Well, stupid is a continuum.

First of all, Hope he's ok and not career threatening. But, even if all limbs are in tact, wouldn't you think nerves of hand also involved? Let's see what final outcome of this.

robbieballs2003 : 7/5/2015 7:14 pm : link
(As crazy as it sounded earlier) where he was doing something noble. Odds are it wasn't. Posting pictures of fireworks tells me this was something stupid. Yes, bad things can happen when playing basketball but you could argue that it is helping players stay in shape. At some point you can't just live in a bubble until the following football season. As another poster pointed out, there is a correct and safe way to handle fireworks and there is the opposite. When I was younger I would light off fireworks but I would always do it in a proper manner and I am talking when I was a child. When I look back on it now I should have never been allowed to light them off. I'm not talking about sparklers. I'm talking heavy duty stuff. Also, you know that at these fourth of July parties that there is also alcohol involved. I'm not saying JPP was drinking but odds are people were which makes the whole situation very dangerous. Everybody wants to light them off and with the amount of fireworks that were posted I'm assuming (I know what happens when you assume) this was not done in an orderly and safe way.

It doesn't matter what you do, there are risks and rewards to anything. You could get in a car accident driving to work like Weatherford. But what some people are missing is that there are necessary evils and there are just unnecessary ones. This was 100% an unnecessary evil. There was no benefit from it other than personal satisfaction. People bring up motorcycles and I out them in the same category as this. This is not to criticize anybody who rides a motorcycle but I would only get on one with no traffic around. I have seen a lot of poor driving from people with motorcycles but even if you are a good driver on a bike it just takes one false move by someone else to end your life. A simple fender bender in a car and everybody is alright. If that same thing happens on a bike then that driver could be dead. Just the other day I am driving home and I see the highway in the other direction closed. I keep driving and I see a bike. I driver further and I see a cop with a board up. I keep driving and I get an angle where I saw the driver dead on the side of the road while the cop was putting markers down for the evidence. It was heart wrenching.

Back to my earlier point, I feel bad for people when things happen to them out of their control. I have a very hard time feeling bad for people that bring bad things upon themselves. I feel bad for a person that got laid off due to downsizing. I don't feel bad for a person that got laid off because they consistently show up late to work. This situation so far sounds like this is JPP making bad decision. Yes, we are all human and make mistakes but life is not fair and some mistakes are worse than others. Yes, I am glad to hear that he is alright. As a human I never like to see bad things happen to other people or animals. But as a Giants fan and season ticket holder I wouldn't be upset if we did pull the FT offer and used our money elsewhere. It also helps that I am a big fan of Moore and Odi. I also really liked what I saw from Ayers last year. I also believe Selvie can be a nice role player for us as well. Plus, I am sure there will be situations where Kennard may have his hand in the turf too. While ideally we would have JPP return to form when he was at his peak to make our team stronger I see way more negatives with him overall and to commit a ton of money to him long term is riskier than JPP dealing with fireworks.
Well, things could have been worse

Even if you're careful. Even when you're sober.
These things are illegal in most states and therefor the ones ordinary people buy are made in foreign countries, like China and Mexico.
Do you trust the Chinese and Mexicans to carry out good quality control for export fireworks? I wouldn't.
You never know when you are going to light a fuse that is too short. Result, an explosion in your hand, the loss of fingers, the loss of an eye or two.
Even the professionals hired by cities to put on displays have serious accidents.
Leave them alone.

Potentially life-changing injury. Self-inflicted.

That said, the smart move is probably to pull the offer based on the logic that he's not likely to play at a $14.8MM level this year. That's the cruel facts.

And that's partially why I feel so terrible for JPP.

As a total aside is the fact that this pretty much crushes any chance of our defense developing into any kind of elite unit this year.

I disagree with that last part. The important thing about Spags D is that everybody has a job to do and if they do then good things happen. He will find the weaknesses in an offense and try to exploit them. That is why I made the comment that Beason is a very important part to this D. It isn't for his physical ability but rather his mental capacity as well as his work ethic. He needs to be an extension of Spags. They players trust him. He has communicated with Antonio Pierce. JPP would be a nice piece to have but I don't think our success rides with him.

Of course those are percentages of all fireworks injuries not the percentages of JPP specific injuries which of course we don't even know the extent of yet.

Granted - you can get hurt doing just about anything, and these guys do have lives. But, if Tom Brady's hang glider were to fold up and him plummet to his death (knock wood), I'm pretty sure the consensus would still be 'rich guy dying doing something he shouldn't have been doing'.

No different with JPP. We've probably all lit some fireworks at some point in our lives, but none of us have ever had that much at stake if something went wrong. If my hands were largely required for my multi-million dollar living, I'm pretty sure there'd be a lot more activities that I wouldn't go anywhere near. Hard to defend him when he's standing next to a rental van full of explosives.

what Spags D has been even remotely successful?

The only one I know of had Strahan, Osi and Tuck in their primes, Kiwi (a still good Kiwi), Cofield, Robbins, etc.

that's not pedestrian guys (like the Giants have other than JPP and Hankins) doing their jobs. That's a stacked D - especially a stacked D-line.

seriously, not being a dick, but what other Spags D was good with just guys doing their jobs?

He had Strahan for one year. His defense was better without him. Why do you think that is? Yes, he had talent along the DL but Osi was also basically ran out of town because of his run defense. He also had average at best talent everywhere else. It isn't like we were playing video games. Guys like Antonio Pierce, McQuarters, Webster, Mitchell, our undrafted safeties, etc. had to do their jobs as well.

I really don't want to turn this into a Spags discussion. My point is simple, a D is more than one player. No one player ever made a defense, not even LT. JPP hasn't given us much when it mattered over the last couple of years. If it is all about JPP then by your logic we are going to suck defensively next year because we have sucked defensively for the past several years with JPP.

I just think you are setting the expectations too high
pjcas18 : 7/5/2015 7:52 pm : link
for Spags.

I do think the secondary will be good if DRC and Prince stay healthy, no clue what to expect at S with the rookie Collins and either Taylor Behre or other.

I think LB can better is Beason stays healthy (LOL) along side Kennard, and I think the DL can be a disaster with whoever is alongside JPP and Hankins.

The D has been bad and without JPP I think it will be worse.

Even Spags can't fix personnel IMO.

Go back and watch XLII (I know you know it as well as I do) and tell me how bad Osi was run out of town, it was much later. he had 5 more seasons after that SB and 4 more after Spags left. Tuck was elite. and one year of Strahan, but he was in tip top HOF shape.

not to mention Cofield and Robbins inside.

that line was among the best in Giants history IMO.

My only point is I think people expect too much from Spags.

I don't know the stats off the top of my head, but I read his defense along the way since leaving the Giants were pretty bad.

You are totally taking what I am saying and twisting it. I loved Osi. He played the run very well under Spags. Why? Did he all of a sudden forget how to play it under Sheridan? You are taking this too far. My simple comment was that JPP is not the deciding factor on whether our D is good or sucks. If that was the case then we should just pack it in right now.

I don't give a shit about Spags' stint in STL as a HC nor his stint in NO after Payton and Williams and players were suspended. And, like I said, just having a great DL doesn't mean you will be good. Others have to make plays. This isn't a video game where the DL wins every play. Especially in today's NFL, offenses minimize the DL with their quick game. You have to be sound across the board, be on the same page, line up right, know your responsibility, listen to the adjustments, etc.

I don't know how else to explain this. I never said we will dominate on defense. I never said Spags is the son of Christ. All I said was that our defense will not crumble if we don't have JPP. If those are high expectations then I am guilty as charged.

to the best of my knowledge this has happened once in Spags career, the 2007 Giants, 2008 started this way, but once injuries hit the guys replacing the injured guys didn't do their jobs.

But these injuries are 100% avoidable and he has SO much riding on this season in terms of getting paid, to put himself in position like this is just dumbfounding. Never mind his commitment to his teammates or the NYG.

Just an incredibly stupid and sad situation. If you were to tell me this happened to a Giants player and asked me to guess who, I would have guessed JPP.

In the 50s (black cats, M-80s & Cherry Bombs).

My cousin, Ezekiel (who's seven years older), used to set off these big blocks of gun powder. When they went off, they shook the whole block.

That went on till he got too close to my aunt's house, where concussion broke the windows.

I hope JPP's OK and am happy he didn't blow off his fingers (some of the stuff smuggled in from Mexico can still do that).
