Latest from Adam Schefter on JPP

Giants officials in S. Florida today to visit JPP, see how he is faring, per sources. Team should have better idea of his condition today.
This seems reasonable
UberAlias : 7/7/2015 10:29 am : link
I see a lot of NYG fans calling for the team to cut bait, but one possible outcome, I would suspect, would be for this episode to swing leverage in favor of the team and bring JPPs demands down to a more reasonable level. Surely it has to help register the value of a long term contract in the eyes of his camp.

From what you may be hearing from your connections, is pulling the tender even on the table at this point?
Uber that's a good point and would be a pretty great scenario.
Eli's Got This Stuff : 7/7/2015 10:44 am : link
Sounds like we're finally getting closer to a real picture of what's going on.

Yes, I agree. Leverage now favors the NY Giants even if the injuries aren't as bad as some have noted. If he is limited in camp so be it but we still have the leverage advantage. If JPP has hit desperation mode as an adult NFL player, he may find the inspiration to change and focus on football more. That can only benefit us long term.

Personally, I'm hoping we sign him long-term but only if the long-term deal is favorable to the Giants in relation to his skillset. I think JPP is a top five run defender but maybe not even in the top dozen in terms of pass rush ability. I think he gets off the snap slower than most and hence he'll never have that "first step" burst to get to QB's that take those quick 3 step and fire drops like Brady, Manning and Rodgers often do.

Breathing In, Breathing Out, Praying for the Best here!
Pulling the tender is a strong arm move
JonC : 7/7/2015 10:54 am : link
Perhaps both sides can find a compromise, but even knowing this was entirely JPP's doing, I'd be surprised if NYG completely cut bait on him, it's not their style. They take care of their own, even if both sides figure he's on his way out after this season.

At this stage, let's wish the man a speedy recovery and hopefully he can return to the football field to earn a living.

Not hearing anything, but I don't know why you would pull the tender. You want JPP in Dallas or Philly?
I can't imagine
ThatLimerickGuy : 7/7/2015 10:56 am : link
that anything is off the table until the doctors go take a look at the medical records and JPP's Hand.

We still don't know if his hand is just really a bad burn or if there is legitimate nerve damage or strength reduction or anything else.
Remember, the whole league (and its agents) is watching
JonC : 7/7/2015 10:56 am : link
NYG can send a firm message that is both a reality check but lets the players know NYG will take care of its own, even when the player alone fooked up.

Get well, JPP.

And Yes Eric....
ThatLimerickGuy : 7/7/2015 11:00 am : link
I'd be perfectly fine if JPP took his immature me-first attitude to dallas or philly. Actually he'd probably fit right in there with those clowns.

Let someone else give him 12 million a year to half-ass it all year.

Stop and think about it for a minute. Look at the choices that this guy is making when money is ON THE TABLE to be grabbed.

Once you put it in his pocket who knows what this buffoon will do. I see lots of fat training camps and missed games due to back strains.

This is professional football, the key word being PROFESSIONAL. JPP will never get that.

Let him infect other teams with his cancer-ridden attitude all the while eating 1/10th of their yearly salary cap.

May not completely cut bait on him. It's not like he pulled a will hill or a plax. IMO, I think there will be a compromise with both and plays on his tender this year.
no reason at all to pull the tender even if he's going to be out
Stu11 : 7/7/2015 11:17 am : link
awhile. Let him sign it, you put him on the non-football injury list and you are not paying him any way. Why move on? we don't have better options than him any way. Players aren't fazed by this crap. All they are worried about is getting paid and playing football and what kind of teammate he is.

the Giants continue to get weaker this offseason and our division opponents stronger, and fans will be OK with that in October, November, and December?

Somehow I don't buy that.

Not sure if this guy is serious or just a goof. Me-first, cancer-ridden attitude because he was lighting fireworks during the 4th of July? Yeah, he should have been in the gym lifting weights or running 10 miles or something instead.
also regarding the tender
JonC : 7/7/2015 11:30 am : link
read up on the NFI list ... if JPP signs it, NYG can put him on it and not pay him while he's out of action.

I don't think JPP is making anyone stronger in 2015, and I don't think he'll be worth the cost in seasons beyond this.
If the Giants have any desire to compete this year,
Mike in ramapo college : 7/7/2015 11:53 am : link
they need JPP to take as many snaps as he did last year.

There is too much still unknown at this point for me to comment on whether they should pull the tender or not. I would only pull the tender if he would end up missing the first quarter of the season or more. Otherwise, the opportunity cost of saving some derivative of $14.8M is not worth it.
If he misses, the first quarter of the season,
Doomster : 7/7/2015 12:34 pm : link
then chances are, he might not be in top shape for another quarter of a season(how long did it take for him to get going last year?), and by then, the season(getting into the playoffs) could be over.....so do you pay him?

This might be an unpopular opinion, but on specific episodes alone, I don't think this is really all that different from Plax. It was a player injuring himself severely while taking an unnecessary (and illegal) risk, leaving the team in a bind.
this defense

is way better with JPP.

Getting rid of him now based 100% on emotional response - that's not how you make business decisions.

I'm dead serious.

JPP is a Buffoon and has repeatedly shown it. Throwing prince in an ice bath, stupid comments, and now a fireworks incident.

If I'm a coach I can't win with guys who don't put the team first and think that JV football camp antics are valid things for a PROFESSIONAL football player to do.

I quite frankly don't give 2 shits what any Giant does when he is not at the facility, so long as he doesn't get suspended or hurt himself.

I think the disconnect and why I'm beating this drum over and over is because if you take your Giants fandom out of the equation and look at JPP's play objectively, he's not Lawrence Taylor or even a Plaxico Burress whose play is superior enough that you overlook these things.

In essence, JPP is a lot closer to Will Hill than Plaxico Burress, and everyone other than the delusional Giants fans on here knows that already.

It's only the guys on here who remember the 2011 JPP who was barely gameplanned for as the 4th best DL and think that has been the consistency of his career. Wake up- it hasn't.

Let's go down the list of what are facts, NOT hypotheticals, not conjecture--- facts.

1) Video surfaced of JPP throwing a teammate into an ice bath. Both Dangerous and unprofessional at the same time. What if Prince hit his head on the ice tub? What if JPP slipped while throwing him in and both got hurt? Dumb

2) JPP Shows up to camp with the gut of a middle aged man, and has a shitty year marred by herniated discs and back surgery

3) JPP in 2014 has an injury scare laying on his back on the field at least 6 or 7 times during the year. He "guts it out" to come back in the game. Conditioning?

4) JPP thinks he is a top tier DE and doesn't show up to mandatory mini camp. That is his right he is not under contract.

5) JPP blows his hand up acting like a 10 year old on July 4th with a TRUCK full of fireworks the WEEK BEFORE he is scheduled to sign a tender for 12+ million dollars OR a long term deal worth north of 60 million dollars.

Does that sound like a guy who you want to give 12 million a year to? What the hell is going to happen next?

There is absolutely no rason to pull his franchise tender
Torrag : 7/7/2015 12:59 pm : link
We control his rights. His contract will get discounted for any time he misses. That's what the non football injury clauses are there for. To protect the team in a situation like this.

Sit tight and assess his recovery. Burn recovery times can vary widely from person to person. Even the doctors are guessing about his availability to participate in football activities.
I'm amazed at the JPP hate

this is nonsense mixed with hyperbole and snark. Turd cocktail.

I wouldn't say he sucks
Greg from LI : 7/7/2015 3:15 pm : link
I'd say he's going to be massively overpaid relative to his play on the field, which varies wildly from week to week.

Seriously. It makes no sense.

Absolutely no reason to cut bait with him. Losing JPP is a massive blow to this team.

Frankly, he isn't a rapist, murderer, wife beater, or drug dealer, so I really don't give a shit what kind of person he is as long as he helps the Giants win. Everyone saying to cut him because he's a "cancer" or something is so laughably off base.

Oh Jesus Terps get off of it! You make it sound like he is Chad Bratzke or something! He may not be a 60 million dollar player, but hes a damn good DE. Despite not having the sacks, there were games where JPP beasted his blockers and just didnt get to qb.

JPP on either of those teams would be very bad for us.
