NFT: Knicks Chat: Robin Lopez joins the squad!

DanMetroMan : 7/3/2015 11:01 am
Jordan says the Knicks are out so...

Robin Lopez has committed to the Knicks and will sign with them unless DeAndre Jordan chooses the Knicks.
In other words, Lopez is on the Knicks. While Lopez won't come cheap, he is actually a very good fit with them. He ranked third in the NBA for offensive rebounds in the 2013-14 season, he doesn't have many fouling issues, he's been very healthy in his career and he'll have a low usage rate on offense, which Carmelo Anthony will like. Lopez did have a down year in 2014-15, but he could wind up being a mid-round guy in standard leagues next season.

Maybe the mavs need to clear some room. Anything we want on their roster, preferably cheap and tall?

Mavs have 30 mil in space

Matthews is only getting 10?

Anyone got a list of the best remaining FAs?
Deej : 7/3/2015 5:30 pm : link
Needs a 4/5, a wing defender, and a shooter (like the whole league, I know).
Man...
AnotherGiantsFan : 7/3/2015 5:38 pm : link
I like Robin Lopez. I think he fits this team really well and will help KP a ton in the learning process. He was one of the guys I was hoping we'd target before FA started. But never in a million years did I think we'd be signing him to that kind of money.

It's hard to give an opinion with how money is being handed out this offseason. But that seems like an overpay in any market. 13.5 a year for a defensive center.
It would have been great to get LMA
robbieballs2003 : 7/3/2015 5:41 pm : link
But as time passes I'm glad we got Lopez. Give me guys that want to be here. I'm tired of us trying to sell NY. If you want to be here then awesome. If not, get the fuck out.
For all the shit
Chris684 : 7/3/2015 5:52 pm : link
Phil has gotten, I'd like to hear what other ideas people have....given the situation he walked into. The biggest mistake so far in my view was winning the 2 games last week of the season, whether or not that comes back to bite us in the ass depends on the development of KP (who the majority seems to like).

People complain about Carmelo but I actually believe he takes more criticism than he should. Let's see him with a better roster around him. If you were to create a list of players you wouldn't let walk away from you in FA, I think Melo is in that class.

As for this offseason, the additions of Grant, AA and Lopez seem like smart and reasonable acquisitions at positions of need. We can't completely suck this season without our draft pick. We needed to improve but also keep next off season in mind. I think a 6-8 seed is a realistic expectation.
I don't know how he does it
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 7/3/2015 5:59 pm : link
but Chandler Parsons is a master recruiter. He was one of the big reasons Dwight came to the Rockets and he supposedly did even more work to convince DeAndre to come to the Mavs. Partying with Chandler is apparently some sort of life-changing experience. I think CP3 being a little Napoleon Complex having douche really did play a role in DeAndre leaving, because in Dallas the best players (Dirk, Parsons) are both cool dudes and I think DeAndre preferred that environment to Paul's bitching.

@WojYahooNBA: Free agent Corey Brewer has agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal to return to the Houston Rockets, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.

Agreed on Brewer

Okay

I would like to take a shot on Derrick Williams, who sounds like a priority for us right now. Should be cheap and has high upside.

Agreed. Reminds me of Michael Beasley a lot which is kind of scary but there's a reason he was the #2 overall even if it was a bad draft. The due played for the wolves, Kings and the Pistons in the worst possible situations so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

My wish list with the remaining cap is either O'Quinn or Williams.

Wanna go after Gerald Green with the MLE.

Also, I read somewhere that Tobias Harris is considering of taking the qualifying offer if he doesn't get a deal he likes so he can enter free agency next year. Theoretically, could we offer him a 1 year deal that's more than his qualifying offer so he can come here?
Harris's qualifying is $4.4 million
giantsfan44ab : 7/3/2015 6:33 pm : link
Wouldn't it be a lot better for him to take $6-7 million for 1 year with our remaining cap dollars?
I doubt u r getting green
Italianju : 7/3/2015 6:38 pm : link
For the mini MLE

As for Harris if we signed him to that then ORL would just match. Got to offer him at least 10 per but prolly closer to the max of 15
I really have a lot of respect for Lopez after this FA period.
robbieballs2003 : 7/3/2015 6:44 pm : link
Who was the last FA that agreed to terms with a team but that deal was contingent upon another player signing here at the same position. This wasn't like LeBron and everybody else. This is a slightly better player in Jordan we are talking about. You never see this.
Lopez wants to be here (and even
Ash_3 : 7/3/2015 6:48 pm : link
if he's being paid handsomely to do so) it would be surprising if other teams weren't offering similar terms. If and when this squad becomes a contender again, I hope he's around.
Knicks still seem to have interest in mcdaniels
Italianju : 7/3/2015 6:52 pm : link
And with Hou resigning brewer they might be hesitant to match an offer. I don't really know a ton about him but it seems like he still has some upside.

He's from LA, went to school in Stanford, and there were claims he didn't want to play in the same city as his brother (idk why) but still chose us over the Lakers

What about a sign and trade? We send Calderon, Early, and Mario Hezongawhatever over for him at the max. They get 2 prospects, a trade exception, and a backup PG/3 point shooter that their roster is currently lacking.

Where did you see claims he didn't want to play in the same city as his brother? There have been reports on the complete opposite. They are incredibly close and chose to go to the same college. Seems like Brook staying here played a huge role into why he wanted to be here IMO.

They don't have bird rights so have to match using cap space or exceptions..with brewer back have to think they let him go
In a vacuum I like KJ McDaniels
AnotherGiantsFan : 7/3/2015 7:13 pm : link
But it seems a bit repetitive to have both KJ and Thanasis. They offer the same qualities as players/athletes, but KJ has done it in the NBA. I'd rather just save our money and hope Thanasis can do it in the NBA as well.

Someone on here put a report or a quote on it. Sounded weird. Don't know if it's true or not. Doesn't really matter though, he's a knick now whether or not he does or doesn't want to be near Brook and he chose us over his hometown team, which is the Lakers, making it all the better.
We really don't know if he chose us over the Lakers
AnotherGiantsFan : 7/3/2015 8:32 pm : link
Or just chose more money over less money. Per year, Ro Lo is earning more than both Tyson and Asik. It's not a given by any means that the Lakers were willing to cough up 13.5 per year for Ro Lo.

Again, I like him so I'm not mad or anything. But let's be realistic here. We're paying the man a lot of money. That's why he chose us.
you think the Lakers
giantsfan44ab : 7/3/2015 8:38 pm : link
Didn't offer him as much cuz they are trying to tank to keep their pick now they missed out on the big free agents?
I just think that teams may not want to pay more than
AnotherGiantsFan : 7/3/2015 8:47 pm : link
What they think a player is worth. Maybe even more so considering their circumstance. It makes more sense for us to overvalue Lopez because his game should make KP's life easier while he's trying to acclimate himself to the NBA.

Does it really make sense for the Lakers to pay a B grade player that much money? What is he really going to do for them? Maybe they are taking the "we'll get em next time" approach.

Or maybe I'm dead wrong and both teams offered the same money and he chose the Knicks. But the fact that Ro Lo was the third big man signed and got the most money per year tells me that we won a bidding war.
Wow.

Good point
giantsfan44ab : 7/3/2015 9:14 pm : link
But the Lakers seem to have tons of cap space and I'm order to lure a major free agent they'd need something at center. Would've certainly helped their pursuit for LMA. Now it looks their left in the dust, and their pick is now top 3 protected.

All the knicks needed to do..

was cut Calderon and they would have had 11 mill in capspace. That was the easy part, the bigger issue was that even when it was said ORL wouldnt match a max offer (obviously they would) an offer of 11 would have def been matched.
