NFT: Asus laptops / Best Buy "black friday in July"

knicks3031 : 7/24/2015 8:22 am
Does anyone have any experience with Asus laptops or the Transformer Book? They are on sale right now during Best Buy's July black friday event and I was considering buying the Transformer Book for $179.99.

I only need the laptop for day to day stuff and when I travel for work. I know many on the previous laptop thread suggested the Macbook, but I don't need to spend $1,800 on a computer as all I need on a daily basis is Microsoft Office and occasionally streaming netflix when away on business.

If anyone has any other suggestions for a budget laptop, any insight would be great.

Thanks!

that is when I first heard and saw Asus.. never heard of them before.. they are a company that just recently got into the laptop game. They used to be a manufacturer of chips for high performing gaming pc's.. At least that I was told.. I went with a Toshiba, since my last Toshiba lasted me 5 years.. I got $100 off at Staples, %50 off the two year warranty and 2-$50 rebate cards out of the deal.. Also got Office for $20 off and a free upgrade to Windows 10 when it comes out. I think I did ok..
Asus netbook

I bought the asus netbook last December for $120 from the windows website. It's a great little machine for surfing the internet and doing minor laptop things etc. It's not a powerful machine to edit photos etc but it all depends on what you're looking for.

In my opinion, Asus has made their product a lot better and give you decent bang for the buck. Haven't looked in the specs for this specific model but I don't think you can go wrong for $180 but again it all depends on what you want to do with a laptop. These laptops are light weight and thin so you can travel with them with ease. And the battery life is awesome especially with new windows 8.1
Thanks guys

Yea I don't need any photo editing software. Just need Excel and powerpoint for the most part, in addition to daily internet browsing.
Asus makes good equipment

But understand what you're buying with this particular device. It's not a laptop: it's a tablet with a keyboard. It's a small screen with a cramped weak keyboard. It has a weak processor. And it only has 32GB of storage space for your programs and data.

Thanks Jim. Is there another product you would recommend that may be a little more powerful? I don't mind spending more money on a superior product, I just can't justify spending a ton of money on what I need the laptop for.
I just bought this laptop

Asus and Laptops

Don't get me wrong, Asus makes wonderful motherboards, some rather good, under-rated tablets, and yes, I even have an Asus Zen phone, which unlocked cost me less than $200 and is not far off in quality from my old Samsung Galaxy. But I would stay away from their laptops for the same reason I stay away from the Sony Vaio models (and trust me, I run an IT department, so I deal with a lot of laptops): The solder joints where the power jack connects to the motherboard have a nasty habit of breaking. The symptom: you're laptop will begin to stop charging until you jiggle the power adapter. Shortly thereafter it will stop charging altogether.
