Dave Klein is reporting that ex- Giant Pete Athas passed away on Tuesday at 68. I have not been able to find any other notice of this. Could someone check into it?

Roomed with Rocky Thompson (quite a pair!) Always loved Pete as a player and personality. Anti-authoritarian (not a great thing to be on a football team.) I remember once in training camp in NJ when he was being razzed by the fans in the stands, so he very openly gave them all the finger. After he retired from football, Pete later posed with an extremely hot babe in Penthouse Magazine. Ahh, the 70's. You had to be there!
Wow Tom Longo starting SS in 1970 passed away at 73

Athas joining the team in 1971 helped move Longo off the roster

got his jaw broken as a Dallas rookie in 1970 training camp fight with his teammate Reggie Rucker. His injury was probably the reason he did not make the team. They both wound up with the Giants in 1971.

Ahh, sorry to hear this.

His tenure with the Giants was around the time I started following the team. Of course, it being the 70's and all, his demeanor kind of resonated with me. Their Training Camp was at Monmouth College in those days, so I would stop to watch them practice. (I'm sure Pete knew all the best night spots in Long Branch.)

When he led the team in INT's for a few years, I was certain we stole a player from the hated Cowboys. RIP Pete.

He could hit with the best of them. His coverage was a little shaky.
The talent needy Giants brought in a lot of Cowboys

as a young boy at joe Namath football camp. If I knew how to post pics I would put 1 up. I forget the college it was held at... but He was a very nice guy to all of us kids. other counselers for the week I was there included Rocky Blier, Bob Tucker, Winston Hill, John Dockery, Jim Kiick, and there were a couple others as well. But Pete was "a dude" and was very nice..Rocky Blier was amazing and Winston Hill was also a lot of fun. RIP Mr Pete Athas.
Didn't the NFL adopt the Athas Rule due to his tactic ....

of jumping up on a team mate's back to attempt to block field goals? I thought I remembered them outlawing the practice because of him. Anyone else remember that?
