NFT: Knicks Chat! RoLo and Williams are Knick

DanMetroMan : 7/4/2015 9:37 am
The Knicks have reportedly come to an agreement with Derrick Williams on a two-year, $10 million deal.
The Knicks are grasping at straws hoping that Williams can contribute meaningfully at the NBA level. Outside of dunks and the occasional 3-pointer, Williams struggles across the board at every other aspect of the game. Even if he was granted significant minutes in New York, he should not be on the radar in standard leagues.

Knicks finally have a plan

4 years
TommyWiseau : 7/4/2015 7:36 pm : link
At 4 mil per? May be my favorite acquisition of this FA period. Phil doing work. We still have that 2.8 mil to use right?
Great trade
Deej : 7/4/2015 7:37 pm : link
Seriously, cash and a swap of #2s? Wow.

2.8 million exception
Do we have some board crashers and a better defense

We could make some noise. This should be a fun season with no expectations.

So high on Quinn
Deej : 7/4/2015 7:51 pm : link
I really think that in 3 years people are just going to be scratching their heads about how we got him for $4 million. I think he's going to be hugely productive.
I think draft night was a turning point for us.
bceagle05 : 7/4/2015 7:55 pm : link
Better days are ahead.
he is probably the Knicks starting pf
nygiants16 : 7/4/2015 7:58 pm : link
The question do Knicks use the exception for a back up 5 or try to find another shooter...

Calderon/grant
Afflalo/Galloway/ledo
Melo/early/thanasis
O'Quinn/williams
Lopez/porzingis
...
bceagle05 : 7/4/2015 8:04 pm : link
I think either
giantsfan44ab : 7/4/2015 8:04 pm : link
The Knicks don't start O'Quinn or sit RoLo or O'Quinn separately so one of them is always on the floor. Hopefully bring back Aldrich to get some more depth and a few minutes a game.
I hope we re-sign Aldrich and Shved
Anakim : 7/4/2015 8:05 pm : link
.
Can we still use the trade exceptions
Phil in LA : 7/4/2015 8:06 pm : link
or are they unusable because we're back up to the cap?
Between oquinn
Jon in NYC : 7/4/2015 8:06 pm : link
zinger, Williams and Melo there are plenty of minutes to be had at the 4. We need one more wing and then call it a day. Afflalo is going to need to put up big scoring numbers.

Same here. Phil said he didn't want to change the WHOLE team. Shved and Aldrich know the system and are useful parts.
I don't know about you, but I'd rather have O'Quinn and RoLo at 18 M
Anakim : 7/4/2015 8:24 pm : link
than Monroe at 16 M. For a team whose biggest achilles heel was defense, we just got two great defenders as opposed to a guy who was just offense.

I also am pumped about Derrick Williams. It's hard not to get excited when you read that scouting report...and the guy is still 24. He could still realize his potential.

Bring on the Summer League!
Pretty pumped
Big Rick in FL : 7/4/2015 8:25 pm : link
About free agency & the draft. Finally it seems this team is being built the right way. Hopefully somehow Phil can lure an All-Star or a guy with All-Star potential in next year. If Grant & Porzingis do enough to justify their draft position & we get one more star player I think we can make a nice playoff run in 2016. Melo & one more star, plus the two young draft picks & a decent amount of depth. I could see us finishing in the top 4 in the East.
If Porzingis is the goods...
bceagle05 : 7/4/2015 8:30 pm : link
Look out.
shved
GMEN46 : 7/4/2015 8:32 pm : link
I really them to resign shved. I really like his game a lot. He is very crafty, reminds me of a poor mans Manu ginolbli. Obvious needs to add some muscle, but showed a lot of skill and high Bball IQ.

Only thing missing is our first rounder (and our second rounder). Can't believe we gave it up for Andrea Bargnani. The NBA should force the Raptors to return the pick for sheer stupidity alone. God, if we lose a lottery pick for Bargnani, I will legit. throw up.

Yeah that really does suck. I don't think it's going to be that high this year anyway. I think we finish somewhere between the 6-8 seed. So we could probably buy a pick around that area or give up a Hardaway Jr type player for a top 20 pick hahahaha what a trade.

For bringing Shved and Aldrich back. We may be a work in progress but it sure is going to be a fun team to watch develop
This projected lineup doesn't wotk
Torrag : 7/4/2015 9:00 pm : link
O'Quinn/williams
Lopez/porzingis

You can't list Porz to get mins at the 5 yet. It isn't going to happen for a while. As in years.
Phil has done solid work
Torrag : 7/4/2015 9:06 pm : link
We have a team built intelligently for a change. Keep making smart moves and this can possibly get turned around a little faster than anticipated. It's still going to take a couple seasons and KP has to deliver down the line or we'll be a pretender rather than a contender.

For the first time in ages I am looking toward the future with optimism. I never believed in Woodson or the makeup of those rosters.
I really like the way the team is shaping up.
Lopes1984 : 7/4/2015 9:14 pm : link
I am expecting either Aldrich or Smith back. I highly doubt they want to use Porzingis at the 5 so we need some kind of depth behind Lopez. I think O'Quinn is 6-10 so maybe they think they can get away with using him there? Definitely seems we need one more big.
O'Quinn can play center
jeffro1 : 7/4/2015 9:46 pm : link
But he is foul prone, which is why we still need one more big.
The O'Quinn move is exactly the sort
Ash_3 : 7/4/2015 10:04 pm : link
of thing we should be doing. Phil's given out reasonable to good contracts to almost every one this offseason, and the one gamble is Williamd, who I'm still cautiously hopeful about. He needs to figure out that he's not going to be a go to scorer so he'll have to improve his three ball and become more efficient given less than heavy usage.
Cap space for 2016-17 is around $17m with 8 players.
Anakim : 7/4/2015 10:13 pm : link

I thought cap space available was more like 25? Even if 17 we have to assume afflalo and Derrick Williams are 99 percent opting out with higher cap so that would leave us 30 million under the cap
Yea with afflalo and williams
Italianju : 7/4/2015 11:35 pm : link
Opting out we should have close to 30. Plus we can stretch Calderon and at that point we would save like 5 mill. Of course with the opt outs you only have Melo, Lopez, Grant, KP, early, Oquinn. Cap hold on Galloway would be really small and you may have thanisis only taking up like a mill. Plus the guy we took in the second should be coming over. We are in pretty good shape right now for once.
really wish
TommyWiseau : 7/4/2015 11:47 pm : link
We had a way to pick up Koufos also who is still out there. Lopez, O'Quinn and Koufos would be one tough group.
nevermind on that

Labeyrie doesn't seem to be a 5, though. From the Post recently:

"During their stop in Utah on the Knicks’ recent trip, young 7-foot-2 Frenchman shotblocking center Rudy Gobert, who is emerging as a stud, spoke glowingly and excitedly about Labeyrie in a quick interview with The Post.

Gobert shares the same agent as Labeyrie, and the two played together on the French 20-and-under national team.

“He wants to play in the NBA and I know he can, I don’t know if it can be next season, but maybe, yeah,’’ Gobert said. “I haven’t talked to him about it yet. He’s more of a power forward than center, though. He’s not a center.

“He’s athletic and can drive and can shoot. I think he’d like to be in New York. I was happy for him.’’
Labeyrie will probably be in Westchester

Gotta question how good this guy is

5.3 points 3.6 boards 26% from 3 (supposedly the basis for much of his offense) 0.63 blocks in 16 minutes per

Why was he only getting 16 minutes per game as a 23 year old on some French team?
