O-Line Question..

Tark10 : 7/22/2015 8:20 am
The intended O-line prior to the Beatty injury was LT Beatty, LG Pugh, C Richburg, RG Swartz, RT Flowers. My question is this. Would it not make more sense to plug Newhouse (or the best they can find) until Beatty returns to play LT? At least 4/5ths of the line would have 8 games playing together before Beatty resumes his job at LT. When Beatty returns, what can they do? Slide Flowers to RT? Sounds like more musical chairs disrupting any continuity.
Yeah

Let's get Eli killed from the blindside so there will be minimal disruption when Beatty gets back
It's

a good question. My guess is that they always intended for Flowers to replace Beatty in 2016 but since Beatty is now gone half the year, they accelerated the schedule.

If Flowers can't handle it, Pugh may be the guy who moves to LT in the short-term.
The thought of

turnstile Newhouse playing LT gives me the willies.
I'm only saying..
Tark10 : 7/22/2015 8:40 am : link
If the coaches can trust Newhouse or someone else, it would be less disruptive for the rest of the line. If that isn't the case.. I understand why the line is set up the way it is..

You could be right, but I think the pec injury sealed Beatty's fate.

Plus, if Newhouse struggles, they can always try Mosley or Schwartz at RT.

Now if Flowers struggles...
Flower at LT and Pugh at LG

is as much about the future as it is about 2015. Flowers is going to have growing pains no matter where he plays. Beatty is most likely gone in 2016, unless he takes a pay cut. Giants will probably be shopping for a RT again next year.

They should be shopping for one right now. I wonder who they'll pick up after other teams discard their trash.
I think Moseley wins the right tackle job...

The Giants didn't draft Ereck Flowers 9th overall to play Right Tackle
Klaatu : 7/22/2015 8:58 am : link
Although that's where he probably would've started out this year. They ran to the podium at warp speed to draft him because they saw him as Will Beatty's eventual replacement. The only thing that's changed is their timetable for replacing Beatty, and it was obvious in the Spring that they realized that so they were working Flowers overtime to get him ready for that role.

Will Flowers have some growing pains? No doubt, but he's smart, athletic, and tough as nails. He's their best option at LT with Beatty on the shelf, no matter what Kevin Gilbride says. (As an aside, does anyone else find Gilbride commenting on the Giants' new offense as funny as I do?)

Eric from BBI : Admin : 7/22/2015 9:00 am : link
when Jumbo Elliott started with the Giants, he started off at RT then shifted to LT. He was somewhat of a liability in pass pro early on. It will probably the same for Flowers.
Newhouse? After seeing Charlie Brown last year?

nicky43 : 7/22/2015 9:09 am : link
I hope we are still shopping for o-line upgrades even if they are the discards of other teams. Gilbride's comments were right on the mark. If we can get this o-line fixed we will have a tremendous offense this year. The o-line issue is the key and even more so if it's true that the O will have to make up for the shortfalls of the D.

In response to Klaatu, I don't find it funny that someone would ask Gilbride his opinions on our offense or that he would comment on it. He is a Superbowl winning OC and I value his thoughts as I'm sure many others do as well.
Klaatu, I find KGs sudden elevation to resident Giants expert

by some reporters to be a bit comical too. I have to give him his due after 2 rings, but I was never a big fan of his. And I can't help thinking that Eli would be mangled by now from getting pummeled as KG continued calling the same deep ball offense with the Giants horrid OL.
If the Giants were so inclined...
Klaatu : 7/22/2015 9:21 am : link
They could sign Gabe Carimi or Anthony Collins right now. Obviously, they're going into camp with Flowers as the presumptive starter at LT, and with Newhouse as Mosley as the two most likely to start at RT. They also have several young O-Linemen on the roster who will be given a chance to show their mettle. I say let the kids battle it out.

As for Gilbride, I wish AnishPatel could ask him a few questions about his offense vs. McAdoo's.

There was an ongoing discussion during the KG years that Eli in another offense would have much better stats. Well, he was put in another offense and 30-14 TD/INT and 63% completion percentage kind of validates that discussion.
Have a good day fellas...

Yep. Way too complicated, too pass happy when Eli was a pup. And the stupid part is that they didn't have to be. The running game was so good in 2005-2008 that they could have put up 200 yds on almost anybody. (yes I am aware that Hufnagel was OC in 2005 and 2006)
I don't think Beatty is going back to LT (unless Flowers is a complete

bomb). Flowers was teh heir apparent all along, this just accelerates it. So in my view (and with my theory in the Giants view too) the line is 4/5 intact. Flowers-Pugh-Richburg-Schwartz-TBD. TBD = Mosley or Newhouse, and when/if Beatty returns then Beatty.
Eli's stats in 2014...
Big Blue Blogger : 7/22/2015 9:53 am : link
...were not dramatically different from his stats in 2008-2012. So far, the 25 INTs in 2010 are the only thing that really sets the McAdoo Eli apart, statistically speaking, from prime Gilbride Eli. Otherwise, it comes down to one or two extra completions every hundred attempts, in exchange for slightly less yardage on each completion. (Obviously, 2013 was a different story: the whole offense was horrible, Eli was horrible, and a dramatic change was needed.)

That said, Eli is set up to put up some nice numbers this year, if the OTs hold up. Throwing Flowers into the fire at LT isn't ideal, but it was probably the best of several unpalatable options.

The new passing game calls on much more short passing, plus
No Where Man : 7/22/2015 9:53 am : link
I'm sure Flowers will get help early on in the season, (TE/RB). Beatty will be gone after this year. Flowers should help in the running game. That alone will help Eli significantly.

I think having Pugh lined up next to Flowers will be a big help for him.

Don't know where the hate for Beatty comes from. He was more than serviceable, imo. All Pro? No but still.
OC2.0: Headhunter wasn't hating on Beatty.

He was hating on Newhouse. Check the context.
OL
stretch234 : 7/22/2015 11:55 am : link
The biggest, most important position change on the OL is having Richburg play C.

last year, despite the growing pains of Richburg and the up and down play from Jerry at G, the C position is what killed the Giants on the OL. JD Walton was beaten off the snap repeatedly in both run and pass situations.

Richburg will change that

I still see Schwartz as the RT game 1

I hope you're right, Klaatu. As you know, I'm really concerned about a rookie LT protecting Eli's blindside. I have no worries about Flowers ability to run block. I'll just trust the coaches that they will know if he can get it done as a rookie. I suppose Pugh would be looked at/considered if Flowers isn't quite ready.

Shame about Beatty. He may not have been very good at run blocking but he did keep Eli clean. He may have been really pushing himself in the offseason when he tore that pec.
mrvax, it's not about me being right.
Klaatu : 7/22/2015 4:02 pm : link
It's about the Giants being right in their overall assessment of Flowers, as well as in the moves they've made (or haven't made) in the wake of Beatty's injury.

I didn't run to the podium to draft Flowers - the Giants did. Clearly, they loved the guy...more than Andrus Peat, and more than anyone else they could've drafted at #9. Right after the draft, Reese and Coughlin both said that Flowers had the ability to play LT, and when you factor in Will Beatty's age, salary, and injury history, it's not a stretch to figure that they saw Flowers as Beatty's heir apparent.

The decision to move Pugh to LG was made well before the draft and well before Beatty got hurt. Although Pugh was serviceable at RT, it seems to me that the Giants feel that he could be an outstanding LG...and outstanding beats serviceable any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Personally, I think Pugh could be another Marshal Yanda. I don't think the Giants ever seriously considered leaving him at RT or moving him to LT.

After Beatty got hurt, I'm not the one who had Flowers pulling double-duty at LT in the OTAs and mini-camp - the Giants made that call. Why? Well, it seems to me that they felt that putting him there was their best option, and getting him up to speed as quickly as possible was paramount. It's a bad situation, but the Giants are trying to make the best of it.
The best they can find

will be Flowers or Pugh (worst case). This is precisely why they drafted Flowers, let's not underrate or overlook the rookie. It's his job to loose, WB's fate's been sealed.

Who exactly is available that's better?
Everything they're trying to do now

is to set the entire OL except for RT, that's where a change might occur if the OL struggles.
