Knicks also have a meeting set up in L.A. with shooting guard Arron Afflalo, who is friends with Carmelo Anthony, and defensive center Robin Lopez.
The Knicks, however, still didn’t have Monroe in the bag and hopefully for Jackson’s sake, he’s not thinking along the lines of free agent David West, whom The Post reported wasn’t interested in the woebegone Knicks. The Indy Star quoted West on Wednesday, calling the rumors “ridiculous’’ because the Knicks don’t “qualify’’ as “a contender.’’

Does anyone know
colin : 7/2/2015 10:10 am : link
the timing for the LMA and Jordan meetings? I know "today," but is it the evening? I can't imagine Monroe or Jordan sign anywhere until LMA picks his landing spot.
Meh
Deej : 7/2/2015 10:10 am : link
I think the Knicks have an offer out to Monroe. They met him at 12:01 on 7/1. If he says yes than they tell LMA and Jordan that they have no more capspace.

Im curious as to why LMA is meeting with us. I dont think he would just want to waste our time. He doesnt want to play center which is tough for us, but center in the East isnt like center in the West. Melo, Aldridge, AA, Grant, Porz -- if that happens and things develop nicely, we're a prime landing spot for next year (Durant, Horford, Drummond (RFA; S&T for Porz if he wants out).
Affalo
DanMetroMan : 7/2/2015 10:11 am : link
“Afflalo tends to be a little selfish,’’ one personnel director said. “And he’s been in a lot of losing environments.”
Afflalo, who will turn 30 in October, was drafted by Detroit with the 27th pick in 2007 out of UCLA. He played three seasons with Denver, a little more than half of that with Anthony before the star forward was shipped to the Knicks in February 2011. Afflalo, who also spent two seasons with the Magic, has a career scoring average of 11.4 points. He finished last season at 13.3, splitting his season between Denver and Portland, where he was traded to fill Matthews’ role after Matthews ruptured his Achilles.
“I would be a bit nervous going long-term with Afflalo,” one NBA executive said. “He has a bit of wear and tear on his body.”-berman
An offseason with Monroe, Afflalo, and Ro Lo/Koufos
AnotherGiantsFan : 7/2/2015 10:12 am : link
Is perfectly fine with me. That makes for a competitive team next year and doesn't put us in deep cap shit.

Well if LMA doesn't want to play C, but wants to join the Knicks, then they could just go bargain shopping for one of the remaining guys. And stretch Calderon if need be to get a few extra million.
I think we are all hopeful for the improbable

But to focus on LMA and the Spurs for second.

Duncan, Manu, Parker are all nearly done. Pop is 66.

Granted, Leonard is great and Green is solid, but that situation isn't as ideal as people make it out to be.

Matter of fact, the Phoenix roster is more attractive to me.

The NYK roster isn't close, but do Affaolo and Robin Lopez change that landscape?

And yet they were arguably a top 3-4 team in the NBA last year and most of the team is returning (sans Splitter) plus Leonard is still peaking. A core of LMA/Leonard with Pop coaching will have a chance every year. And 66 isn't that old.
Knicks do have a lot of guards right now
nygiants16 : 7/2/2015 10:23 am : link
If they are confident in Grant or Galloway...

If Aldridge wants a cente, you can cut Calderon and free up an extra 4 million and sign a vet to be the banger down low, plus Knicks would have room exception left to...

One thing that makes you think the Knicks think they will use all their cap space...

They have called guys like Willie Green and Derrick Williams, guys who are not going to make much more than the vet minimum...
Afflalo for 3 years at 36 is bad
Deej : 7/2/2015 10:23 am : link
but we didnt give him that contract. 16/2 is what qualifies as a bargain in the 7-1-15 NBA.

4 years ago Afflalo had a sterling reputation. People were talking about him as a bottom of the top 10 at SG. Then the Melo trade happened and Denver was just a hodgepodge of assets with Afflalo miscast as the #1b player there. He's moved in the D12 trade to a rebuilding Orlando and again miscast by default as the #1 option. Then he's traded back to Denver (how bad could he be if they wanted him back?). Denver is a shit show and he is AGAIN miscast as a 1b lead dog with Lawson. And then Portland gives up a #1 for him and he really struggles there.

So the only thing at all alarming about Afflalo is why he struggled so bad in Portland. Everything else is explainable by recognizing that in no world should Afflalo be your best player.

Maybe Afflalo and Aldridge really are that close and that is why Phil signed him this morning before the meeting, maybe he is going to bring him to the meeting as another voice...

If we don't get Monroe, we could take a 1st round pick + his salary and just sign a defensive center and look for next year with an extra pick.

Not me. I couldn't take that deal fast enough.
People discount the Spurs way too much

Sure Pop, Duncan, Parker and Ginobili are old. But a former Spurs assistant just won coach of the year and 60 games with a bunch of thought-to-be misfits. Kawhi and LMA are on another tier above any of the Hawks players. If you want to bet this team drops to a 35 win team without Pop go ahead. I'm not betting against the Spurs.
I'd prefer to keep Early

I'd take Lee and a pick. Mostly to get the pick and have Lee to flip during the season if possible. It's pretty troubling that he didnt get any run this year in the playoffs. If you cant get run on a title team, then you cant be paid 8 figures, right? I mean, what's the point?

The Kings just gave the Sixers Stauskas, a future 1st, and the right to swap picks in TWO future drafts, so I don't think a Looney and a 1st is out of the question.
Although

I only put Early because I didn't think we could give them nothing. And he's the only guy with a salary we can trade who doesnt play if I'm not mistaken.

I don't look at Early as much of an asset and Lee is off the books after this upcoming season. It's not like it's a long-term commitment.

It also depends what happens with Monroe/LMA/DJ. Obviously I wouldn't give up the 15+ in space before I knew about those guys.

Based on the Sacto return, a #1 and Looney isnt enough. But Vlade doesnt know what he's doing.

In any event, if we dont get a good FA, might as well use the space to start building an asset base. Knicks' depth is a massive joke. It's horrific. Get assets like #1s, promising guys, 3-and-D potentials and you may have something in a few years.

I want 2 firsts and maybe even a couple of second rounders. There's precedent for this. Kurt Thomas was once traded by the Suns when they were looking to dump money for two first rounders and he wasn't making nearly as much money...and the luxury tax penalties weren't nearly as harsh as they are now.

I think this is a solid signing for the Knicks. He's a small piece who plays competent basketball on a short-term, reasonable contract.
