Yes, you can have compassion on a human level. However, he is getting paid a lot of money not only to perform on the field but to make sure he CAN perform on the field. By accepting his pay check, he is making a commitment to the Giants, the rest of the players, coaches and the fans. If not for the entire group I just mentioned, there wouldn't be millions of dollars there for him.
This is just another example of someone being stupid. Reminds me of that point guard from Georgetown or Duke years ago. He got drafted and before he could play in his first game he had a motorcycle accident and ended his career. Probably never rode a motorcycle before and now that he had the money, he went out to buy a crotch rocket.
This is why some teams put restrictions on what some of the athletes are allowed to do off of the field.
