Apparently JPP injured his hand

JPP has burns on palm, 3 fingers. 1 finger could have nerve damage. Didn't lose any fingers, team thinks he'll be OK, per @DanGrazianoESPN.

So he has nerve damage in one finger?

Nerve issue in a palm or finger tip could easily mean loss of touch sensation which isn't likely to effect his ability to tackle someone. If he didn't wildly mess up his hand this won't change his game at all.

The Giants have always been wise when constructing contracts for risky guys and any long term deal with JPP was always going to protect them. This isn't going to change anything if he's ok.

Is should the NYG move on from JPP?

Before this incident there were 3 groups of fans
1) offering him the tag was a mistake, he had 1 amazing year, hasn't stayed healthy and isn't worth 15 mm

2) 15 mm for 1 yr is a smart move. Jpp doesn't deserve a long term deal. He played well down the stretch. He'll be motivated and produce.

3) sign him long term. He's a good not great player. He is a difference maker and we need him.

I was in group 2). My mind has changed. I'm now in group 1) regardless of if he can play.
not sure what people expect

it's football.

the salary cap doesn't make an exception for your star DE blowing up fireworks in his hand.

not to be insensitive or racist (though I in no way see how this can be construed as racist but on this site everything is racist), depending on the severity the Giants need to consider rescinding the FT.

maybe work out a one-year deal.

How would the greatest fans on the planet react to potentially losing their best player on defense?

A prayer/get well thread (to a person who will never see it)? I think it's pretty implied that all Giants fans are hoping for the best possible outcome for JPP, but at the same time are wondering the football impact and I don't think that makes anyone a bad fan.

I didn't see anything racist, but if there were racist comments that's disgusting and not representative of a fan base.

Very little chance he gets a long term deal now, unless he comes very, very cheap.

I'm not saying racism doesn't exist and I'm not saying it doesn't exists on BBI, but the poster explained afterwards he considered Shockey unsophisticated as well. I'd never use that term to describe an athlete but how is that racist?

unveiled, thinly veiled or any veil.

seems like sometimes people are over sensitive and just jump to the "that's racist" determination.

anyway, I'm done with this. everything comes down to race on here.

Not at all. My point is JPP didn't help his case at all today if he's trying to get a longterm deal with the Giants. Ordering a van full of fireworks and nearly blowing your hand off is enough to scare off most teams, and that definitely includes a team like the Giants.
I know he responded saying Shockey was as well

that comment also screams of an elitist douchebag at best. I have a suspicion that he threw in Shockey to cover his tracks. I find it quite peculiar that he has recently gone right after Flowers (and his dad), and has a hard on for piling on JPP.

well you know him better than I do, I just don't like to jump to conclusions about people, especially in terms of racism. not much worse than being labeled a racist. especially if not true, it reminds me of the salem witch trials. someone randomly or with little evidence says "witch" and it's a death sentence.

So only black people wear gold chains? I don't know how old you guys are or what quiet suburb you live in but I'd say that >80% of the population of NYC males between the ages of 20-30 wear a gold chain. Black, White, Hispanic, etc.

The MAN is 26 years old. We're not talking about some bad decision of rushing into marriage, investing in a ponzi scheme or buying a house you can't afford. We are talking lighting off fireworks carelessly to the point of severely damaging your hand. What's next advising him not to play in the street??? Come on.

As someone pointed out the last time I heard about this was Coleman who was throwing firecrackers at the Mets beat writers in LA that injured that little girl. I think Coleman handlers tried that whole "youthful" angle but no one was buying it.

I'd prefer those resources to go to a player or players who have proved to have brains in there heads when making everyday decisions ... This isn't hard to figure out ... The NYG's will not make poor investment decisions ... Right now this guy is a defaulted credit ... I bet he wishes now that he had signed and agreed to whatever terms were initially offered ... All you can see is a declined value at this point ... And from a standpoint of trust, you have to question the thought process ...

But it is a good way to shield someone from criticism I suppose.
If JPP has a monster year in 2015, they could just tag him again.
Devon : 7/5/2015 10:40 pm : link
They could structure any possible extensions for Prince and Eli to eat the hit just fine in 2016.

I'm not one to normally care about guys being douchebags, morons, etc, but the Giants (or any team) would be just as dumb as he is to invest in a major longterm deal for him.

As I mentioned Big Ben riding motorcycle without helmet. STUPID. Brady cliff diving. STUPID. And of all of them, Brady is certainly old enough to know better. Both things probably more stupid than playing with fireworks when you're a million dollar athlete. But not by much.

Of course I hope JPP is OK, and his playing career resumes unaffected, and I'm not among those yelling for the Giants to get rid of him.

Just always amazes me how these guys who have the talent to have these lucrative careers seem to invent new stupid ways to jeopardize them.

while knowing behind the scenes what kind of headcase he was for the team, and concealing it for years. We only found out after he was long gone what kind of problem he was.

I don't think we need to equate this to a drug problem, or a domestic disturbance police call. He's never been arrested, he's never failed a substance test, he's never been a story in the newspapers before now and from what we've been told he's a good teammate and locker room presence.

No one is saying he is a bad person. But it's not a stretch to see why the Giants were hesitant to give him a longterm deal in the offseason, and an incident like this likely just reaffirms their stance. It will be interesting to see what happens next offseason. But with a conservative franchise like the Giants, I wouldn't be shocked at all if they let someone else sign him, especially if someone else is offering him a bigger contract.
Based on what some in the know have said, most of the reason the
Devon : 7/5/2015 10:54 pm : link
team hasn't shown JPP the money this offseason is because of their concerns regarding his maturity, commitment, etc. I highly doubt this incident is going to ease their worries.

And, hey, maybe they actually learned something from giving Plaxico an extension when they didn't even have to touch his contract at the time.
Some here need to chill out
Marty866b : 7/5/2015 10:57 pm : link
By all accounts,JPP is a good guy. He may or may not be the hardest working or one who makes the best decisions but he hasn't been suspended, arrested, etc. So he is a big kid and does immature stuff. I hope this teaches JPP a hard lesson and he straightens himself out and becomes the best football player he can be for the NY Giants. This is not even close to carrying a concealed weapon and shooting yourself.
my point is more that those types of problems are what the team
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/5/2015 10:57 pm : link
looks to avoid. Childish mischief is correctable. I think they make a distinction between 'bad guy' and 'knucklehead'. If they wanted to pay him, this probably wouldn't change their mind.

Just my opinion, but they probably have a bigger problem with the fact that he and his agent are angling for a blockbuster contract more than the fear that he's going to get sent to jail or whatnot.

The ship has sailed for his big pay day as each day moving fwrd from this incident only lessens the value of his worth. He would of been smart to agree to terms that were probably already offered and rejected by his camp.

No one said he might go to jail in the future. It's just about maybe not trusting someone who hasn't completely grown up yet, which last night proved in spades. If anything, last night hurt the chances of the Giants changing their mind and making a long term commitment on the guy.
