Super Bowl XXI: Phil Simms to Phil McConkey

Eric from BBI : Admin : 7/18/2015 3:57 pm
This is when I knew we had the game in the bag. Still one of my most fond memories...
Perfect pitch back to Simms by Joe Morris

... Just another under-rated play by one the great under-rated Giants ever.
Imagine

THAT OL with this offense?
They'd have to add another digit space to the score board.
Parcells had a great knack

for pulling the very occasional trick play at just the right time.

Yup. Also had the fake punt early in the 3rd quarter (which didn't surprise anyone - Denver had lots of time to adjust. And the Reasons fake punt against San Francisco in the '90 Conference Title game was another great example.
Simms had an hour back there, he just waited for McConkey
PatersonPlank : 7/18/2015 5:09 pm : link
to get open. He could have ordered a pizza. Today Eli would have to throw it to the spot he thinks McConkey might get to before getting creamed.
Simms threw it to the wrong guy
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 7/18/2015 5:19 pm : link
Bobby Johnson was wide open - Criqui even mentions it ln the video. The play was executed so well that two guys couldve scored.
Everytime I see this play I can't help but think of Mark Haynes

(#36 for Denver). That had to be one hell of a day for him after having been such a key part of the Giants defense's success from 1981-1984.

Oh GOD ....

that 3rd quarter
bluepepper : 7/18/2015 6:45 pm : link
and first few minutes of the 4th was complete and total domination

Giant TD drive
Denver 3 and out
Giant FG Drive
Denver 3 and out
Giant TD Drive
Denver Int on 1st play
Giant TD Drive

Went from 9-10 at half to 33-10 early 4th. Denver had no idea what hit them. Maybe the most satisfying 15-20 minutes of Giants play in my lifetime. And this play is probably the most memorable moment. The one where like Eric said you knew the Giants were going to be SB champs.

Great observation. In the third quarter Denver had seven plays from scrimmage that netted a total of two yards!

All seven plays were passes. Elway was 2-6 for 13 yards and the seventh play was an 11 yard sack by Leonard Marshall.

Saw something on NFLN or ESPN about that play. Rutledge said he looked to sideline to see if Parcells still wanted to run it because the Broncos were so ready for it. Parcells just nodded. And Rutledge sneaked and got the yard but not by much. That's what made Parcells great. If we surprise them great, if not, we'll just block them and get the first down anyway.

We did get one break though. On one of those drives, Harry Carson hit a guy late. Should've been a flag. But ref didn't call it. Harry and LT both were a bit too riled up for this game. They each got PF flags on a play in 1st quarter which set up a Denver TD. 30 yards on one play, ball went from like the 35 to the 5.
Dan Reeves
arniefez : 7/18/2015 7:51 pm : link
was the head coach for a lot of playoff games that his team completely fell apart and was obliterated. That game was the first of many including the last game of LT & Phil's careers. Other Super Bowl's with the Broncos. Super Bowl with Atlanta. Reeves had quite an impressive head coaching record but take a look at the scores of his playoff loses.
my dad and I were there

The sack of Elway for a safety happened right in front of us...great day, greater memories.

Dude, I envy you.
Power sweep
MarvelousMike : 7/19/2015 10:00 am : link
watching Morris on the power sweep was a thing of beauty during that time. Teams may know its coming, but they couldn't stop it.
I was there too
PatersonPlank : 7/19/2015 10:02 am : link
Unfortunately I never made it in from the parking lot. Ended up drinking at tailgates and watching on a TV with my other 20 something friends. What a moron.
I was at that game too....
jsuds : 7/20/2015 9:39 am : link
I stayed at the Westin South Coast Plaza where the Giants stayed and mingled with them after the game.

I crossed paths in the elevator with McConkey and said to him "Phil, congratulations on your Super Bowl Touchdown"

He looked up at me (I am 5' 11") and replied "I wanted two."

What else would you expect from a guy labeled by the media as "an over-achiever"!
"Dad, our dream has come true."

Always brings tears to my eyes. It's what Giant fandom is like. Generation to generation.
