While a decision on whether to place Pierre-Paul on the NFI list will depend on the ultimate condition of his hand after a full team evaluation; one team source said that placing him on the NFI list is already a strong consideration.
Pierre-Paul likely would have to sign his one-year, $14.8 million franchise tender before camp starts, which would allow the Giants to place him on the NFI list when camp opens. That money would not be guaranteed for what is clearly a non-football injury and he would not be paid while on that list.
If Pierre-Paul goes on the list and isnt activated before Week 1 of the regular season, he would have to remain on it through the first six weeks. After that, the team would have three weeks to either activate him or place him on injured reserve. He would not be taking up an active roster spot while on the list.
Pierre-Paul could also opt to not sign his franchise tender until hes ready to play, which would prevent the Giants from placing him on the NFI list since he would not be under contract. He wouldnt be paid either way until hes ready to play, so not signing would allow Pierre-Paul the power to dictate his return as long as the franchise tender remains on the table.
I can see this being a case where JPP says he is ready to play and the Giants don't think so.....if they think he is not ready, he doesn't get paid....so this will determine when he signs that tender....
That article is the opposite of sad. He had surgery, he's in the middle of a contract negotiation, his people very wisely are waiting for his health situation to be clear before engaging with the other party, and the Giants have lots of options on how to proceed. The doctor quoted says depending on the severity of thr injury he has a lot of things in his favor to recover.
I feel like some people on here want this to go bad for some reason.
don't forget to credit the source of what you copied/pasted, which is article from Hilary's link (accredited by her to Ralph V, but the article says by Justin Tasch). Eric's gotten in trouble before by this sort of thing.
90 % of BBI fretting is simply the 'need it now' mentality of the twitter age. we don't need it now, and we won't need it from a fan perspective until camp opens/ season starts.
what is concerning is the managing of the situation between JPP's camp and the Giants. maybe the Giants are in the know, but are under a tight directive to keep mum. or maybe they're being shut out of the loop, which is JPP's prerogative, but not really conducive to good relations.
We cut away all the dead tissue down to live tissue, usually fat, take skin from another part of body, close that area with an incision, and attach the skin to the area where youve removed dead tissue, said Greenhalgh. A firework burn to the palm you would possibly do a skin graft. The good thing for a palm burn is that its very thick skin, so it has a better chance of healing on its own than a thin part of the body, like an area on the back of a hand. An athlete who uses his hand a lot has got a thick callous, and will do better. It depends on how hot the agent (firework) was, how long he was in contact with it and how thick the skin is.
he had moments last year but nowhere near a franchise-tag worthy player as he was conspicuously absent during some key moments/games. this isn't a guy who has the burn to maximize his talent and has shown up to past training camps overweight which led to injuries. if this is how he behaves when he is a free agent and set for the biggest pay day of his life, how motivated/focused will he be when the bank account starts getting fat?
NFL.com is also now reporting that Pierre-Paul was likely to hold out of at least the early portion of training camp even before he was injured.
His ass needed to be at camp to learn the new defense. Especially since he needs all the help he can get at these things. He needed to sign his tender and be at camp on Day 1. Instead he goes out and proves the Giants correct on not over paying for him with a long term deal.
Now, he's going to miss all of the learning that he desperately needs and at least the first six weeks of the season. If we are lucky, he'll start to producing (assuming his hand is OK to start working out and to play football) by the last quarter of the year.
healing of the palm depends on how thick the palm skin is and how much callous. jpp stays active, from lifting, bball + just being a freakishly big mf in general, stands a better chance of healing. some good news is welcome
My reading of it is that in a sick way, this also might work out for the Giants too if he doesn't sign his tender.
Say JPP really isn't ready to return until Week 3. If he's on NFI List, he can't return until Week 7. But if he is unsigned, he can simply sign the tender before Week 3 and then return. Of course the problem at that point is he would not have practiced since last December.

This seems like better logic to me than the "maybe this will motivate him to grow up" people.
Start the rookie OWA and you can start camp with your starting players.
Betting on JPP's health, attitude, mental ability to learn a new system overnight, and his bad back is a bad bet and his on field performance does not really justify allot of upside to the bet especially after this serious injury.

Glad you said it first Eric, cause I was thinking the same thing.
Let's also assume that the injury is bad enough for him to miss time 3-8 weeks of the regular season, but not bad enough to affect his play for the remainder of his career. This scenario severely undercuts JPP's ability to max his on field performance in 2015 and puts him right back into the same situation he was in this past Feb/Mar. There is the possibility that he will not want to enter 2016 with the same financial uncertainty he has now and might want to sign a deal instead of playing on another 1-year tender.
I think, regardless of how this plays out, JPP has significantly hampered his leverage with the Giants and quite possibly any team not named the Cowboys. If he recovers fully (which indications are he should) I would not be surprised to see him sign with the Giants at or near the amount the franchise has already offered him.

What if JPP thinks he is ready, and the Giants don't? If not signed, he can't be practicing with the team, or even using their facilities(I think).....who determines when he is ready? What if he injures one of his hands when he comes back? Can the Giants force him to sign something in that regard?
Current situation:
Giants hoping to get in to see JPP today.
"Very strange" situation.
Giants sent Barnes and Armstead immediately, and they can't get in.
Unclear if its JPP's agent blocking them or if JPP is embarrassed and doesn't want to see anybody.
Giants completely in the dark about what happened.
Business aspect:
If JPP signs now, he gives all the options to the Giants.
Most likely will not sign until he's ready to practice.
It's in his best interest not to sign, Giants best scenario is to put him on the NFI list.
Chances of a long-term deal:
Ralph says none, because of deadline.
Too much uncertainty, maybe revisit options next off season.
Giants have concerns, hasn't been dominant since 2011, cites back surgery history.
What if JPP fails physical after signing tender:
Possible - still goes on NFI list.
Payment schedule very complex, subject to negotiations, backroom dealings, could be applied to next season, union could file grievance.
This will all be talked about in depth with lawyers.
Giants not interested in a fight, they want JPP back on the team and healthy.
What's next:
Giants need to get agreement from JPP's doctors to talk due to privacy agreements.
Giants need information to assess severity then plan forward accordingly.
Giants possible concerns:
Giants think he's a hard worker and a positive force in the lockerrom. Only worries are about back problems. JPP invited teammates to FL to train with him. Young man who just made a mistake.
[I did the best I could to transcribe. I missed might've missed some parts but i think I captured all the high points and overall gist of it.]
by advising silence he is not protecting JPP rather he is protecting his own cut of the action. A smart agent would realize JPP has little to gain from a monetary view by sharing right now. JPP however has plenty to lose in terms of relationship to the Giants org though. Let's hope for full disclosure soon.
that Kayne West, Reverend Al Sharpton and Spike Lee are among those who council JPP ....
Well he's already proven that his level of intelligence is greatly lacking. If this is true then that fact would be undeniable. Message to Ronnie and Jessie. You can come home now. Forget about your assignment.
My brother had severe burns on the bottom of his feet
And needed multiple skin grafts. This was five years ago and he is still dealing with occasional infections, hospital stays and procedures. Obviously hands and feet are different but this could be prolonged for JPP.
When you fail to understand why NYG has offered him $12M AAV
and why some of us would rather NYG stick to their guns on an extension, remember this : "Giants have concerns, hasn't been dominant since 2011, cites back surgery history."
It's not fans making shit up, it's NYG showing concerns over inconsistent performance from a player seeking elite compensation at a position that earns more money than any except QB. No matter the reason(s), JPP has not been the dominant version since 2011, and it's entirely possible he never will be. Cruz hasn't been the same player either, as a parallel, and Cruz signed the compromise deal.

haven't seen anyone arguing Giants should have offered more or should sign a long term deal now.
I think it's more about whether Giants should be patient and let this play out (which I agree no need to change status) or cut him now.
I get that people are disappointed, but he's clearly are best defensive player. DE like JPP are not easy to find. If they were, NYG wouldn't be offering a 60 mil. contract.
There many here that want him re-signed at any cost, they're thinking with their hearts.
Thanks Jon, I'm certainly not in that camp either. No matter what one does for a livelihood there is a wage scale (scale set by the Marketplace), where you place is based on how well you perform.
Where I take exception is the frequent chatter about he's not worth it (i.e. Beatty, Eli, Prince, etc.), as if these guys are so easy to replace. It's not like anyone here knows the market or is equipped to evaluate better than the coaches. We are all fans and have our opinions, but I just don't get the anger and hate.
I can see JPP's camp thinking greater than Quinn. But conversely understand NYG position in particular back issues. Imo, the tag was a good alternative. Show me better consistent play and I'll show you some more money or better guarantee.
Was looking forward to seeing JPP play in an aggressive scheme. Oh well, have to see how this turns out.
I'm already sick of this. All of the stupid ass comments and inane theories are just a giant waste of time and energy. He's hurt, we'll find out how badly soon enough, when he's ready to disclose it. All of you junior detectives and pitchfork wavers have lost your minds. He did something stupid, it's infuriating, I get that, but ffs, do we need 4 days of theories and speculation and whodunnit type ramblings? Fuck I hate the offseason.
They might not be easy to replace, but I think a majority tend to 1) overrate JPP a bit and 2) they want to believe the team can win now, and it's not their money so who cares, spend away.
In a cap league, teams must make the tough choices and JPP's back/antics/character/work ethic and whatever else are known to the team, and all taken into consideration in establishing a value for him with regards to an extension. Teams can't afford to make a shit decision on a franchise DE, it could damage the cap when you're talking about one player eating 10% of the space.

It's clear that the Giants made him a long-term offer (in the past), and that it didn't rise to the level JPP wanted.
It's also clear that the Giants are cautious about going above that level.
We have had reports by certain insiders here that suggest the Giants are concerned about character issues - such as consistent effort, immaturity, etc. What is being suggested (via BBI poster) by Ralph is that the Giants do NOT have these kinds of concerns with JPP. According to Ralph their concerns are based on the back, not on some perceived character flaws.
Of course given all the recent events one could expect the Giants' opinion of JPP to be evolving.
