I know a group of Jet fans (who are brothers)who actually root for the patriots. During the season they hate them but in the playoffs they root for them. The reasoning is they are a great org and you can't hate them. Also, that there is no law that says you have to hate teams in your division. I argue because I said I hate they cowboys. they ask why and i said Jerry Jones, the fans, how the media blows them up to be better than they are etc. I was told those are not good reasons.
One of their friends (a giants fan) agreed with them saying he doesn't hate the cowboys.
I asked this so called giants fan if he was a Yankee fan too and he was. I followed up with "so you could root for the red sox?" and she said hell no. so WTF is the difference. Obviously he isn't that big a giants fan.
They said i was the only one who thinks like that (about hating division teams). it was like arguing with a wall.
BBI, do you respect a fan who roots for their division rivals? or am I in the twilight zone.

Exactly, only when a win by them will directly help Big Blue.

If value wise, NFC East player is the best option when it's my pick, then I select them and trade them early in the season.
If the leagues were set up with piece, love and respect in mind, no one would really care if their team won.
I find that sporting events are far more interesting if you have a good reason to root for one team over the other.
The Jets fans that you spoke with may have been drunk or stoned at that discussion.
There is no way in hell that I could root for the #*$%^@## Cowflops. Ever.

Yup
If we are out of it and "their" team is in, I root for those fans.
That includes all teams, not just those from the NFC east.

You have a bad attitude. You should always torment fans of non-Giant teams in the NFC East, always. If your mother is an Eagles/Cows/Skins fans, she should be tormented just as if she's not your mom.
That was an entirely different age of football and hard to imagine any part of me ever rooted for them.
I think if the NFL changed to a worlds league and each country had one team representing them and America's was the Cowboys I would probably root for the Canadian team for the first couple of season rather than root for them. That is how strong I currently dislike the team and Jerry Jones.

Back in the early 80's my dad and his buddies told me they always pull for the other NFC East teams after the skins were out of it (yes my whole family is skins fans, I'm the sole Giants fan). And it didn't sit well with me. I've never understood that thinking. All it does is allow your biggest rivals to shit talk you for longer than just the week they may have defeated your team.

Yeah, I could never accept that mindset either. There is a certain logic to wanting to show that your team is in the toughest division by having a division rival win it all, but I just can't do it. I can't hate those guys for the whole season and then flip a switch and root for them.
I didn't know Deion Sanders represented the entire 49er franchise?
Now I feel better.
Staubach....Aikman....the Pukes have kicked our ass like no one else...
Washington had one good run...Eagles never won a thing...
is some of the worst fan-logic ever and its bullshit. What they're really saying is "we grew up watching the Jets but we want to experience success so we now like the Pats".
this basically sums it up.
I guess if the Cowboys were playing the Eagles, and if the Eagles lost the Giants would make the playoffs, I could root for the Cowboys.
Or if I owned the team. Or a piece of it.
But since I wouldn't buy the Cowboys, I guess the only way I could ever own part of the team would be for Jerry Jones to leave it to me in his will. But before he'd do that, I'd have to be super-close friends with Jerry Jones, like, close as a son, since he already has a son and shit, who would normally, you know, inherit the team. And that would mean I'd have to spend a lot of time hanging around with Jerry Jones, including hanging out in his owners box, cheering for the Cowboys, sitting with Chris Christie. But I don't want to sit with Chris Christie, and I wouldn't cheer for the Cowboys, so I won't hang around in the owners box with Jerry Jones, so I'll never be his BFF, so I won't be in his will, so I'll never own any part of the team, so I'll never cheer for them.
Unless the Giants need them to win. In which case, HOW 'BOUT THEM....
Aw crap, can't do it.
I could never root for an NFC rival unless:
1) Their win directly improves the Giants playoff chances
2) One of them is playing another (I gotta root for someone)
3) They are not in the playoffs and playing a team I hate more and a win will not impact the Giants playoffs chances.
I use the word selectively and appropriately.
I don't know why rooting for The Giants or any team would lead someone to "hate" another team.
I just hated Harbaugh and what they've done of late. Cry babies after we beat them in 2011 with special teams. The Pats cheat. Period.

WOW. You definitely hit the nail on the head. That must be why.
