It was a learning experience that prompted change. Pugh altered his offseason routine, planned to rework his physique to increase his body weight (in the 305-310 range) while lowering his body fat (near 15 percent). He moved out after living with his high school friends in North Jersey since he was drafted. This is all part of the evolution, from young man in the big city to seasoned veteran on and off the field. "You've got to get things in your life in order. I look at things as a highway and you don't want there to be roadblocks or anything going on," Pugh said. "So with your friends, you want to make sure you have everything in order, you're spending enough time with football and not going out or whatever. "You want to make sure your money is in order; your finances someone is taking care of it or watching it so you know you feel secure with that because during the season you don't have time to spend on it; your body, making sure I have my diet, my chef, taking care of it. I had the acupuncture, the massage, making sure you have all these things in order allows you to be free of distraction and it allows you to focus on football." |
Flowers being forced into action at LT....Pugh, going to a new position....Richburg to center....Schwartz/Jerry to guard....Newhouse to RT....
Not one guy was playing those positions last year(OK, Schwartz did for one game)....
How these guys play as a unit, not as individuals, is what counts.....last year we had defenses causing all kinds of problems, coming up the middle.....this year teams will stunt and probe the Giant line for weaknesses, and exploit them until they are corrected....
We will hear all kinds of stories about these individual players.....but until they actually get out there and play, against players not on their own team, we have no idea of what we have.....with Eli, OBj, Vereen and company, the offense has a better chance of performing than the defense....but if this OL does not come together quickly, it could be a long season....we are not inserting one or two guys into this line....basically we have changed the ENTIRE line....Flaherty has to work a miracle somehow.....We couldn't run last year, will we be able to this year? Can we keep Eli upright on 3rd down? Preseason can't come soon enough, to answer these questions....
better late than never. if he isnt blowing smoke i think we can expect a better player this year
It is a real indictment of Pugh that the staff wants to start Flowers at left tackle (a rookie, and arguably not his best position) and a free-agent signed to be a backup at right tackle. It seems to say that they don't think Pugh is a tackle at all. That's a disappointment for a first-round pick, and it means they are going to have to go back into the draft to get yet another tackle unless Newhouse really surprises.
Pugh is supposed to be athletic and should make a nice pulling guard. It will be interesting to see how he holds up inside as a pass-blocker. A first round pick at tackle playing at guard ought to be able to dominate. If he does we might have a great left side of the OL.
