We did that partly because the LBs blew and were slow and awful in coverage. When Grant was playing the 3rd safety role, he was typically matching up with the TE, not a 3rd WR and that's why we added JT Thomas and to a lesser extent Casillas this offseason. They add much needed speed and coverage ability to the D.
Now obviously, if teams go 3-4 WR, we'll see the Giants in nickel D, but I don't see them going to the 3 safety look against "base" offenses (eg 21, 11, 12 personnel groupings).
that the same guys who bitch are not the same guys that support the moves.
I'm sure they do realize that. The point is that no matter what move JR makes, there is a % that loves it, and (seemingly) almost equal % that hates it. No-win situation...
JonC, you da man. I recalled someone knowledgable touting him. Hopefully he gets outperformed by the guys we drafted, but he could be valuable STs help and backup depth.
That would be a good thing.
A number of posters have been all over this guy for a long time...
...going back before the draft. I'm not at all surprised given the scary inexperience among our current group. Lots of potential and athletic ability but not a single proven commodity and no veteran leadership. If this gets done as expected it's a smart and solid signing.
input on us picking up Miles since he coached this guy in Baltimore and if he wasn't a decent player why would Spags even want him for his defense.....

One of the reasons some of us wanted him here when FA began
Isn't perfect, but they had him graded out as the 14th best Safety in the entire NFL. Had a positive grade in every game that he played 30+ snaps. Also had 5 special teams tackles & a blocked FG.
Says he outperformed Will Hill, Darian Stewart & 1st round pick Matt Elam. He's a true FS & probably the best fit to start next to Landon Collins. Jeromy Miles - ( New Window )
This kind of hopeful exuberance over a guy who will not make the opening day roster can only be exhibited on BBI !!! I love it.
Gotta love people who spout opinions about a player they know nothing about.
He's not going to make the roster? He will make it on special teams alone. He will compete with Taylor and Berhe for the starting slot. I would be shocked if those 3 are not all on the roster along with Collins.
You are making a complete fool of yourself. You are clueless.
Thanks for the kind words and remembering my post. Hopefully he is as positive an addition as we all hope.
And Jon C. - you remember correctly. I am an eternal optimist. The Y27 changed to Y28 after the Yankees won #27.
Hope to be changing my BBI handle to Y29 around November 1st !!!
but didn't we use three corners and three safeties a lot a couple of years ago? Can't remember if it was successful? If so, maybe that's the reason to stock up on guys like Miles.
And he has manged to stay in the NFL for five seasons, and played enough to accumulate 28 tackles last year for a good defense.
Sounds like a good depth signing.
Mike, why so negative?
Injuries can quckly decimate any unit, so why not have as much backup as the team can afford.
Also, maybe this is a clue to the kind of defense Spags plans to develop for the team.
We don't know until we know.
Interesting though and may be how they will help to deal with No JPP.

We will probably go with the 3 safety look more than the base 4-3. This is a good move.

with Landon Collins also on the roster, it is not a good sign that we also need to sign Miles

There is no alternative now.

Hungry and poorly paid compared to their peers is a recipe for good play. I've got high hopes for these guys.
Correct-- they didn't really start doing that very much until they had Deon Grant as the 3rd guy, beginning in 2010.

Let's hope he makes us forget about Will Hill.
That may be, but nothing wrong with having a player who's actually taken snaps & also knows the D.

More good news- I read he did ok in those games he started.

^ Some of us were saying this months ago.
But...but...he only started 3 games! He must suck right? :p

Good summer wishes to all
exactly, if Spags didn't think this guy could help we would never have signed him, just another experienced player at a position of need....
