The intended O-line prior to the Beatty injury was LT Beatty, LG Pugh, C Richburg, RG Swartz, RT Flowers. My question is this. Would it not make more sense to plug Newhouse (or the best they can find) until Beatty returns to play LT? At least 4/5ths of the line would have 8 games playing together before Beatty resumes his job at LT. When Beatty returns, what can they do? Slide Flowers to RT? Sounds like more musical chairs disrupting any continuity.
If Flowers can't handle it, Pugh may be the guy who moves to LT in the short-term.
Plus, if Newhouse struggles, they can always try Mosley or Schwartz at RT.
Now if Flowers struggles...
They should be shopping for one right now. I wonder who they'll pick up after other teams discard their trash.
Will Flowers have some growing pains? No doubt, but he's smart, athletic, and tough as nails. He's their best option at LT with Beatty on the shelf, no matter what Kevin Gilbride says. (As an aside, does anyone else find Gilbride commenting on the Giants' new offense as funny as I do?)
In response to Klaatu, I don't find it funny that someone would ask Gilbride his opinions on our offense or that he would comment on it. He is a Superbowl winning OC and I value his thoughts as I'm sure many others do as well.
As for Gilbride, I wish AnishPatel could ask him a few questions about his offense vs. McAdoo's.
There was an ongoing discussion during the KG years that Eli in another offense would have much better stats. Well, he was put in another offense and 30-14 TD/INT and 63% completion percentage kind of validates that discussion.

by some reporters to be a bit comical too. I have to give him his due after 2 rings, but I was never a big fan of his. And I can't help thinking that Eli would be mangled by now from getting pummeled as KG continued calling the same deep ball offense with the Giants horrid OL.

Yep. Way too complicated, too pass happy when Eli was a pup. And the stupid part is that they didn't have to be. The running game was so good in 2005-2008 that they could have put up 200 yds on almost anybody. (yes I am aware that Hufnagel was OC in 2005 and 2006)
That said, Eli is set up to put up some nice numbers this year, if the OTs hold up. Throwing Flowers into the fire at LT isn't ideal, but it was probably the best of several unpalatable options.
He needs to stay on the field. That said, I hope your right.

I think having Pugh lined up next to Flowers will be a big help for him.
Don't know where the hate for Beatty comes from. He was more than serviceable, imo. All Pro? No but still.
last year, despite the growing pains of Richburg and the up and down play from Jerry at G, the C position is what killed the Giants on the OL. JD Walton was beaten off the snap repeatedly in both run and pass situations.
Richburg will change that
I still see Schwartz as the RT game 1

I hope you're right, Klaatu. As you know, I'm really concerned about a rookie LT protecting Eli's blindside. I have no worries about Flowers ability to run block. I'll just trust the coaches that they will know if he can get it done as a rookie. I suppose Pugh would be looked at/considered if Flowers isn't quite ready.
Shame about Beatty. He may not have been very good at run blocking but he did keep Eli clean. He may have been really pushing himself in the offseason when he tore that pec.
I didn't run to the podium to draft Flowers - the Giants did. Clearly, they loved the guy...more than Andrus Peat, and more than anyone else they could've drafted at #9. Right after the draft, Reese and Coughlin both said that Flowers had the ability to play LT, and when you factor in Will Beatty's age, salary, and injury history, it's not a stretch to figure that they saw Flowers as Beatty's heir apparent.
The decision to move Pugh to LG was made well before the draft and well before Beatty got hurt. Although Pugh was serviceable at RT, it seems to me that the Giants feel that he could be an outstanding LG...and outstanding beats serviceable any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Personally, I think Pugh could be another Marshal Yanda. I don't think the Giants ever seriously considered leaving him at RT or moving him to LT.
After Beatty got hurt, I'm not the one who had Flowers pulling double-duty at LT in the OTAs and mini-camp - the Giants made that call. Why? Well, it seems to me that they felt that putting him there was their best option, and getting him up to speed as quickly as possible was paramount. It's a bad situation, but the Giants are trying to make the best of it.
Who exactly is available that's better?
