He was always going to get extended.
If anything, the extension will likely free up cap room unless go out of their way to take the cap hit this year.

Wishful thinking but if the cap space is there, why not? If we are gonna invest another buttload of cash in Eli, shouldn't we provide the best protection we can for him. He isn't a young guy anymore. I know I don't bounce back like I used to and I don't get hit by 300 pound guys for a living.

I think the plan is to form needed cohesion along the OL - signing Mathis prevents the team from putting Pugh at G, despite the short-term boost of Mathis's presence.
A RT like Long is more likely, IMO.
Why wouldn't Eli have earned that contract. He just turned 34. From what we've seen from NFL QBs, they are still effective into their late 30s, particularly now with the rules that protect the QB and promote the passing game.
Consider the current crop of QBs, who are still playing at a high level:
Tom Brady- Turns 38 this year (and he gets 4 games off to "rest")
Peyton Manning- Turned 39
Drew Brees- Turned 36
Tony Romo (yes, Romo)- Turned 35
So would everyone want to have an Andrew Luck turning 26? Sure, but those guys are pretty hard to find. Eli probably has a window of another 4-5 years of good football. And if all goes well in 2015, the roadwork has been laid to groom McAdoo as Coughlin's replacement. Even naming Spags as the defensive coordinator.
If you go back to the last time the Giants groomed a replacement, it was Ray Handley. Complete disaster. He wasn't ready (and likely would never have been). But one of his problems was that when Handley took over, he went from position coach, to offensive coordinator (the Giants demoted Ron Erhardt) and then to head coach all in one offseason..where he kept his OC duties in addition to HC. Along the way, they threw a QB controversy in his lap. And the Giants lost their 2 best defensive minds, with Parcells retirement and Belichick going to Cleveland, so they gave the DC job to an unproven coordinator in Al Groh.
Look at beyond 2015. If the Giants do well and decide it's time for TC to walk away. They have their QB locked up. They have their offense established under McAdoo's system, who will have 2 full years as coordinator under his belt, putting him in a better position to move up to head coach and bring in a coordinator to run his system. And on defense, which is not his background, you get a veteran defensive coordinator in Spags, who also used to be a head coach, so you know that he would be able to handle the responsibilities.
It's all speculation, but from an organizational stability standpoint, to get the most out of the remainder of Eli's career, everything is set up. The only thing that would mess it up would be a complete disaster of a season that would call for a house cleaning.

I would be all in on Mathis in a hot second, but it does seem like he will not come cheaply, and that's a decision I don't think the team is willing to make.
I think the majority of us are over JPP and his stupidity, its the fan that thinks he will be any sort of use in 2015 and beyond that keeps dredging it up ...
Jon, I know that we have talked about this in the past with other players (ie- Shockey before his trade), but in the next week or so we should get a sense for what the Giants are thinking related to JPP. The PR machine tends to get in motion before they make a move, particularly if it's to get rid of him. We've got the Eli news here. We also had Diehl's comments that JPP might struggle coming back. From what we've seen, in his early retirement and as a new broadcaster, Diehl seems very much to be a "company man" for the Giants. If we continue to hear other various stories that are a different discussion point, or more critical of JPP's ability to be effective anymore, you have to wonder if they are setting the stage to move on from him.
RE: the other poster who said there are not enough good players around Eli. The rebuilding is in full swing and there is a good deal of offensive talent and an exciting new offense.
Second, if anything I'd trade him and control where he went. Otherwise, he is kind of getting what he wants (missing finger notwithstanding). There needs to be some consequence for not signing the original tender and being somewhat uncooperative. It's about consequences not about being vindictive.
And, to be fair, he also said some positive things about JPP (being a good teammate, not being a distraction).
But, if he's worthless this season ... at some point you figure if they can't trade him and/or can't get him signed to a compromise if he's able to play some ... will the league will step in if NYG, for example, tried to simply keep him off the field for a length of time without cause, etc. If he can't play and you can't trade him, what options are left?
If not, I'd be shocked if they could not find a suitor. I would think some team would take a chance on having him for part of the season and having first crack at retaining him.
He will play again, IMO and I think at a high level. And, I think this painful, embarrassing incident will make him humbler and more importantly wiser.

At any rate, it's all opinions at this point. IMO, the smart bet is that he will come back and be a pretty good football player.
Not playing at all in 2015 is probably the 2nd best outcome behind being nearly 100% effective.
That way there is no cap hit and the the Giants get a do over next year and can re-franchise him for about the same amount of money and he will have had time to heal and adapt his game to the injury.
If he can play at all this season, NYG figures to have some leverage to get a reduced contract signed. Can only play 1/2 the season? Pay him half the tag value.

If this is your plan then they should just cut Eli today. Why waste the cap space and you could ensure a top 3 draft pick.

So basically, Giants brass hope that Eli will accept their terms before the start camp like they hoped JPP would accept them. And I hope to win the Lotto.

Not sure the Giants will do anything until he either signs the tender or let's their team physicians look at the hand. Cap space isn't an issue so my guess is they wait. He's going on the NFI.
