@AndySlater: Big Jason Pierre-Paul story about to break in S. Fla. He severely injured hand in fireworks accident. @Coach_Eisy first to hint at situation
PFT has tweeted about it, although they are just citing the original tweet. But it's been up long enough where the Giants could have flat out denied it already if it weren't true
very stupid and tragic for him and his family. I think he would get $15M this year, but now what since he didn't sign his tender? Vet minimum from another team? Do the Giants pick-up $15M in cape space?
This is bad for him and sad for us fans if this is true.
Not that it's nowhere on Twitter, just in none of the sources that covers the NFL or Giants. Until PFT picked it up, you had to look long and hard to find it.
Hopefully, it's just some nonsense someone picked up and ran with, although PFT rolling with it makes me think there may be some truth here.
The Giants or any team should not have a there cap penalized the following years because a player is a moron. Work out a settlement with the player, but if it is clearly negligence on the player then the team should not be held responsible. Getting real tired of these players having so much power over the teams when they mess up.

This is how news breaks though all the time, all you have to do is type in "Jason Pierre Paul" in Twitter and search all the tweets. You see the most popular ones up top then a constant stream of the new ones coming in.
Report: Jason Pierre-Paul injured in fireworks accident
Posted by Darin Gantt on July 5, 2015, 4:38 PM EDT
For many of us, last night was a chance to blow off some steam, if not some fingers.
But Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul might have gotten a little too close to the action.
According to Andy Slater of WINZ in Miami, Pierre-Paul severely injured his hand in a fireworks accident last night.
A woman who said she was his neighbor tweeted out a photo of a truck load of fireworks, showing large boxes in a van.
Details at this point are few, but this could potentially have a huge impact on him and the Giants, as he hasnt signed his franchise tender worth $14.8 million, and theyd have a tremendous lack of pass rush without him if he missed an extended amount of time.

Jason Pierre Paul has been my neighbor for over a year and I'm currently lighting fireworks with him with his truck load of fireworks
Is there a single credible report out yet that doesn't
and the Giants pull his offer, could they possibly extend Eli and use the extra cap space this year to give him a huge base salary and therefore lower his cap number for future years?
No idea how that works

He posted an instagram video yesterday next to that uhaul truck. It was cringe worthy.
NFL superstar Jason Pierre-Paul has reportedly suffered serious damage to his hand in a 4th of July fireworks accident.
The New York Giants defensive end -- a 2-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champ -- was participating in a massive fireworks show South Florida with friends when things went wrong ... according to Andy Slater of WINZ.
We've made multiple attempts to reach JPP -- and even his parents -- so far, no luck.
Sources familiar with the situation tell us JPP suffered bad injuries to some of his fingers and his thumb.
Story developing ...

I don't know possesses these morons to do stupid shit, especially in a contract year. If it's serious, he just fucked the whole team and the fans over because he wanted to goof off on the fourth of July.

Team and fans? If true, this rocket scientist just cost himself millions...

Never mind the fans. He doesn't have an NFL contract right now strictly speaking.
but if he had signed his tender, and it turns out this was about JPP being incredibly stupid and foolish with fireworks, would his money still be guaranteed, or does the tender have a "void if stupid shit happens" clause?
I never heard of anything so idiotic let alone in a contract year. I'm embarrassed this man is associated with the Giants. That is my feeling right now. He cost himself and his family money over fireworks.

I'm embarrassed to be from the same generation as him. Our generation of athletes are absolutely LOLworthy.

Well, there was Plax.
Oh man but at least he signed his deal before he tucked a gun in his jogging pants to go to a club. Oh boy, I couldn't even type that without laughing. Just stupid.
The Giants will almost certainly pull his tender, which I guess makes him a free agent? Does another team snap him up in anticipation of when he's healed?

Or would he be unable to pass a physical at this point, meaning that no team would deign to offer him a deal?

Depends on the severity of the injuries. If he does have partially missing fingers, no one is signing him this year.
No sympathy for him at all? This makes me sick it really sucks. He always seemed like a dim bulb so I actually feel really bad about this.
Who knows how it happened it could have been something that wasn't his fault.
I definitely have sympathy for him. I've never understood the idea of not feeling bad for people who fuck up their lives by being stupid. If anything it's even worse for him mentally than if some tragic, unavoidable accident hurt him.

Yea my bad man...someone probably threw a cherry bomb at him and it someone went towards a child and he dove 10 feet and saved the child's life while catching it in his hands resulting in the injury. On the way to the hospital JPP saw another severely injured person in the same ambulance and gave him 3 pints of his already low blood supply, he saved the other mans life also.
who may never see the tens of millions of dollars that could've transformed their lives because their dipshit dad/grandpa/uncle couldn't resist playing with explosives.
May have had his hand blown off... I'm not the morality police, douchebag, but the first thing I thought of wasn't "what a fucking asshole he is" it was "shit I hope he's ok."

I think it goes without saying that all of us hope he's OK.
The Giants so nailed not giving him a longterm contract.
Since I was 10 years old. There is a right way to handle them. Then there is a cavalier immature way to do it too. You don't blow your hand off the first way.
That said I hope he's alright for his own sake. The Giants will obviously get up to date on his status asap and decide where we go from here.
May have had his hand blown off... I'm not the morality police, douchebag, but the first thing I thought of wasn't "what a fucking asshole he is" it was "shit I hope he's ok."
It's a self inflicted wound caused by an astounding amount of stupidity. And that idiot decision to mess around with fireworks which caused him to hurt himself is going to impact a whole bunch of people in the organization along with the fans if he misses time or plays worse because of it. He's fine, he's going to survive. He's just a fucking idiot if this is true.
Another guy was killed on the fourth because a firework exploded after he tried to fire one off from his head. I don't think "Man, that sucks." I think "man, that's really fucking stupid." At some point, you lose sympathy for people when they make stupid decisions in life.
Funny because that's the first thing in my post. "I think he'll be OK" ....The situation is rather stupid, not life threatening but all joking aside, he'll get the aid he needs from the medical center... Ya gotta HAND it to him for his career with the Giants.
there'd be almost no "what a dumb asshole" sentiment, because Eli's got a rep for being smart. JPP does not have that rep. At best, JPP has a rep for being a bit of a goofball who doesn't take things as seriously as he should. Which is likely is what led him to what happened last night.
who may never see the tens of millions of dollars that could've transformed their lives because their dipshit dad/grandpa/uncle couldn't resist playing with explosives.
You feel bad for the non-existent grandchildren of a millionaire. Yep, I've heard everything now.
For some reason I don't think our medical staff is up to this

What's so crazy about that? This guy may have just pissed away close to $200 million. He let his whole family down - not to mention teammates. If this is a career-ended, it's one of the colossal fuck-ups in history.
I feel terrible for JPP. it is probably less of a risk than playing pick up basketball. So, I really don't want to hear it about his decision making. Obviously, many on here don't play with fireworks, nor do I, but tons of people do and most don't blow their hands off. I hope he gets better on a humanity level.
with his feet or something it becomes guaranteed and he'd have earned 33M in 6 years just from football - no marketing/endorsement, no playoff money, etc.
if someone makes 250k per year it would take them 120 years to earn that.
I'm not going to shed a tear for the lost wages of his entourage or future generations. I just hope he can play this year.

Agreed. Very foolish to play with fireworks, but people make mistakes. His entire life is likely crashing down on him right now. It says more about the person name-calling him than JPP himself, IMO.
because he had a real concern about safety and handled it foolishly. This is basically moronic. Did he forget the reason why he didn't participate in OTAs on the 4th of July or something.

Awful judgement on his part to say the least.

Jason Pierre-Paul expected to meet with doctors, they will have their say, but early indications are, hand injury is not career threatening.
things in their life and don't pay a price. OK to feel sympathy for a guy who isn't so lucky. Wish him the best right now. Plenty of time to chew over the consequences for the season later.
Some of you disgust me that I'm ashamed you're Giants fans and you root for the same team that I do. Can we at least find out the severity of his injury and the circumstances surrounding his injury before we rescind the fricking contract? The guy was a huge part of a Super Bowl championship, and maybe he hasn't lived up to lofty expectations in the past few years. But, at least, be classy about this before you mock the shit out of him and call him dumb. This thread would fit in real well on igglephans.com

Yeah, but we do love to say how Giants fans are a cut above and classier, don't we? Not in this thread.
It's sad when I know for a fact that family members of Giants read this board.
He's always been dumb. That's ok I know some dumb people and have some dumb friends. I'm just not surprised when they do dumb shit. Just like I'm not surprised JPP did something stupid. As the saying goes you can't teach stupid. He's still a good guy.

So your first instinct when one of your dumb friends does something stupid is, "I knew he was stupid."
I would think it would be, "oh shit, I hope he's ok."
So he exceeded my already low expectations for him.
In the long term this is good for the Giants. It Sabres them from potentially doing something very stupid.
The stupidity was clear the day he threw Prince in the tub. Might as well have started a countdown clock to stupidity then.
The tub thing again? Come on Terps.
You're gonna tell me you didn't think this guy was a complete fucking moron? At best an immature fool, at worst someone who would let a firework explode in his hand.
I hope the injury isn't bad, but he did the Giants a favor.
Yeah correcting grammar on a forum will getcha into Mensa

Humans are complex beings with the ability to feel multiple emotions at one time. I can simultaneously feel empathy for him and his family (knowing you may have messed up your family's future must weigh very heavily in ones mind) and at the same time feel he is incredibly negligent and dumb for handling fireworks when he has so much to lose.
It's one thing to think he did an idiotic thing-most, if not all, would agree-but another to say stuff like that when the man could possibly have lost fingers.
Ok, here's a substantive rebuttal. If you're JPP's sister, are you happy about what Giant fans have said on this thread?
If we're saying we're "classy" Giants fans, let's not act like Eagle fans. That's my point. One of our own is hurt, and half this thread, people are mocking his intelligence.
But don't worry, if JPP sacks Romo twice in September, he'll be our boy again. I sense a little hypocrisy.
So he exceeded my already low expectations for him.
In the long term this is good for the Giants. It Sabres them from potentially doing something very stupid.

You were the first guy I thought of when I saw the Twitter rumors.

Hated JPP and does this.
Quit with the voodoo?
Not voodoo. Common sense. Stupid people do stupid things. They don't stop being stupid because they wear a particular jersey, and they tend to get more stupid when they get money.

It's as easy as understanding why character, work ethic, and dedication are important when considering whether to invest tens of millions of dollars in them.
It's weird, there are a lot of guys that would want to let Eli walk, the guy that embodies all of those things, and yet they would have been the ones to re-sign Plaxico or JPP in spite of the way they carry themselves off the field (including practice and offseason workouts, etc...) without giving it a second thought.
Big difference between a friend doing something stupid...
and a high-exposure star player doing something stupid. Yes, if it was a friend, my first instinct--and the next 20--would be concern, even if he got hurt acting foolishly.
With a star athlete, my first instinct is to wonder how it happened--and if it was screwing around with fireworks, I would be pissed. Sorry, but this is part of the price one pays for the disproportionate compensation that comes with fame in the entertainment sector.
Yes, I hope he's OK, but if it turns out that he risked his career, and his value to his team, to fuck around with explosives, I really have difficulty feeling much sympathy. I still hope he's OK, of course.
Even if it isn't career threatening, btw, it seems very likely that he will lose lots of time in terms of conditioning and preparing to play football again, eventually.

Is he was injured in a fireworks accident. That, in itself, in not very intelligent considering his profession and contract situation. Other details are needed, but the core event it not the best situation to put one's self in.

Sure they do....it's called being human last I checked....were you there?
What are the odds that this occurred in a way that didn't involve getting foolishly close to explosives, while sitting out from football workouts because he wasn't under contract?
If nothing foolish occurred, I will come back here and apologize. The odds seem small.
Hope he's ok. And why wait to see what actually happened before declaring him an idiot? I mean, if he burned himself on an iron or stove, or heater he's an idiot that should be shown the door, right? If only the team consisted of guys with perfect character. I mean who could ever imagine having guys liKe Tyree, Toomer, Diehl, McKenzie, Bradshaw, Strahan on the team.

The Giants have succeeded with a number of poor characters, including the two mentioned. Stupid events of this magnitude can't be predicted, and every team has a few guys they worry about to some degree.. I've been wary of signing JPP long-term for the concerns you've cited, however.
All do) or ride a motorcycle? What about skiing or cliff diving or jet skiing in vacations? I would guarantee there are many more percentage based accidents in many of those than in playing with fireworks. All have risks, but because you don't have to do the fireworks and it is unnecessary, people substitute their moral judgments about it and equate his small risk as stupid. Many athletes take small risks every day (despite certain language written into contracts) but when it is something that most people can't understand why, we criticize them. If a surgeon goes bike riding, is he an idiot?
Anyway, even if it was foolish, he wasn't under contract to anybody at the time he did it and owed nobody anything.

Haha. I didn't say that Terps. But the ice tub thing is just locker room Bullshit with some young guys clowning around.
Again, one can feel sorry for him, yet think he did an idiotic thing. We've all done stupid things. Thankfully, most of us don't have to live with the repercussions.
Very skilled practitioners get killed all the time and they are not at fault. Many NFL players have rode them, even if they had language in their contract prohibiting it. Accidents happen.
when you have no idea what you are doing is not even in the same ballpark as playing basketball, jesus christ
Yeah and buying a "truckload" of them too. I hope he is ok and that his injuries are not career threatening. I hope he learns from this. I hope the Giants get a bit of a contract discount based upon his stupidity. He obviously screwed his future contracts with other teams now too.
Same goes for if it were you or me or my next door neighbor. Falling off a ladder while fixing the roof is an accident. Dropping a knife on the foot while you're cooking dinner is an accident. This is no accident.
what do they do with the $15 million they allocated to JPP?
That is interesting question. This year it would kill us, in the years coming ahead, not sure from a football perspective if signing him long term is a good decision for us. We are paying him pass rusher money and besides 2011 and the end of last year, he has never shown us to be an elite pass rusher
But if you really want stupid, the assholes in bone-dry California who lit fireworks, threw them in the woods & started a massive forest fire that is threatening people's homes & towns! When you do something so stupid that it affects innocent people's lives, that's STUPID!

Explosives? Semantic hyperbole much? Holy shit, the dude burned his hand on a firework. If all his limbs are in tact he's fine. This is orders of magnitude less stupid than driving drunk, and there was much less righteous indignation when Diehl and McKenzie pulled those gems.

First of all, Hope he's ok and not career threatening. But, even if all limbs are in tact, wouldn't you think nerves of hand also involved? Let's see what final outcome of this.
DIehl was a moron for getting a DUI also, however he has proven himself smart and a good Giant at other times. I think you are the one with the problem. SHockey also was "unsophisticated". SHockey was a fucking a morn and a piece of shit. They always come back to bite you.
If he's expected to make a full recovery for this season...
Tom Brady goes cliff diving. Also not 'unsophisticated'. Jay Williams destroyed his knee on a bike. Bobby Hurley. Point is, young kids make dumb decisions. Some are lucky, and some are unlucky.
RE: If he's expected to make a full recovery for this season...
and he is a good, but definitely not a great player. I would rather see Owa and Damontre Moore anyway. Fuck him. I also hope we can withdraw that tender if he is hurt badly.
(As crazy as it sounded earlier) where he was doing something noble. Odds are it wasn't. Posting pictures of fireworks tells me this was something stupid. Yes, bad things can happen when playing basketball but you could argue that it is helping players stay in shape. At some point you can't just live in a bubble until the following football season. As another poster pointed out, there is a correct and safe way to handle fireworks and there is the opposite. When I was younger I would light off fireworks but I would always do it in a proper manner and I am talking when I was a child. When I look back on it now I should have never been allowed to light them off. I'm not talking about sparklers. I'm talking heavy duty stuff. Also, you know that at these fourth of July parties that there is also alcohol involved. I'm not saying JPP was drinking but odds are people were which makes the whole situation very dangerous. Everybody wants to light them off and with the amount of fireworks that were posted I'm assuming (I know what happens when you assume) this was not done in an orderly and safe way.
It doesn't matter what you do, there are risks and rewards to anything. You could get in a car accident driving to work like Weatherford. But what some people are missing is that there are necessary evils and there are just unnecessary ones. This was 100% an unnecessary evil. There was no benefit from it other than personal satisfaction. People bring up motorcycles and I out them in the same category as this. This is not to criticize anybody who rides a motorcycle but I would only get on one with no traffic around. I have seen a lot of poor driving from people with motorcycles but even if you are a good driver on a bike it just takes one false move by someone else to end your life. A simple fender bender in a car and everybody is alright. If that same thing happens on a bike then that driver could be dead. Just the other day I am driving home and I see the highway in the other direction closed. I keep driving and I see a bike. I driver further and I see a cop with a board up. I keep driving and I get an angle where I saw the driver dead on the side of the road while the cop was putting markers down for the evidence. It was heart wrenching.
Back to my earlier point, I feel bad for people when things happen to them out of their control. I have a very hard time feeling bad for people that bring bad things upon themselves. I feel bad for a person that got laid off due to downsizing. I don't feel bad for a person that got laid off because they consistently show up late to work. This situation so far sounds like this is JPP making bad decision. Yes, we are all human and make mistakes but life is not fair and some mistakes are worse than others. Yes, I am glad to hear that he is alright. As a human I never like to see bad things happen to other people or animals. But as a Giants fan and season ticket holder I wouldn't be upset if we did pull the FT offer and used our money elsewhere. It also helps that I am a big fan of Moore and Odi. I also really liked what I saw from Ayers last year. I also believe Selvie can be a nice role player for us as well. Plus, I am sure there will be situations where Kennard may have his hand in the turf too. While ideally we would have JPP return to form when he was at his peak to make our team stronger I see way more negatives with him overall and to commit a ton of money to him long term is riskier than JPP dealing with fireworks.
CALAIS, Maine A local man was killed instantly Saturday when he set off a fireworks mortar tube on his head, despite efforts his friends made to stop him, state police said Sunday.
Even if you're careful. Even when you're sober.
These things are illegal in most states and therefor the ones ordinary people buy are made in foreign countries, like China and Mexico.
Do you trust the Chinese and Mexicans to carry out good quality control for export fireworks? I wouldn't.
You never know when you are going to light a fuse that is too short. Result, an explosion in your hand, the loss of fingers, the loss of an eye or two.
Even the professionals hired by cities to put on displays have serious accidents.
Leave them alone.
That said, the smart move is probably to pull the offer based on the logic that he's not likely to play at a $14.8MM level this year. That's the cruel facts.
And that's partially why I feel so terrible for JPP.
As a total aside is the fact that this pretty much crushes any chance of our defense developing into any kind of elite unit this year.

I disagree with that last part. The important thing about Spags D is that everybody has a job to do and if they do then good things happen. He will find the weaknesses in an offense and try to exploit them. That is why I made the comment that Beason is a very important part to this D. It isn't for his physical ability but rather his mental capacity as well as his work ethic. He needs to be an extension of Spags. They players trust him. He has communicated with Antonio Pierce. JPP would be a nice piece to have but I don't think our success rides with him.

Of course those are percentages of all fireworks injuries not the percentages of JPP specific injuries which of course we don't even know the extent of yet.
I don't think anyone would think differently if it were someone else
Granted - you can get hurt doing just about anything, and these guys do have lives. But, if Tom Brady's hang glider were to fold up and him plummet to his death (knock wood), I'm pretty sure the consensus would still be 'rich guy dying doing something he shouldn't have been doing'.
No different with JPP. We've probably all lit some fireworks at some point in our lives, but none of us have ever had that much at stake if something went wrong. If my hands were largely required for my multi-million dollar living, I'm pretty sure there'd be a lot more activities that I wouldn't go anywhere near. Hard to defend him when he's standing next to a rental van full of explosives.
The only one I know of had Strahan, Osi and Tuck in their primes, Kiwi (a still good Kiwi), Cofield, Robbins, etc.
that's not pedestrian guys (like the Giants have other than JPP and Hankins) doing their jobs. That's a stacked D - especially a stacked D-line.
seriously, not being a dick, but what other Spags D was good with just guys doing their jobs?
He had Strahan for one year. His defense was better without him. Why do you think that is? Yes, he had talent along the DL but Osi was also basically ran out of town because of his run defense. He also had average at best talent everywhere else. It isn't like we were playing video games. Guys like Antonio Pierce, McQuarters, Webster, Mitchell, our undrafted safeties, etc. had to do their jobs as well.
I really don't want to turn this into a Spags discussion. My point is simple, a D is more than one player. No one player ever made a defense, not even LT. JPP hasn't given us much when it mattered over the last couple of years. If it is all about JPP then by your logic we are going to suck defensively next year because we have sucked defensively for the past several years with JPP.
I do think the secondary will be good if DRC and Prince stay healthy, no clue what to expect at S with the rookie Collins and either Taylor Behre or other.
I think LB can better is Beason stays healthy (LOL) along side Kennard, and I think the DL can be a disaster with whoever is alongside JPP and Hankins.
The D has been bad and without JPP I think it will be worse.
Even Spags can't fix personnel IMO.
Go back and watch XLII (I know you know it as well as I do) and tell me how bad Osi was run out of town, it was much later. he had 5 more seasons after that SB and 4 more after Spags left. Tuck was elite. and one year of Strahan, but he was in tip top HOF shape.
not to mention Cofield and Robbins inside.
that line was among the best in Giants history IMO.
My only point is I think people expect too much from Spags.
I don't know the stats off the top of my head, but I read his defense along the way since leaving the Giants were pretty bad.

You are totally taking what I am saying and twisting it. I loved Osi. He played the run very well under Spags. Why? Did he all of a sudden forget how to play it under Sheridan? You are taking this too far. My simple comment was that JPP is not the deciding factor on whether our D is good or sucks. If that was the case then we should just pack it in right now.
I don't give a shit about Spags' stint in STL as a HC nor his stint in NO after Payton and Williams and players were suspended. And, like I said, just having a great DL doesn't mean you will be good. Others have to make plays. This isn't a video game where the DL wins every play. Especially in today's NFL, offenses minimize the DL with their quick game. You have to be sound across the board, be on the same page, line up right, know your responsibility, listen to the adjustments, etc.
I don't know how else to explain this. I never said we will dominate on defense. I never said Spags is the son of Christ. All I said was that our defense will not crumble if we don't have JPP. If those are high expectations then I am guilty as charged.
to this thread, but my point was in response to this comment you made.
Quote:
The important thing about Spags D is that everybody has a job to do and if they do then good things happen
to the best of my knowledge this has happened once in Spags career, the 2007 Giants, 2008 started this way, but once injuries hit the guys replacing the injured guys didn't do their jobs.
anyway, that comment in theory is probably true about all DC's - not a big deal.
This kid is an idiot. I feel bad for him. I wouldn't want anyone injured like this. But these injuries are 100% avoidable and he has SO much riding on this season in terms of getting paid, to put himself in position like this is just dumbfounding. Never mind his commitment to his teammates or the NYG.
Just an incredibly stupid and sad situation. If you were to tell me this happened to a Giants player and asked me to guess who, I would have guessed JPP.
At least with your thread I was able to read the extent of the injuries without trying to sift through a lot of other debates on the subject.
It sounds like he is very fortunate not to have lost any fingers. I hope he regains full use of his hand and fingers. Playing football pales in importance compared to that.
"Early (and apparently erroneous) reports stated he lost several fingers in the accident, reports that were overblown according to a Giants source. JPP might be fortunate the injuries he suffered were not more severe. "
It seems he burned his palm and fingertips.
I used to fool with fireworks all the time, as a kid ...
I know it's not as serious as plax and gun laws, but any possibility he faces any legal ramifications or nfl take any action? I admit I don't know first thing about the laws in Florida but imagine just a fine if anything?

trying to get another update but Joe said no missing fingers
flesh and finger tips affected, not career threatening
RE: I'm not sure why people feel sorry for this assclown
He's proved time and time again that he's a fucking moron.
You lose all ability to have any compassion for someone that is injured if they are careless in the process?
Yes, you can have compassion on a human level. However, he is getting paid a lot of money not only to perform on the field but to make sure he CAN perform on the field. By accepting his pay check, he is making a commitment to the Giants, the rest of the players, coaches and the fans. If not for the entire group I just mentioned, there wouldn't be millions of dollars there for him.
This is just another example of someone being stupid. Reminds me of that point guard from Georgetown or Duke years ago. He got drafted and before he could play in his first game he had a motorcycle accident and ended his career. Probably never rode a motorcycle before and now that he had the money, he went out to buy a crotch rocket.
This is why some teams put restrictions on what some of the athletes are allowed to do off of the field.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 57s58 seconds ago
Jason Pierre-Paul expected to meet with doctors, they will have their say, but early indications are, hand injury is not career threatening.
Good to hear.
I can sympathize with this situation with our own fellow pass rusher.
I wish he blew his arm off acting like a total fool. He's a first class dickhead, and Johnny Boy should be smart enough to never offer him a large, multi-year deal.

This fuck is grown man acting like a 15 year old. I'm sick of his absurd Instagram photos, his gold chains, and now his fingerless hands. What a dick.
Not sure what gold chains has to do with anything.
JPP is 26 year old who plays a game for a living and if I were to guess likely a little on the immature side maybe as a result. Was it stupid to play with fireworks? Absolutely; but I still don't understand why that means you would lose the ability of having any compassion for his being injured? You act like he was injured while attacking an old lady or something.
I wish he blew his arm off acting like a total fool. He's a first class dickhead, and Johnny Boy should be smart enough to never offer him a large, multi-year deal.
Since I was 10 years old. There is a right way to handle them. Then there is a cavalier immature way to do it too. You don't blow your hand off the first way.
That said I hope he's alright for his own sake. The Giants will obviously get up to date on his status asap and decide where we go from here.
Eh, as someone who has seen a licensed pyrotechnichian have his face blown off, spare me the details of how expert you are.
looks like it would be something posted in an "Onion" article, or something of the like. Unbelievable that he literally had a van full of fireworks ready to go last night. Actually, this whole story reads like something out of the Onion. Except if it was The Onion, his whole hand would have blew off. He's lucky it wasn't that bad. But the picture of the van is unbelievable to me. It just doesn't look like something that can be real. But this is the Giants injury picture we are talking about, so anything is possible. Including guys ordering VAN fulls of fireworks to have fun with. Unbelievable.
and needs to mature. He's still a kid! Extremely athletic, but no brains...the attached link indicates that it is not career threatening and that he burned some skin off his palms and finger tips, but no fingers missing. I guess they are also still waiting on the complete medical report, as well. Link - ( New Window )
We have someone wishing he blow his entire arm off?
Just like Plax was and even worse moron. Just like Roethlisberger gets in an accident riding a motorcycle without a helmet. Hell, even Tom Brady jumped off a cliff into a lake on his last holiday. Really stupid if he lands wrong and gets paralyzed. Bet Belichick loved seeing that footage.
Enough bad injuries happen in the game, and tragic injuries happen in life. But that's not enough for these idiots. They gotta find more. You know what, guys? You have PLENTY of time to do these fucking stupid things and screw up your lives AFTER your playing days are over. That way you don't kill your career, lose millions of dollars, AND hurt your teams.

JPP has burns on palm, 3 fingers. 1 finger could have nerve damage. Didn't lose any fingers, team thinks he'll be OK, per @DanGrazianoESPN.
Nerve issue in a palm or finger tip could easily mean loss of touch sensation which isn't likely to effect his ability to tackle someone. If he didn't wildly mess up his hand this won't change his game at all.
The Giants have always been wise when constructing contracts for risky guys and any long term deal with JPP was always going to protect them. This isn't going to change anything if he's ok.
Before this incident there were 3 groups of fans
1) offering him the tag was a mistake, he had 1 amazing year, hasn't stayed healthy and isn't worth 15 mm
2) 15 mm for 1 yr is a smart move. Jpp doesn't deserve a long term deal. He played well down the stretch. He'll be motivated and produce.
3) sign him long term. He's a good not great player. He is a difference maker and we need him.
I was in group 2). My mind has changed. I'm now in group 1) regardless of if he can play.
the salary cap doesn't make an exception for your star DE blowing up fireworks in his hand.
not to be insensitive or racist (though I in no way see how this can be construed as racist but on this site everything is racist), depending on the severity the Giants need to consider rescinding the FT.
maybe work out a one-year deal.
How would the greatest fans on the planet react to potentially losing their best player on defense?
A prayer/get well thread (to a person who will never see it)? I think it's pretty implied that all Giants fans are hoping for the best possible outcome for JPP, but at the same time are wondering the football impact and I don't think that makes anyone a bad fan.
I didn't see anything racist, but if there were racist comments that's disgusting and not representative of a fan base.

Very little chance he gets a long term deal now, unless he comes very, very cheap.
RE: A thread about a guy nearly blowing his hand off
someone as 'unsophisticated', and then a comment about gold chains, I guess the thinly veiled racism just doesn't exist on this board.
I'm not saying racism doesn't exist and I'm not saying it doesn't exists on BBI, but the poster explained afterwards he considered Shockey unsophisticated as well. I'd never use that term to describe an athlete but how is that racist?
unveiled, thinly veiled or any veil.
seems like sometimes people are over sensitive and just jump to the "that's racist" determination.
anyway, I'm done with this. everything comes down to race on here.
If weston Richburg spent the offseason away from the team while instagramming pictures of fireworks vans and gold chains he would be an ass hole too. God damn it nobody is racist we are all just pissed as usual that JPP is an immature lazy and sometimes fat player on the team we all root for. Go to the archives and read what everyone else said about Shockey all the time and get off your high horses with your white knight racism shit.
until the unfortunate and stupid comment about gold chains. I don't know how that isn't to be taken as a racist remark. Did he have to say 'fried chicken' too for it to qualify?
So your point is if Pierre Paul plays poorly and he's hurt badly, the Giants won't pay him well?
Not at all. My point is JPP didn't help his case at all today if he's trying to get a longterm deal with the Giants. Ordering a van full of fireworks and nearly blowing your hand off is enough to scare off most teams, and that definitely includes a team like the Giants.
that comment also screams of an elitist douchebag at best. I have a suspicion that he threw in Shockey to cover his tracks. I find it quite peculiar that he has recently gone right after Flowers (and his dad), and has a hard on for piling on JPP.
Thank you I thought I was going crazy. It's like these dudes think they are this enlightened subset of the population by finding racial bias in everything that is said about a black person.

well you know him better than I do, I just don't like to jump to conclusions about people, especially in terms of racism. not much worse than being labeled a racist. especially if not true, it reminds me of the salem witch trials. someone randomly or with little evidence says "witch" and it's a death sentence.
So only black people wear gold chains? I don't know how old you guys are or what quiet suburb you live in but I'd say that >80% of the population of NYC males between the ages of 20-30 wear a gold chain. Black, White, Hispanic, etc.
Again . Get off your high horses and stop being the morality police.
If JPP never put on a chain in his life he is still be an asshole.
A year from now if JPP replicates his productivity from last year he'll be paid top 5 at his position and the Giants will be a big a player for his services. Burning his hand on a firework isn't going to stop the NFL from paying a good player.
The MAN is 26 years old. We're not talking about some bad decision of rushing into marriage, investing in a ponzi scheme or buying a house you can't afford. We are talking lighting off fireworks carelessly to the point of severely damaging your hand. What's next advising him not to play in the street??? Come on.
As someone pointed out the last time I heard about this was Coleman who was throwing firecrackers at the Mets beat writers in LA that injured that little girl. I think Coleman handlers tried that whole "youthful" angle but no one was buying it.
seems like sometimes people are over sensitive and just jump to the "that's racist" determination.
anyway, I'm done with this. everything comes down to race on here.
PJ...Exactly. You can't say anything here without someone twisting it into racism. Then again, who gives a shit what a few jackasses on a Giants message board think?
But if the Giants don't go after him as hard or ultimately don't land him, that'd be cool with me. Too risky. This proves the doubts are legitimate. Don't trust him.
A year from now if JPP replicates his productivity from last year he'll be paid top 5 at his position and the Giants will be a big a player for his services. Burning his hand on a firework isn't going to stop the NFL from paying a good player.
I'd prefer those resources to go to a player or players who have proved to have brains in there heads when making everyday decisions ... This isn't hard to figure out ... The NYG's will not make poor investment decisions ... Right now this guy is a defaulted credit ... I bet he wishes now that he had signed and agreed to whatever terms were initially offered ... All you can see is a declined value at this point ... And from a standpoint of trust, you have to question the thought process ...
They could structure any possible extensions for Prince and Eli to eat the hit just fine in 2016.
I'm not one to normally care about guys being douchebags, morons, etc, but the Giants (or any team) would be just as dumb as he is to invest in a major longterm deal for him.
As I mentioned Big Ben riding motorcycle without helmet. STUPID. Brady cliff diving. STUPID. And of all of them, Brady is certainly old enough to know better. Both things probably more stupid than playing with fireworks when you're a million dollar athlete. But not by much.
Of course I hope JPP is OK, and his playing career resumes unaffected, and I'm not among those yelling for the Giants to get rid of him.
Just always amazes me how these guys who have the talent to have these lucrative careers seem to invent new stupid ways to jeopardize them.
This is the same Giants team that paid Plaxico Burress
while knowing behind the scenes what kind of headcase he was for the team, and concealing it for years. We only found out after he was long gone what kind of problem he was.
I don't think we need to equate this to a drug problem, or a domestic disturbance police call. He's never been arrested, he's never failed a substance test, he's never been a story in the newspapers before now and from what we've been told he's a good teammate and locker room presence.

No one is saying he is a bad person. But it's not a stretch to see why the Giants were hesitant to give him a longterm deal in the offseason, and an incident like this likely just reaffirms their stance. It will be interesting to see what happens next offseason. But with a conservative franchise like the Giants, I wouldn't be shocked at all if they let someone else sign him, especially if someone else is offering him a bigger contract.
Based on what some in the know have said, most of the reason the
team hasn't shown JPP the money this offseason is because of their concerns regarding his maturity, commitment, etc. I highly doubt this incident is going to ease their worries.
And, hey, maybe they actually learned something from giving Plaxico an extension when they didn't even have to touch his contract at the time.
By all accounts,JPP is a good guy. He may or may not be the hardest working or one who makes the best decisions but he hasn't been suspended, arrested, etc. So he is a big kid and does immature stuff. I hope this teaches JPP a hard lesson and he straightens himself out and becomes the best football player he can be for the NY Giants. This is not even close to carrying a concealed weapon and shooting yourself.
my point is more that those types of problems are what the team
looks to avoid. Childish mischief is correctable. I think they make a distinction between 'bad guy' and 'knucklehead'. If they wanted to pay him, this probably wouldn't change their mind.
Just my opinion, but they probably have a bigger problem with the fact that he and his agent are angling for a blockbuster contract more than the fear that he's going to get sent to jail or whatnot.

Tossing 1st rd picks that are 100lbs smaller into cold tubs sounds like a great teammate. Bet he wished he had some ice now !
I don't know how I can sit down at table with him and his agent and take him seriously while discussing a lucrative long term contract. Without looking at him and then at his hand and then back at him.

The ship has sailed for his big pay day as each day moving fwrd from this incident only lessens the value of his worth. He would of been smart to agree to terms that were probably already offered and rejected by his camp.

No one said he might go to jail in the future. It's just about maybe not trusting someone who hasn't completely grown up yet, which last night proved in spades. If anything, last night hurt the chances of the Giants changing their mind and making a long term commitment on the guy.

I tend to agree with Marty here. Being a dumb ass with fireworks is pretty common. When I was young, I took stupid chances too.

Well that's not true. He could have a great season, in which case he'd get paid what he wants from someone.

You are probably right, but I hope it is not us and if history proves correct the NYG's will not get into a bidding war over an umbecile.
If the guy is stupid now is $15 million a year going to cure that?
Should have moved him two years ago. This would have been someone else's embarrassment.
Still waiting for extending Burress and having Strahan back for that final year to bury the team, eh?
Extending Burress when they didn't have to and banking on him in 2008 actually did end up blowing up in their face (or in his sweatpants), so I'm not sure what Terps would be waiting for there.
Breh dogged it pretty much throughout that season, save opening night, and then shot himself off the field down the stretch, when the team wasn't in position to find a suitable replacement for him/his role.
Is fine and cleared by the Giants.. how fast do you think he runs in and signs his franchise tender?
I was going to ask does he even need to inform the Giants of his injury updates. I thought he took his physical just a few weeks ago when he was at the facility. The only thing left was for him to sign the tender.
And then the Giants summarily cut him, making great work of a well-crafted team friendly contract, that had little to no long term cap impact. Which then didn't impact their medium term success, both on the field or financially.
The point is it's intellectually lazy to say "trade all the dumb guys" when the market place is full of early 20s, entitled athletes. It's a calculated risk market, where you leverage your investments as much as possible.
The idea that dumping JPP two years ago is a sound football or financial premise is about the most foolish football comment I've seen posted in some time.
I think there's a 50-50 chance the Giants rescind the tender
REGARDLESS of how the injuries shake out. I'm not going to say that "he's hurting the team" B.S. However, there's clearly a lack of intelligence and maturity that's astounding when you consider what he personally has on the line. He honestly could've ruined the lives of his family and future children with this stunt.
I'm perfectly fine with never seeing JPP in a Giants uniform again and that's coming from someone who wouldn't have suspended Plax after his shooting.
He burned his hand on a freakin fire work. Now are fireworks kind of stupid? Yes. Is it safe to say lots of other NFL players partook in the stupid tradition of lighting things on fire to see sparks and colors? Yup.
I mean we're trying to play future judgement tarot cards with a workforce that runs into each other for a living.
He made a judgement mistake, it sounds like he's ok, and I bet the dude keeps it to the fairgrounds next 4th.
Unless he's hurt to the point his performance is effected, management changing anything would be the truly stupid step.
I don't know how I can sit down at table with him and his agent and take him seriously while discussing a lucrative long term contract. Without looking at him and then at his hand and then back at him.
He has no leverage whatsoever in negotiations with the Giants after this. None. Wouldn't be surprised if the Giants let him walk after the season.
Calling a guy unsophisticated bothers you? Frankly that's sugarcoating it. If you follow the team and watch interviews it's quite obvious JPP is dumb. Doesn't mean he is a bad guy or I wouldn't have a beer with him. Doesn't mean I don't like him or don't appreciate what he can do on a football field for my team. It's just the truth. Breaking news on planet Earth some people are smarter than others. In case you didn't notice.
Deal with it and stop the whining and finger pointing.
How race got brought into this discussion. I think David needs to lay off the "racist" labeling. I believe this isn't the first time he has tossed this term out there
when someone mentioned having a problem seeing pictures of JPP's gold chains.
JPP's intelligence occasionally gets questioned because of his lack of command of the English language. But when you then go through your laundry list of problems you have with him and it contains "gold chains" many will question why your brain went there.
Oh, and you can always find capone on the thread to jump on the side of the potentially racist/ignorant comment. THAT'S far more telling to me of someone who either thinks any comment is justified, or doesn't want his own thought process questioned ever.
You see patterns in people around here and some are certainly creating unfavorable patterns.
an entire U-Haul van full of fireworks, which is what was reported as being outside his home, qualifies as "explosives."
It also qualifies as remarkably stupid in the hands of a non-professional.
Even if the injuries aren't "career-threatening," it seems likely that he will lose considerable workout time while healing, and thus won't be ready until some time during the season. The Giants should rescind their offer and offer him a smaller payout. No one is going to be in a rush to pay JPP an elite player's salary for this year.
And into the future, he is going to pay a substantial "stupid tax," even if he eventually heals fully, which we don't know yet that he will.
This thread would fit in real well on igglephans.com
himself who seems to have gotten away "lucky" The absolute personal anger at him from some is disgusting it's personal for some of you and that is pretty sick, feeling like you are more invested in him and The Giants than a normal human being would be. Upset? Sure, the hatred? It's a sign of mental instability.
I still can't believe I read a poster wishing he blew his arm off.
a vast majority of the 'let him walk' crowd on this thread will be calling for resigning him and excoriating Reese if he gets away.
a quick google indicates that in Florida, consumer fireworks are limited to the 'sparkler' category similar to what is now allowed in NY. Unless it malfunctions, these don't explode. I wonder if he had illegal fireworks, or if he was dumb enough to try holding one of the showering fountains?
You can buy the big fireworks here in my county, but they photocopy your ID and you sign a form saying you won't shoot them off in county limits.... Like selling beer to minors if they promise not to drink them.
In Kentucky most all large fireworks are legally sold
The Giants absolutely shouldn't get cute and drop his tender. This is a business built on asset risk management. This is a league where Greg Hardy is employable. The last thing the Giants should do is get cute with JPP and risk losing their best defensive player for no compensation. If they pull their exclusivity and create tension with his camp, there will be a team willing to take the risk. The Patriots would be on the line with him in an instant.
You handle the risk with every player, and the more risky guys you hedge the best you can. The Giants have done well with this under JR. With a player with variable productivity and health like JPP, they will construct any offer to protect themselves. If he doesn't bite, they'll let him walk. They've shipped of truly bad fits like Shockey, and they've constructed contracts to get out of with players like Burress and Bradshaw who showed character and behavior concerns.
But if they drop the tender and bate another team to steal JPP the stupid tax is on them.
I hope for a speedy recovery, and that the injuries are not serious, he is a father of a young child ... but as a player, he is nothing special, he had one breakout season off the backs of 92 and 72 ... since his been an average player who disappears when needed and certainly is not the lightning rod we push him to be ...
having said that, I am sure he will not be ready for the opener, wont be able to lift, and was not intending on attending camp to begin with ... the funny thing to see will be whether he changes his stance and now shows up at camp in order to look like a good employee ...
This guy is a fool and cares about nothing but a big pay day. There were concerns in the front office already about offering him a multi-year deal, with some believing he would be dogging it by the 2nd year, if not earlier.
Glad to hear the recent reports aren't as bad as it originally looked
out of Miami stating the actual injury is worse than being reported, so you don't know what to believe at this point ... either way, he wont be ready for the start of the season ...
I tend to agree with Marty here. Being a dumb ass with fireworks is pretty common. When I was young, I took stupid chances too.
JPP is 26 years old. He's not that young anymore. Time to grow up. He may not be a criminal but he is an immature idiot - less like Plaxico and more like Jeremy Shockey.

Honestly, there's a history of this behavior among fans. "If you don't make my team win on sundays, I hate you."

I don't think anyone here has said they hate JPP.
Also, I believe fan behavior is the opposite of what you say. If a guy is a moron or a jerk, fans are more likely to look past it if the guy is on their team.

I don't recall Shockey doing anything off the field that prevented him from being on it ... why is his name always mentioned ? the guy was a fire ball on field, do you take issue with that ? seems like we could use a player or 2 on both sides of the ball with the desire of Shockey ... team is full of pussy's ...
If this were a viral video of some random asshole with fireworks blowing up in his hand every poster here would be making jokes about it. It's amazing how wearing the right jersey can get you the benefit off the doubt in the eyes of some.
he certainly will not be available for a 16 game ...
season, so how do you justify $15mill. for a portion of games ? is there a way to pro-rate his earnings for 2015 ? rather the resources go elsewhere, players who have proven the desire to get better and follow a straight path ie. Eli, Prince etc. ...
I wonder how many people on here will call him dumb? I know, I know, he knows how to play soccer better than JPP knows how to play with fireworks.
The only thing that is dumb is you bringing up an injury from playing a pickup game of soccer to a guy who may or may not have almost blown his hand off (but at the very least did enough damage to wind up in the hospital) with a firework.
This thread should contribute a lot to the "What have we learned this week" thread.
What I have learned is that having a negative view of someone sporting a plethora of gold chains is racist. Then again, it doesn't really take much to cross that threshold here. My best friend (English/French) used to sport a multitude of gold chains and we all would rag on him for his "Mr T starter set".
As for JPP, I hope he's ok and this doesn't affect his career, but the giants need to be cautious here.
Baseball is the king of ridiculous off-field injuries
I wonder how many people on here will call him dumb? I know, I know, he knows how to play soccer better than JPP knows how to play with fireworks.

And, of course, you know the injury rate in each, right? Why is one mans fun dumb, while another man's fun stupid. Both enterprises have significant injury risks.

See Big Blue Blogger's thread on this. The team is not on the hook for non football injuries with respect to guaranteed money
I would say that we are dealing with a good natured level headed young man. Let's give him a long term lucrative contract and let Eli Manning twist in the wind unsure of his tenure with the Giants.
I wonder how many people on here will call him dumb? I know, I know, he knows how to play soccer better than JPP knows how to play with fireworks.
Playing soccer is an attempt at staying in shape. If JPP hurt himself playing basketball or soccer, I'd have no issue and treat it the same as Beatty.
A sport that has almost as many injuries as the NFL? I am sure you could find ways to stay in shape without playing such a sport with so many injuries. My only point is not to prove JPP is right, but to show how dumb our line in the sand is regarding athletes stupidity. If you can relate to it, it is ok; if you can't, it is not. I have never went near a firework in my life, but I hear a lot of people like playing with them. While it seems foolish to me, what right do I have to say that is any worse than a pro athlete playing a game where there are significant injury risks?
Eli Manning twist in the wind unsure of his tenure with the Giants.
I'm not sure that's the case at all given that his agent said he wasn't worried whatsoever and the deal would get done when it's time to. Eli Manning isn't "twisting in the wind". He's got an 11 year working relationship with the franchise, and he's a beloved figure.
1. That chris r post was just phenomenal. I actually caught my jaw dropping after I read it. He fucks with everyone and everyone falls for it every time. Myself included.
2. Torrag gets upset that he got corrected while in an argument, meanwhile he pulled the same shit with me a few days ago when I made nitpicking into two words. Clown.
3. One obvious troll makes a clear racist comment, and all the high and mighty posters come on here to claim this thread racist. No, it's the one poster that's racist. The thread itself seems immature, but not racist.
4. That Headhunter response to that X-Ray was absolute fucking gold. I don't know why I found that as funny as I did.
5. B in ALBs Happy Gilmore picture also deserves more credit. Fucking hysterical.

The point is that Eli's status has become an issue when it shouldn't even be a blip on the radar screen for this guy. He and his agent shouldn't have to be asked to comment about it. This GM should go to a class on "priorities".

What is the benefit to playing with fireworks? I'm fine if a player prefers taking the marginal risk of playing basketball over running 5 miles to get his cardio in.

It's only become an issue for people who are tasked with selling newspapers. And this is just a guess, but the GM probably has to have a talk with John Mara before handing out, or not handing out, $100+ million dollar contracts. So, I'm sure John Mara is quite in the loop here.

True, there is no athletic benefit to it, but there is a benefit in having fun. I just think a lot of times we kill a player because we think it is stupid and forget that they don't. They all have lives and if soccer makes Rory happy, great. If fireworks makes JPP happy, that's great for him (so long as it is legal in the jurisdiction). what about riding a motorcycle? As I said, my main point is where do we draw the line? For you, it seems to me if they get athletic benefits, but I doubt that was why Rory was playing soccer. I would imagine he was playing primarily because he loves the game and the benefit was simply ancillary.
Playing soccer isn't inherently dangerous. Could you get hurt? Sure, but you could also get hurt falling down the stairs.
Fire crackers are inherently dangerous. We've all heard by now about the imbecile who lit a fire cracker on his head and died. There's pretty much no threat of death or limb loss in soccer.
you do need to take precaution (and that might be where the issue lies), but I'm the last person who's going to jump up on that moral high horse and say "you shouldn't be playing with fireworks" that's silly. I'm in my early 40's and they're as much fun now as they were when I was 13.
even for a superstar professional athlete.
if you don't like fireworks you won't get it, but IMO lighting off fireworks isn't the issue.
don't play with fireworks
RE: Comparing soccer and fire crackers is asinine.

I don't know the stats, but if I had to guess, there are more catastrophic firework injuries, but many more of the injuries that Rory suffered in soccer than fireworks, which would keep an athlete out of his sport for a significant time.

If you dont think Shockey was an immature asshole then I don't know what to tell you. He made plenty of headlines off the field, even with the Saints. I'm not calling JPP an asshole (maybe he is, I dont know) but he is really immature and this is a pretty good example of it.
JPP's foolishness is only due in part to playing with fireworks
Most of it is that he was actually stupid enough to allow one to blow up in his hand.
Look at the picture of the van full of fireworks. Watch the Instagram video. If you think that is the portrait of something other than a complete fool, then you see the world differently than I do.
And that's fine. The only thing that is important is how the Giants' front office sees this. If they choose to retain him and make him a cornerstone of the long term on field product, then I think it's fair to question not only their judgment, but their sanity as well.
RE: And then Tom Brady went cliff diving this year.
He also went hand gliding. We forget that these guys are people. I work with professionals, many who do thrill seeking sky diving, cliff diving, skiing, mountain climbing. Nobody calls them idiots. Would I ever do that, not a chance, I am afraid of my own shadow. I don't think they are dumb for enjoying or seeking things that give them thrills.

Shockey never did anything off the field that prevented him from participating on Sunday ... you can not compare JPP to Shockey ... If JPP had an ounce of what Shockey display'ed desire wise one could imagine what kind of player we would have ...
If Tom Brady would've broken his neck and died while cliff diving,
most of us would be calling him an asshole too. Here's the difference though... if something happened to Tom Brady, his kids and family would be fine. He wife makes more money than he does. His parents lived comfortably before he made it big.
Do you honestly think JPP's family is getting access to 15 million dollars ever again if he loses his ability to play football due to this foolishness? I saw a story on his family... they weren't broke, but no one there is ever getting close to 15 million again. To put your family and children's future at risk like that is insane.
I'm not trying to sound holier than thou. In high school, my best friend got a box of fireworks from his uncle and we lit them in the field behind a school. Here's the difference... we were kids AND no one was dependent on us as bread winners.
Did Brady cliff dive into kiddie pool?. Did he fly his glider into power lines?
I agree that Brady's behavior was risky. I'd call it riskier even than enjoying some fireworks. But what isn't being factored into that comparison is that Brady pulled those things off fine, while JPP couldn't even pull off the fireworks without being lucky to still have ten fingers at the end of it.
JPP is a fool. Brady is not. That is an enormously important distinction to make.
And his off the field crap did cost the team on the field production. He wasn't that committed to his craft which explains why his career or lack of it has progressed to this point. And Parcells absolutely called it.

If that is your criticism, that's absolutely fine. I don't think there's that much concern for him as a person so much as concern for what can he do for the fans on sundays.

If anything, they're both fools. The difference is one of them didn't get hurt engaging in their foolery. Think Belichick didn't have a talk with him once that story came out? And if JPP doesn't get hurt, nobody cares about this either.
Shockey was the model teammate and person. He never displayed any off field antics that made headlines or publicly bad-mouthed the team or got into a shouting match with his boss and got sent packing out of New York. Sure, he didn't injure himself or get suspended, but his immaturity put a dent in his production and wallet and character, in other ways.
And his off the field crap did cost the team on the field production. He wasn't that committed to his craft which explains why his career or lack of it has progressed to this point. And Parcells absolutely called it.
he was pretty productive during his tenure here as a Giant, leading multiple seasons in receiving/receptions ... he probably would of still continued to be very productive and key weapon in this offense ... funny how TE has been a revolving door of misfits since his departure

I disagree in the sense that if a story came out that said, "JPP buys truck full of fireworks and plans to light them himself", plenty of people would've said "WTF?" Just because we hear about it afterwards or we don't hear about it at all because no one (thankfully) got hurt doesn't make his decision less stupid.

Shockey reportedly consistently ran incorrect routes, leading to multiple Eli interceptions. Eli took a huge step once Shockey went down with inferior talents at TE. Eli has turned low-cost investments into incredibly productive players for the Giants, including Boss (left due to FA), Ballard (injuries), and Donnell.
Shockey is a great example of what Britt/Terps discussed early in the thread in ensuring your investing in guys with the right character.

Would have continued to be very productive and key weapon in this offense....if what? He hadn't been a douche? And while he was productive, he also made a slew of mistakes - some of them costly because he was an arrogant prick. Ask Eli Manning if he misses Jeremy Shockey. Given the choice between Shockey and some of the "misfits" like Boss, Ballard, or Bennett - I think he'd take the misfits any day. Both on the field and in the locker room.

Who's to say the slew of mistakes weren't on a young QB learning the nuisances of the NFL ... from what I also remember was a very shakey young rookie QB those first few years, you can not pin the mistakes solely on one player ... Anyway, everyone has missed my point, why even mention or draw comparison to Shockey when comparing him to JPP ... JPP is a moron, alienated a then 1st rd. rookie and has questionable commitment to his craft ...

I think we all know the partying and drinking stories.
So, when you see that he's breaking down and injured as a 26-28 year old, you know he wasn't really committed.
Would the Giants have put up with the antics on the field as long as he rolled up his sleeves and acted like he wanted to be the best? They've done that for other players.

he had issue with the newly appointed GM at the time, he was beloved by EA, but there was tension behind the scenes when Reese took over ... I do not think there as a Sunday where he was never the most fired up ready player on the field ... so stop with the preparation nonsense ...
I recall articles criticizing Shockey for not joining Eli's off-season workouts.

Quote:
Toomer said Shockey 'tried to take advantage' of Eli by pressuring him for the ball. He also said there was 'no question' Eli had improved his play after the distraction of Jeremy Shockey was gone from the locker room and from the huddle.
when there reports of properzi catching him partying the nite before. Fassel let him get away with absolute everything. Yet he claims he was treated like a zoo animal or something as a Giant to perform on the spot. Yeah, sounds like a guy who took his craft serious.
I usually hate to get involved in any Shockey talk because I'm
obviously biased and I think BBI has a tendency to form group think about certain players/coaches to which no stats/facts can penetrate those beliefs.
- Eli has led the league in INTs 3 times, twice after Shockey played his last game in Blue. Heck, Shockey didn't even play all of the games the one year Eli led the league in picks while he was still on the team. Enough with the Shockey route running as the source of Eli's picks nonsense. Eli throws a lot of picks. I love the guy, but he throws picks regardless of the receivers, offense, stadium, or opponent. You guys watched the San Francisco game last year, right? You would've thought Eli took a shit at midfield with the amount of complaining on BBI after the pick in Seattle last season.
- Shockey's problem wasn't off the field issues... he simply got hurt and wasn't the same physically. It happens to physical players and especially at that position. Kevin Boss' career was short. Jake Ballard's career was a shooting star. Whether players are angels off the field or not, they get hurt in this game. There are a thousand examples of guys who don't drink and party who get hurt all the damn time. It's just happens in this sport.
- Let's not compare JPP and Shockey, either as players or connect them somehow because of this incident. I like JPP, but he hasn't come close to matching his 2011 performance. Shockey was 1st team All-Pro as a rookie and was leading NFL TEs in catches (2nd in yards) at the time of his season-ending injury the next year. He ended up making 3 more Pro Bowls after his rookie season.
- Using Amani Toomer as evidence Shockey is a bad guy or selfish? The same Amani Toomer who accused the Giants coaching staff of "freezing him out" at the end of his career?
"No, because you know what? No matter what, they've got an agenda," Toomer said. "I could talk until I'm blue in the face, it's not going to make any difference. And you know from dealing with the head coach that's not how he is. You could talk to him, but if he has something in his mind that's what's going to go on."
So if we're only concerned with outcomes, and not risks, then if JPP is fine, we're good then right?
The outcome here was that JPP let an explosive donate in his hand, and he likely did this a few feet away from children and a van full of more explosives. If that's an outcome with which you want to associate yourself, good for you.
You're dismissing a lot of evidence to defend your boy.
I never said Jeremy was perfect. He acted like a jackass to force himself out of town. It's entirely possible he could've extended his career with better habits off the field. However, it's entirely possible he could've lived like a nun and still had the same physical issues... it happens all the time in this sport. No one ever questioned Mark Bavaro's work ethic and his career was almost the exact same length as Shockey's (and Mark missed more games).
what kind of firework was it? If it was a blockbuster, then he is in
big trouble because the explosion and extreme heat can splinter off pieces of the fingers and Nerve damage happens up through the wrist. This happened to my cousin years ago.
Is the Frachise tender with the league office? Or is there a contract that is in the hands of his agent that has to be signed and sent to the Giants for signature? Anyone know?
see this link, it sounds unlikely, otherwise I believe the process is simple they'd just rescind the offer , but it doesn't sound like that is going to happen
Quote:
Insider Buzz: Giants 'Not Likely' to Rescind Jason Pierre-Paul's Franchise Tag
Those of you saying fireworks are OK or safe because you do them is silly, anyone who thinks it is safe to do them drunk is a moron, stop posting. My family counts on me to support them. I care about them too much to risk injury for a boom or a flash of lights. There a many fun things that I choose not to do because I am a responsible adult. A football player in the middle of the biggest contract negotiation of life choosing to light off fireworks is a person who does think things through, I question his judgment. He just lost millions doing this, some people say he still may lose his hand. He is still in the hospital, I am in the medical industry, you do not usually keep people in the hospital for non serious injuries.
Fireworks in the handle of the public are too dangerous, I live in WA state and multiple fires near me were caused do to fireworks.
Scroll through some those photos, imagine your house fire because you live near a moron. think about those firefighter being in danger because loud noises and pretty lights are fun. Leave fireworks in the hands of professionals. The ones you buy are cheaply made and prone to catastrophic failures. If you keep setting them off eventually you will hurt yourself or someone you care about, for what?
As much as I'd like to pile on I enjoy lighting off some fireworks July 4th. In my defense, here in MD ground based sparklers are legal, so I'm not messing with any mortar type stuff. I'm guessing from shots of the Uhaul he had that he was playing with the illegal kinda stuff that only people with permits are allowed to buy.
he wouldn't be losing $15 million if it happened he'd be making a fortune to the highest bidder in that scenario.
This is one of those things that has a small chance of working out well for the player, as ass-backwards as that would be.
JPP probably lost all his leverage in refusing to sign tender and getting a long-term deal. This hurts JPP unless he plays on tender and plays really well next season. After July 15, his options are to play on tender or sit out. You think the Giants are going to resign him to a long term deal now. Whatever the situation, the Giants would want him this year, unless he is definitely out for the year. They already allocAted the money. so, unless JPP would miss a significant part of the season, the Giants will keep the tender and not negotiate a long term deal with him before the 15th. If they rescind it because he can't play, well then, who is going to give him big money at this point. So, he will lose the franchise money of 15 mill this year. This is not good for JPP
Good riddance
That being said, JPP is not the sharpest tool in the shed, so this would not surprise me.
I mean he's done right?
I would say he needs at 1 finger to make a valid tackling attempt
If it's true, I pull his franchise tender and tell him to hit the road.
Lol you have no idea how to use Twitter if you think that's true. There about coming in every 20-30 seconds about it
You aren't looking hard enough.
PFT has tweeted about it, although they are just citing the original tweet. But it's been up long enough where the Giants could have flat out denied it already if it weren't true
What a shame.
If it's not signed it can be pulled at any time.
This is bad for him and sad for us fans if this is true.
Hopefully, it's just some nonsense someone picked up and ran with, although PFT rolling with it makes me think there may be some truth here.

This is how news breaks though all the time, all you have to do is type in "Jason Pierre Paul" in Twitter and search all the tweets. You see the most popular ones up top then a constant stream of the new ones coming in.
If true, what an idiot. Glad he didn't sign his tender yet.
We need to get a clearer picture
He is so dumb it actually hurts, and that was before this happened.

No idea how that works
Not yet, but the Giants not denying it at this point is very telling. This fire could have been put out quickly, and hasn't been.

He posted an instagram video yesterday next to that uhaul truck. It was cringe worthy.

Team and fans? If true, this rocket scientist just cost himself millions...
Never mind the fans. He doesn't have an NFL contract right now strictly speaking.
LOL. Unbelievable post, huh?

I'm embarrassed to be from the same generation as him. Our generation of athletes are absolutely LOLworthy.
Well, there was Plax.
LMAO.

I never heard of anything so idiotic let alone in a contract year. I'm embarrassed this man is associated with the Giants. That is my feeling right now. He cost himself and his family money over fireworks.
Well, there was Plax.
Oh man but at least he signed his deal before he tucked a gun in his jogging pants to go to a club. Oh boy, I couldn't even type that without laughing. Just stupid.
Or would he be unable to pass a physical at this point, meaning that no team would deign to offer him a deal?
Depends on the severity of the injuries. If he does have partially missing fingers, no one is signing him this year.
I don't know what's dumber. JPP injuring himself of saying with fireworks or Radar and his consistent absurdity.

Who knows how it happened it could have been something that wasn't his fault.
I have no sympathy for grown people doing stupid shit. Give him an honorary Darwin award.

I think it goes without saying that all of us hope he's OK.
At least the strength and conditioning guy won't get blamed for this injury.
That said I hope he's alright for his own sake. The Giants will obviously get up to date on his status asap and decide where we go from here.

Humans are complex beings with the ability to feel multiple emotions at one time. Why do you think JR start drafting team captains.

Agree 1000%
Smart people sit out of OTAs without a contract during negotiations of what they hope is the biggest contract that can secure the financial security for them and their family. Smart people don't follow that up a few weeks later by playing with fireworks to the point where they damaged one of their hands.

The Giants have succeeded with a number of poor characters, including the two mentioned. Stupid events of this magnitude can't be predicted, and every team has a few guys they worry about to some degree.. I've been wary of signing JPP long-term for the concerns you've cited, however.
Anyway, even if it was foolish, he wasn't under contract to anybody at the time he did it and owed nobody anything.
Or better yet, Dez Bryant.

Yeah and buying a "truckload" of them too. I hope he is ok and that his injuries are not career threatening. I hope he learns from this. I hope the Giants get a bit of a contract discount based upon his stupidity. He obviously screwed his future contracts with other teams now too.
Lets see the final reports.
We could sign some olineman like Mathis
Same goes for if it were you or me or my next door neighbor. Falling off a ladder while fixing the roof is an accident. Dropping a knife on the foot while you're cooking dinner is an accident. This is no accident.
That is interesting question. This year it would kill us, in the years coming ahead, not sure from a football perspective if signing him long term is a good decision for us. We are paying him pass rusher money and besides 2011 and the end of last year, he has never shown us to be an elite pass rusher
I think they can roll over to next year but not 100%
Well, stupid is a continuum.
Considering this took place in Florida JPP should consider himself lucky...

This story gets better and better. Wow.

Along with his fingers, JPP probably blew up at least 35 millions dollars. Unbelievable.
That said, the smart move is probably to pull the offer based on the logic that he's not likely to play at a $14.8MM level this year. That's the cruel facts.
And that's partially why I feel so terrible for JPP.

Victims were asked whether there were any long-term consequences of their
injuries. Most (33 of 35, or 94 percent) expected complete recoveries with no long-term effects.

Reallocate the money in the best possible way, whatever that is.
LMAO!!!!

If those are high expectations then I am guilty as charged.
to the best of my knowledge this has happened once in Spags career, the 2007 Giants, 2008 started this way, but once injuries hit the guys replacing the injured guys didn't do their jobs.
anyway, that comment in theory is probably true about all DC's - not a big deal.

It seems he burned his palm and fingertips.
My cousin, Ezekiel (who's seven years older), used to set off these big blocks of gun powder. When they went off, they shook the whole block.
That went on till he got too close to my aunt's house, where concussion broke the windows.
I hope JPP's OK and am happy he didn't blow off his fingers (some of the stuff smuggled in from Mexico can still do that).

You trying to mock someone defines irony.
Just shut the fuck up, FEK...
Jason Pierre-Paul expected to meet with doctors, they will have their say, but early indications are, hand injury is not career threatening.
Good to hear.
I can sympathize with this situation with our own fellow pass rusher.

That said I hope he's alright for his own sake. The Giants will obviously get up to date on his status asap and decide where we go from here.

JPP has burns on palm, 3 fingers. 1 finger could have nerve damage. Didn't lose any fingers, team thinks he'll be OK, per @DanGrazianoESPN.
Still a fucking dope.

To be even clearer, my sense is some folks think Pierre-Paul is very, very fortunate he didn't suffer a worse injury.
Dan Graziano @DanGrazianoESPN 12m12 minutes ago
I am told Pierre-Paul has some burns on one hand and they are checking his fingers for nerve damage but prognosis is not terrible.

So he has nerve damage in one finger?

Not at all. My point is JPP didn't help his case at all today if he's trying to get a longterm deal with the Giants. Ordering a van full of fireworks and nearly blowing your hand off is enough to scare off most teams, and that definitely includes a team like the Giants.
well you know him better than I do, I just don't like to jump to conclusions about people, especially in terms of racism. not much worse than being labeled a racist. especially if not true, it reminds me of the salem witch trials. someone randomly or with little evidence says "witch" and it's a death sentence.
Again . Get off your high horses and stop being the morality police.
If JPP never put on a chain in his life he is still be an asshole.
This thread is about a moron blowing off fireworks in his hand. End of story.
As someone pointed out the last time I heard about this was Coleman who was throwing firecrackers at the Mets beat writers in LA that injured that little girl. I think Coleman handlers tried that whole "youthful" angle but no one was buying it.

PJ...Exactly. You can't say anything here without someone twisting it into racism. Then again, who gives a shit what a few jackasses on a Giants message board think?
We have bad luck, for sure. My only thing on Beatty v JPP is that Beatty was trying to get better for the team. He want being irresponsible.
It's a couple steps away. Kindly fuck off Bill, if you're going to twist my comments.

But it is a good way to shield someone from criticism I suppose.
I'm not one to normally care about guys being douchebags, morons, etc, but the Giants (or any team) would be just as dumb as he is to invest in a major longterm deal for him.
Of course I hope JPP is OK, and his playing career resumes unaffected, and I'm not among those yelling for the Giants to get rid of him.
Just always amazes me how these guys who have the talent to have these lucrative careers seem to invent new stupid ways to jeopardize them.

And, hey, maybe they actually learned something from giving Plaxico an extension when they didn't even have to touch his contract at the time.
Just my opinion, but they probably have a bigger problem with the fact that he and his agent are angling for a blockbuster contract more than the fear that he's going to get sent to jail or whatnot.

No one said he might go to jail in the future. It's just about maybe not trusting someone who hasn't completely grown up yet, which last night proved in spades. If anything, last night hurt the chances of the Giants changing their mind and making a long term commitment on the guy.
The only real problem with it was how truly braindead all involved had to be to put it up online for all to see.

I was going to ask does he even need to inform the Giants of his injury updates. I thought he took his physical just a few weeks ago when he was at the facility. The only thing left was for him to sign the tender.
I'm perfectly fine with never seeing JPP in a Giants uniform again and that's coming from someone who wouldn't have suspended Plax after his shooting.
He has no leverage whatsoever in negotiations with the Giants after this. None. Wouldn't be surprised if the Giants let him walk after the season.
Deal with it and stop the whining and finger pointing.
Doesn't take a big genius to rush the passer and stop the run.
My feelings too Pete.
a quick google indicates that in Florida, consumer fireworks are limited to the 'sparkler' category similar to what is now allowed in NY. Unless it malfunctions, these don't explode. I wonder if he had illegal fireworks, or if he was dumb enough to try holding one of the showering fountains?

No shit. But careless off field behavior can keep you from being on it. Case in point.
We already saw this with Plax. You want to risk it again?
You handle the risk with every player, and the more risky guys you hedge the best you can. The Giants have done well with this under JR. With a player with variable productivity and health like JPP, they will construct any offer to protect themselves. If he doesn't bite, they'll let him walk. They've shipped of truly bad fits like Shockey, and they've constructed contracts to get out of with players like Burress and Bradshaw who showed character and behavior concerns.
But if they drop the tender and bate another team to steal JPP the stupid tax is on them.
having said that, I am sure he will not be ready for the opener, wont be able to lift, and was not intending on attending camp to begin with ... the funny thing to see will be whether he changes his stance and now shows up at camp in order to look like a good employee ...

JPP is 26 years old. He's not that young anymore. Time to grow up. He may not be a criminal but he is an immature idiot - less like Plaxico and more like Jeremy Shockey.
The only thing that is dumb is you bringing up an injury from playing a pickup game of soccer to a guy who may or may not have almost blown his hand off (but at the very least did enough damage to wind up in the hospital) with a firework.
Well said.

Playing soccer is an attempt at staying in shape. If JPP hurt himself playing basketball or soccer, I'd have no issue and treat it the same as Beatty.
See Big Blue Blogger's thread on this. The team is not on the hook for non football injuries with respect to guaranteed money
at this point, we don't know the extent of the burns, nor whether there is nerve damage.

I don't know the stats, but if I had to guess, there are more catastrophic firework injuries, but many more of the injuries that Rory suffered in soccer than fireworks, which would keep an athlete out of his sport for a significant time.

If you dont think Shockey was an immature asshole then I don't know what to tell you. He made plenty of headlines off the field, even with the Saints. I'm not calling JPP an asshole (maybe he is, I dont know) but he is really immature and this is a pretty good example of it.

And if JPP doesn't get hurt, nobody cares about this either.
he was pretty productive during his tenure here as a Giant, leading multiple seasons in receiving/receptions ... he probably would of still continued to be very productive and key weapon in this offense ... funny how TE has been a revolving door of misfits since his departure

And his off the field crap did cost the team on the field production. He wasn't that committed to his craft which explains why his career or lack of it has progressed to this point. And Parcells absolutely called it.

And this is really all I was saying when I mentioned Shockey.
I just suck at English.
I used to really like Shockey. I can relate to being extremely good-looking and talented.

And let's not act like having a BAC of 1.0 most days of the week is proper. Taking care of your body is part of the job.
We also have this:
Evidence points to Shockey being a shitty teammate.
Bleacher Report - ( New Window )
You could talk to him, but if he has something in his mind that's what's going to go on."
and
"Fact that JPP remains in hospital 36 hrs or so after accident tells you damage not minor #Giants"
Toomer wasn't the only person who criticized Shockey's attitude.
You're dismissing a lot of evidence to defend your boy.
The outcome here was that JPP let an explosive donate in his hand, and he likely did this a few feet away from children and a van full of more explosives. If that's an outcome with which you want to associate yourself, good for you.
If only he were as smart as you, Rich.
Is the Frachise tender with the league office? Or is there a contract that is in the hands of his agent that has to be signed and sent to the Giants for signature? Anyone know?

Fireworks in the handle of the public are too dangerous, I live in WA state and multiple fires near me were caused do to fireworks.

http://www.wsp.wa.gov/fire/statistics.htm
Scroll through some those photos, imagine your house fire because you live near a moron. think about those firefighter being in danger because loud noises and pretty lights are fun. Leave fireworks in the hands of professionals. The ones you buy are cheaply made and prone to catastrophic failures. If you keep setting them off eventually you will hurt yourself or someone you care about, for what?

This is not good for JPP
and

Or he has GREAT insurance.

Well, this was fun.
do you mean rescind the franchise tag? I believe that's still a possibility once they learn the extent of the injury.
hard to see paying $15M for a player who won't be able to be 100% (if that's the case), a lot riding on this medical eval
