Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul injured his hands in a fireworks accident in South Florida, according to ESPN sources and multiple reports. A source tells ESPN that Pierre-Paul has bad burns on his palm and tips of three fingers. One finger is being checked for nerve damage, but the source said it is believed Pierre-Paul will be fine.
If you don't know what you are doing than don't do it!
When I first heard this report I told myself two things:
1. I hope it ain't bad. Praying....
2. If it is bad, at least he hasn't signed his tender!
I mean, if this injury cost him say camp and maybe beyond, do you pay him all that money or let him go? I say let him go and likely get a #3 compensation pick for him as someone would sign him to big money.
Let's hope there is no nerve damage as well and he's able to participate at camp at some point. The guy has been training hard. From pictures & videos, he looks really fit.
"he'll be fine" is vague. severe burns/nerve damage to finger tips means you could lose sensation/feeling. when i had my acl done they damaged a nerve and to this day i cant feel when i kneel on it. it's numb
if that happens it will be tough to get anything done in the NFL. praying for the best
I am not thrilled with the team tying up so much $$$$$ in this guy and have very little faith that he is going to get better. I believe the Giants are lukewarm as well. How can u be so foolish when there is that much $$$ on the table and technically you don't have a contract? I will not be upset when his ship sets sail.
Its hard enough to understand why anyone would put their life, health and career in jeopardy by doing something as dangerous as playing with fireworks. But its almost impossible to understand what was going through the mind of Jason Pierre-Paul this weekend, considering everything else he had at stake.
Because at this point in his offseason the only thing the 26-year-old defensive end shouldve been doing with his hand was signing the one-year, $14.813 million contract offer thats been sitting on his table since late February
one year, giving Moore, Odi and others a chance to get acclimated and then let JPP go. Note that his one dominant season was 2011, when Osi, Tuck, Kiwi and Canty all had plenty in the tank. JPP isn't the guy who makes the others better. He needs others to make him better.
Worse for him, this incident just confirms the suspicions many have about him. Not the sharpest tool in the shed.
starting off with the Mets after JPP almost blows off his hand ,I swear this station sucks and its not even a mets station anymore thats the funny thing

I was on the road last week and listened to the FAN for the first time in a while...NBA free agency, the US Women making a World Cup run, and what were they talking about for an hour?
The Mets bullpen.
It's pretty funny actually, but not worth listening to
In FAN's defense, there really isn't much out there on the JPP
incident. I've been on SI.com, CBSSports.com, mainly just wire reports and no real news, just speculation. Even Ralph V's piece is more a commentary on JPP's stupidity, no real news about the injury.
like "why would he risk it all over fireworks" or "why not hire a professional." Look, I'm assuming many of you don't live in states where you can buy fireworks and set them off legally. Every since I moved to Utah from New York I've been setting off fireworks. It's fun. I even do it drunk, sometimes very drunk. It's a simple process, you light and run.
I've never hurt myself doing it. I've never seen one of my equally drunk friends hurt themselves doing this. You act like these guys should stay in their houses and train for football non-stop. I think its badass he rented a Uhaul and filled it with fireworks. If I had large amounts of money thats probably exactly what I would do.
For all we know this was a freak accident where a firework exploded weird or early and hit his hand. He could have also been holding it to set it off...which would be dumb. The point is stop being your parents.
There would be nothing unfortunate about pulling the tender

Right...drive in any city/town that has legal fireworks on the 4th, there are at least 3 houses per street setting these off, very commonplace and pretty safe assuming you are taking basic precautions.
to outdo Plax in terms of being the biggest dumb@ass in Giants history! I think it's neck and neck as JPP probably just cost himself millions of dollars in market value (this isn't the first strike against him either). whether or not he fully recovers, he's got massive risk associated with his commitment and intelligence.

the fact that there is not comment at all from NYG is very troublesome. Nothing, not even a tweet from Hanlon. And a Miami reporter still posting the worst?
I pray the man is going to be ok.
From a Giants perspective I think they had mixed feelings about him as a player anyway even disregarding the contract and now this incident.
Even if he was in the middle of a 5 yr contract they were looking for another impact DE; likely as his replacement.

of the people around him. He is a 26 year old kid.
This is a time where a role model or strong figure makes all the difference.
Someone that say "let the other idiots blow shit up, you have a career to worry about"
Problem is most of the players that get in trouble have no one to whisper in their ear that's probably not a smart move, instead they have jealous hanger on's encouraging poor behavior.

True, gotta be on morphine I'd think. Most people have had at least second degree burns before and know how painful that is. JPP likely has minimum 3rd and possibly 4th degree burns.

My first reaction was "Holy shit!" But my guess is that you are definitely under 25 years old. The pre-frontal cortex has not fully developed yet. I hope you make it.
36 hours ago, 1000 miles from team HQ, on a holiday weekend in the part of the team's schedule where staff take vacations.
The Giants aren't going to make any decisions until after their medical folks get first-hand information. That might have happened today, but probably not any earlier.
tweeting well wishes to a great team leader. If this is an example of the intelligence level of one of the influential Giant players noted for their leadership ability then things are much worse then one can imagine.
Not really true about the 36 hour thing. The protocol in that situation has to be to keep him protected from infection. If he has open wounds, and I assume he does, he'll be on antibiotic drips that require hospitalization. The guy blew bits of hand off, I'm sure it's not just a one day tape up and he's sent off job the hospital is doing.

Typical WFAN. They got to address all of those fun Met trades that have no chance of happening. Idiots galore.
to make his millions thanks to his intelligence, but to assume he has none at all is kind of stupidly unfair. It's like you guys read this report and conjure a mental image of JPP blankly staring at the rapidly-diminishing lit fuse of a firecracker that remains in his tight grasp.
It's probably safe to generally assume that people who injure themselves with firecrackers are not likely to be intellectually gifted, but it's also possible that he operated within the generally accepted parameters of fireworks usage and the thing was faulty.
If he and Giants sign tender (tag) contract - is it guaranteed or can the Giants cut him and not lose $??
once signed it's guaranteed. I think NFI (non-football injuries) allow them to NOT pay him, but I'm not sure sure.
At this point it's not signed though.
I am pretty sure that since the tender was not signed AND he suffered a non-football injury the Giants can't rescind the tender and be done with JPP. He'd be a free agent able to sign with anyone else.
I think it will be at least a few days before we see what the Giants are going to do here. Much of the decision will be based on the extent of his injuries. I mean, if he is expected to be limited early in the year do you pay him all that money AND deal with all the "talk" regarding the accident?
Given today's NFL, the salary cap, the injury, etc., I think you play this one smart. If JPP will be 100% by day 1 of camp you pay him and let him play out the year. The incident has likely humbled JPP a bit and that may be the silver lining in all of this.
If you cut bait with him someone will likely still sign him to big enough money to get us a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick I'd think? Hard to say right now.
Hoping for good health & JPP's humbleness / gratitude to shine through.

My first reaction was "Holy shit!" But my guess is that you are definitely under 25 years old. The pre-frontal cortex has not fully developed yet. I hope you make it.
I basically treat those things as if they were made in a poorly-regulated factory by disinterested and underpaid people in a foreign country.
The Giants aren't going to make any decisions until after their medical folks get first-hand information. That might have happened today, but probably not any earlier.
I guess we won't have to worry about him "grabbing" instead of "tackling". :-)

Typical WFAN. They got to address all of those fun Met trades that have no chance of happening. Idiots galore.

once signed it's guaranteed. I think NFI (non-football injuries) allow them to NOT pay him, but I'm not sure sure.
At this point it's not signed though.
It's probably safe to generally assume that people who injure themselves with firecrackers are not likely to be intellectually gifted, but it's also possible that he operated within the generally accepted parameters of fireworks usage and the thing was faulty.
Only if he dresses like this.
Feel bad for the kid, burns are incredibly painful...

If he and Giants sign tender (tag) contract - is it guaranteed or can the Giants cut him and not lose $??

I am pretty sure that since the tender was not signed AND he suffered a non-football injury the Giants can't rescind the tender and be done with JPP. He'd be a free agent able to sign with anyone else.

they can rescind the tender no matter what for any reason before it's signed.

like "why would he risk it all over fireworks" or "why not hire a professional." Look, I'm assuming many of you don't live in states where you can buy fireworks and set them off legally. Every since I moved to Utah from New York I've been setting off fireworks. It's fun. I even do it drunk, sometimes very drunk. It's a simple process, you light and run.

If you moved to Utah, you're obviously an idiot :)
Could be worse, not so bad if you're in downtown Salt Lake :-) Where you located?
I retired last year and moved to AZ. But I was in Ogden for 17 years
