an outrageous overpay if true.

there's no such thing as an outrageous overpay.

ehh see what happens i guess...could start at the 3/4 next to Melo and Lopez...

So roster looks like this so far:

Calderon/Galloway
Afflalo/Grant/Ledo
Melo/Early/Thanasis
Williams/Porzingis
Lopez
Nice pick up
charlito : 7/3/2015 11:07 pm : link
.like his toughness and Rolo's toughness too. Just hope Porzingis can handle New York.
Outrageous overpay?
BigBlueShock : 7/3/2015 11:10 pm : link
First of all,Mohave you sen the money getting thrown around? And secondly, it's essentially a one year contract. Where else was that money going?
Have you seen

Isn't 5 mil close to the league minimum??

Knicks need to unearth some quality role players out of nowhere. Hopefully this is one..

Uh, no. Minimum salary is a scale based on service. Top minimum for a player with 10+ Years is @ $1.5 million. For a player with his experience it's a bit over $1 million.

His salary is around the NBA average.

Nice pick up. Really athletic, strong guy who can run the floor,
yatqb : 7/3/2015 11:32 pm : link
jump and shoot.
He's really young
Big Rick in FL : 7/3/2015 11:45 pm : link
So hopefully he can finally show why he was the #2 pick in the draft.

A guy like Williams is exactly why I can't understand how people get mad at the Porzingis pick. Idc if he's a Euro, college or HS player that black, white or Spanish. A ton of them become complete busts. Way more then the NFL. Glad we took a chance on the only other player with All-NBA potential outside of Karl-Anthony Towns IMO
Well, I really like Russell too, but I'm happy we took Porzingis
yatqb : 7/3/2015 11:48 pm : link
over Mudiay, particularly with the Grant trade.

Grant's not Mudiay, but he's a great distributor and can penetrate too, albeit not as spectacularly as Mudiay.
Is this the Derrick Williams the Nets had a connection with?

He was a beast at Arizona

I'm hoping that we land a backup C who can rebound.
yatqb : 7/4/2015 12:20 am : link
We're still really thin at C, even if Porzingis gives us some minutes there, which is not ideal at this point.
Never give
CromartiesKid21 : 7/4/2015 12:33 am : link
player options to players that don't warrant it. If he breaks out, he will opt out. If he sucks, he will opt in.

Aldrich fits that description. Hopefully we can bring him back.
Agree on Aldrich
Anakim : 7/4/2015 4:04 am : link
I'll take him or Henry Sims at a cheap price over Perkins. Can we still manage to get Biyombo?

What gives you the impression that Porzingis can't handle NY? Have you watched his interviews, interactions with the media? He seems quite comfortable.

I lived in Tucson so I'm an Arizona fan and watch their basketball team closely. Thought he would turn into a productive player in the NBA, here's hoping he can figure it out as a Knick
He still had some beastly moments

Sweet stroke. Surprised his 3p% isn't higher. Maybe he'll break out.

What's his defensive reputation?

This. I hate player options generally, but 1+1 really makes no sense for Williams. We're not winning anything in 2015, so all we've done really is saddle ourselves with a guy who could be a huge bust for us.

Im just not feeling this signing at this price.
I was really hoping he would cost...
Italianju : 7/4/2015 8:15 am : link
like 2/7 or something, but im not going to get worked up about a couple mill. I like that we continue to get younger and obviously williams still has some upside.

Hopefully the cap is 2 mill higher as Berger said might be the case. That would leave us with another 4.5 or so which could net another solid role player. Id like to see us bring in one more big and have Alrdich back.
Nice pick up..
Sean : 7/4/2015 8:20 am : link
it seems like the cap increase is helping the marginal players more than the elite players. A guy like LeBron should be making Rinaldo money, but instead a guy like Robin Lopez sees the increase.
I've
Jon in NYC : 7/4/2015 8:32 am : link
been pretty pro-Williams this offseason, but I was expecting a 1 year 3 mil prove something type of deal. We just saddled ourselves with another issue next year assuming he opts in and doesnt produce.
I
thomasa510 : 7/4/2015 8:33 am : link
Williams is a gamble but if he can get his head on right this team could be fairly decent and ready next year with an free agency pickup, to compete.

Without him I don't see much offense being generated outside of melo
With the salary cap going up next year
BigBlueShock : 7/4/2015 8:40 am : link
There is virtually zero chance that Williams opts in next season. Even the scrubbiest of scrubs will be getting payed. Heck, look at this off season. Salaries are insane. And even in the very remote chance that Williams is so awful that he feels he won't be able to find a better deal than 1 year 5 Million, that is still hardly a back breaker with the cap going up. It will have no effect on what the Knicks want to do either way
The key
Jon in NYC : 7/4/2015 8:47 am : link
to Williams' success is going to be upping his 3pt % and becoming a better rebounder. He's still young and both are still totally possible, but it's hard to see him having a bigger role until then.

If he has a crappy year, he's opting in. And 5 million next year will still feel like 3.5-4 million this year, which is material. For example, with another 4 million this year we could have signed Aldridge and Lopez, or Monroe plus one of the $15 million wings.
I just read
Jon in NYC : 7/4/2015 8:54 am : link
that he's made 40% of his corner 3s since leaving Minnesota, which is a small sample size, but Phil loves him some corner 3.
I like these moves
blueblood : 7/4/2015 9:10 am : link
not flashy but gets veteran players on the floor without screwing up the cap a lot the next few years. The exact opposite of what the Knicks have done the last 15 years.
So how much money do we have?
giantsfan44ab : 7/4/2015 9:29 am : link
If we could get Biyombo on a similar deal that would be interesting. If not, Aldrich at the min should do it. Who are candidates for the MLE? It seems like $2.5 wont be able to get anything in this market. Gerald green or Wes Johnson? It wouldn't be the worst thing if we didn't get a backup SF. Bring back Shved and Aldrich and I think this roster is finalized.
How's
Semipro Lineman : 7/4/2015 9:35 am : link
his defense?
giantsfan
nygiants16 : 7/4/2015 9:36 am : link
Between 2-4 million depending on what the cap is....if its 70 they will have another 5 million plus they have the room exception which is 2.8 million

Not very good but with Lopez Knicks will at least have a rim protector next to him and melo

On the offensive end it is a good fit...if they are playing a team that has 2 bigs..who does the pf guard?
Id really prefer Aldrich
Italianju : 7/4/2015 9:38 am : link
Be our 3rd center. In this market I doubt u get biyombo but maybe.

Williams D is pretty crappy I believe but that is just off memory. I have nothing o back that up
O'Quinn could be a target
giantsfan44ab : 7/4/2015 9:44 am : link
If we have $5 mil. Nice triangle big that can provide defense.
I've followed Williams since his days at Arizona
JoeyBigBlue : 7/4/2015 9:46 am : link
And he's been a disappointment so far. He's a 3/4 tweener. He's not big enough to play the 4 and he can't defend 3s.

His strength at Arizona was his jumpshot but it's been inconsistent in the NBA. He is a can rebound the basketball if given enough minutes. He's a very poor passer. Worst aspect of his game.
Yahoo says Knicks acquired
