Troy Aikman: "I've chosen not to date men"

aquidneck : 7/3/2015 7:26 am
Old news, but first time I've seen it. Guy presenting the clip not pleased with Aikman's use of "choice."

OTOH, being closeted obviously is a choice. Now that marriage equality is law of the land maybe there will be less stigma and shame forcing people to make less than satisfying "choices."

Would it be so bad to be first gay QB I in NFL HOF?

The riots in Baltimore, the horrible hate crimes like what just happened down south, this whole gay situation, etc. All men are created equal but too many feel the need to judge others and judge them on the dumbest reasons. I'm not blaming you for posting this article. I just don't get the point of writing the article. What is the point?
Troy Aikman doesn't owe you anything
Greg from LI : 7/3/2015 7:44 am : link
And who he dates is no one's business but his own.
Most here are for gay rights
Headhunter : 7/3/2015 7:50 am : link
but when someone talks about being gay, duck and cover
You see...
Zepp : 7/3/2015 7:52 am : link
he didn't say he didn't choose that to be his lifestyle he said it just isn't his lifestyle. Nothing in his quote screams out to me that he's a closeted homosexual. He might very well be but who the hell cares.

On the whole choice thing, if you really believe its a choice then that means tomorrow you can wake up and be in the mood for some hairy ass. You know just like some mornings you're in the mood for pancakes. Sounds ridiculous doesn't it? Thats why its not a choice.
Is Aikman

A tortured soul? Is his career his lover?
You're allowed to be and say that you're gay (or straight or neither)
Bill L : 7/3/2015 7:56 am : link
you're not required to. Shame on people.
Maybe he inclines toward dudes...
Dunedin81 : 7/3/2015 7:57 am : link
Maybe he doesn't. He can choose to act on that inclination or not (if he has it), that is his prerogative. It is a rather modern conceit to suppose that sex is the only thing that matters, or that whatever sexual inclination is not overborn by his desire for domesticity or religious life or whatever matters to him. If he is happy, his refusal to live as you would have him live in light of his perceived predilections is not really any of your business.

As long as we can both agree women are inferior I agree.
He didn't say that, misleading...
Britt in VA : 7/3/2015 8:00 am : link
That shouldn't be in quotes, that's the author's bold interpretation of what he said.
Was there ever a published poll of gay men
Headhunter : 7/3/2015 8:01 am : link
if given the choice would they choose to be gay? I think back in the deep closet days most who say no to much of a hassle. I wonder if they polled today?

On a serious note
Scyber : 7/3/2015 8:15 am : link
This language is simply a natural progression of thinking homosexuality is a choice. If you profess that, then logically you have to believe that heterosexuality is a choice too.

The guy who wrote that
Matt M. : 7/3/2015 9:07 am : link
is no better than Bayless' book years ago, which I had forgotten about. There were always "rumors" about Aikman. I put it in quotes because I always thought it was mostly jealous fan generated because he was winning and a pretty boy. He might be gay, he might be closeted, he might be straight. I don't care what he is other than a very good QB and now a very good analyst. Leave the guy alone. Plus, he is currently married, so leave his family in peace.
I am so disappointed with myself...
okiegiant : 7/3/2015 9:10 am : link
because I clicked the link(driving up their traffic)and skimmed the article.

What a waste of time in a very finite life. I'm not completely sure what the writer was trying to convey to us.
Aikman made his choice
SGMen : 7/3/2015 9:29 am : link
Being "gay" or having gay feelings isn't a choice. I can't identify with those feelings so I don't speak to the subject much but I do know you choose to act on your feelings or not in any area of your life.

If Aikman chooses not to "date" or whatever that is his choice and may not come from stigma but from his internal barometer of values, feelings, choice, etc.

Not for us to say cause last I looked none of us are God and in a position to judge the human heart? Am I wrong he guys and gals??
This is terrible journalism
PaulBlakeTSU : 7/3/2015 9:48 am : link
The person who wrote that article should be condemned for his horribly misleading headline. Troy did not say this, and twisting his words to create this implication is damaging and unprofessional.

Aquidneck, you should delete this post because your headline is even worse by the use of your quotation marks. Troy never said those words, but one would think he did by seeing this thread title. You either didn't read the piss-poor article, or you did and are fabricating (intentionally or not) something that Aikman never said.

I'm not going to delete because this is all very public at this point and Aikman has addressed it directly. I think you're right about the sloppy misleading writing, however, and have to admit to some sloppy reading as I skimmed over the article myself and didn't notice that the Aikman remarks were not a direct quote.

I actually agree with what Dunedin and others have said, ie that there are multiple reasons for making choices and sexual orientation might not be first on everyone's priority list. Why should I or anyone else assume it should be?

Either way, it's personal to the extent that it's not my life. Hopefully Aikman gets to make his choices without concern about whatever anyone might think. And I'd like to address your post directly at this point, Paul, as irresponsible as the article may have been why is the headline's implication inherently "damaging?"

Of course the idea that choice is personal, cuts two ways. Unfortunately, if you're closeted for social reasons you're already making choices based on the opinions of others.

Bottom line, I'm not going to delete the thread because it's a worthy discussion. Aikman is a public figure and can carry the weight of attention associated with the dialogue.

There are definite pluses to being gay
Headhunter : 7/3/2015 3:44 pm : link
first and foremost you don't have to deal with a women after sex. You can wear each other's clothes. You don't have to listen to a story that should take 2 minutes tops turn into a half an hour saga. You get into an argument you will know exactly why you are arguing.
no getting yelled at for leaving the toilet seat up
chris r : 7/3/2015 3:48 pm : link
either.

Aikman may not have thought this one through all the way.

The thread title is totally misleading
GeofromNJ : 7/4/2015 1:48 am : link
Aikman said this. "If that is a lifestyle people choose, so be it. It doesn't affect me one way or another. But it is not my lifestyle." This statement is hardly the same thing as saying, "I choose not to date men." Aikman is saying that if being gay is a lifestyle choice, it's not his choice. And if it's not a lifestyle choice, it's not him. Seems to me to be a fairly straightforward denial.
You'd think after 20 years of persistent rumors
jawebb20 : 7/4/2015 2:29 am : link
He'd answer the question unambiguously.

I'm not gay.

Instead, he shrouds his retort in a manner that leaves the door open for a variety of interpretations. Chiefly, is he actually gay but chooses to lead a heterosexual life that is at odds with his actual sexual identity?

Count me in the tally that says "he's gay" but too scared to admit it because of public and professional identity is built under the guise of a phony persona that is now has become too large to simply throw away.

Be damned if it doesnt advance the civil rights of millions of people around the world but instead preserves the hegemony of the 100 million dollar printing press that I sit on.

That's the entire problem, he doesnt present a straight forward denial.

CHoosing not to date men is not equal to proclaiming that he isnt gay
