with Landon Collins also on the roster, it is not a good sign that we also need to sign Miles
Competition doesn't hurt. Plus, Taylor can't stay healthy, Jackson just changed his position to S, who knows how he's progressing.
The competition is a good thing, plus we may carry more of these guys than you might initially expect. We're likely going to carry 9 or 10 DBs on the 53 man roster and having a guys who could play CB and Safety fill the 9th and/or 10th spots give some flexibility. Guys like Jackson and Thompson might fit that role well.
So figure you start y identifying your 3 best safeties and 4 best corners, to give you personel to run packages ranging from big nickel to dime. Then add one more CB and S as primary backups to protect against injury, brings you to 9. If neither Jackson or Thompson are in that top 9 they might be fighting for one last special teams/additional back up spot at both positions.
RE: RE: In a 6 year career, he has started 3 games.
has been pining for this guy since March, and then when we sign him, people bitch. Can't win.
Good signing - have to wonder if this has been in the works for a while as it has made a lot of sense from the beginning. I actually think we have pretty solid safety depth at this point with Collins, Miles, Berhe, Taylor, Thompson, Jackson, and maybe Gordy (if he plays safety). Creates some good competition.
Jeromy Miles has a ways to go before he matches Butler's career...

New York Giants
Butler saw action in 16 games during his rookie season in which he accumulated one start, plus the NFC Wild Card Game, tied for second on the team with 21 special teams tackles (19 solo). He recorded 18 tackles (14 solo), two interceptions, five passes defensed and one fumble recovery in play in dime packages. In 2006, Butler played in 14 regular season games with most of his action coming on special teams but he did see action in dime packages on defense and finished the season with 11 tackles (9 solo), 4 passes defensed and 12 special teams tackles. In Butler's third season (2007), the Giants defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. Butler led the Giants with ten total tackles in the game. In all Butler played in 13 regular season games with 12 starts and started all 4 postseason games at strong safety and finished with 69 tackles (38 solo), 1 interception, 6 passes defensed, and 1 fumble recovery. Butler, played in 15 games with a career-high 14 starts in 2008 and he had 76 tackles (45 solo) and three interceptions and six passes defensed.
St. Louis Rams
An unrestricted free agent in the 2009 offseason, Butler agreed to terms on a four-year $14 million contract, which could be worth almost $17 million if all incentives are met, with the St. Louis Rams on March 9.[1] Butler who was good all-around safety for the Giants was particularly noted for his run support, "Butler is far stronger against the run than the pass and will be used as an "in the box" safety" for the Rams.[2] The move reunited him with former Giants defensive coordinator and now former head coach of the Rams, Steve Spagnuolo.

It's simply a sign that the Giants saw the opportunity to add a veteran safety (probably for the vet minimum) who was previously coached by Spags to a group of young safeties with very little NFL experience.

yes but going into his first season as a starter what were his numbers? everyone starts with 0 starts, we shouldn't get too upset at the fact he had only 3 starts.
Graded him much higher then Ron Parker & Rahim Moore who everybody wanted. Only 5 free agent Safeties above him. He had a +5.4 grade for the season. They were McCourty, Hill, Tashaun Gipson, Dawan Landry & Da'Norris Searcy.
what happens if/when taylor gets hurt or if someone goes down in camp? there is little to no depth at the position. josh gordy? Bennett Jackson? Thompson and Currie (both of which may be destined more for the P/S than final roster).
While he wasn't DC, he was secondary coach - so he and Miles should have a sense of what is expected. Perhaps, familiarity is better term. Spags is familiar with Miles strengths/weaknesses. Miles was coached by Spags so he will be familiar with what Spags expects. Spags will undoubtedly incorporate things from the Ravens into what he does for NYG.
Not much out there anyway. And, you have players trying to transition into the position (Jackson) and others who are inexperienced and problems staying healthy.
but with a veteran, who DC is familiar with, reduces the anxiety factor a bit.
Look at what J. T. Thomas did for Jax. NOt a starter but came in and performed well "settled things down" - if Miles does that, great. If he does more it's greavy.

BTW is this KWALL's guy?
Since when are 5h round picks stone cold locks?
BTW is this KWALL's guy?
Ummmm, he is at least as good as James Butler
Insurance brother, relax. The more the merrier. Some of you guys kill me with this doomsday shit over everything.
Still a lack of talent and depth at the two spots.
Some of you guys love to bitch, but don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Says who?
I don't know enough about him, but his stat sheet and particularly # of starts show a markedly inferior player to Butler, quite frankly.

They don't need another DE.
I was going to post the same thing. I can't see getting excited over a guy with 3 career starts.

I'm pretty sure there was no expectation of exciting people with this signing. Just a minor but sensible move

I'd feel more comfortable with him starting alongside Collins. Can stay healthy and should be able to minimize mistakes.

I know he knows Spags, but how much of "Spags system" do you think the secondary coach ran?
Very funny. HAHA. Well said.

Seriously, he looks like a very good pickup. Somebody who can challenge for a roster spot, and maybe be a starter in the future. Excellent.
Love that guy. I remember him calling (way in advance) that the Giants would probably sign a little-known LB named Kawika Mitchell.
Not much out there anyway. And, you have players trying to transition into the position (Jackson) and others who are inexperienced and problems staying healthy.
We still need a FS. It's Landon Collins and a bunch of question marks
Did any vets show up to OTA? I'm not sure he'd have been there anyway.

Yes, that was a team OTA - Eli and company were all there...
