He was only nominated for an Oscar once, and that was a year ago. No way will he or this movie get any sort of attention from the academy. Maybe something for best soundtrack for the movie, Eminem produced it or most of it.

I REALLY liked Zodiac. One of those movies that keeps you up thinking late at night and reading up on the actual story and current take. I would HIGHLY recommend it. It's on Netflix streaming.
I have been a fan since watching him in October Sky Â
i get he is a great actor but it gets annoying when movie actors
only do showy oscar bait roles
naomi watts does it too
she is only in movies that she will get a shot at oscar nomination
it is like they are trying to hard
He did that terrible Prince of Persia movie that had no chance of winning him an oscar. He supposedly pushed to play Batman twice as well but lost out to Bale and somehow Afleck.
He was also very good in Brothers, an American adaptation of Danish film. Co-stars with Tobey Maguire. Very good, often overlooked movie. Also really liked him in Rendition and Prisoners too. All worth checking out.
I liked Zodiac a great deal as a movie. Just be aware that the source of the theories in the film, Gyllenhaal's character Robert Graysmith, is pretty much completely full of shit. There are a whole, whole lot of utter falsehoods and fabrications.
Very strange to jump on him as an actor, he's one of the very best working and has been virtually flawless in the roles he's picked. I've never once thought I wished an actor picked shittier roles.
Greg. The whole dynamic exchange between each of the 3 characters was enthralling. Great work by each actor. Robert Downey Jr doing his one-liners keep me laughing at many junctures of the film "Does it bother you that people call you retard"?

FWIW, I haven't seen the US version, but the original film was very good. And Gyllenhaal really resembles the actor who originated that role - I remember thinking that they'd go after him for an american remake.

The Oscar comment doesn't even make sense, films don't generate Oscar buzz before a cast and production team is assembled and plenty of characters look great on paper but dont pan out. You're basically ripping on th guy for being selective about the characters he plays and making good career choices. Just goes to show you can't please everyone.

Daniel Day Lewis is widely considered one of the best actors in the business. One of the reasons is because he is very picky about which movies he will star in. His goal is to make great movies, not to get nominated for Oscars. But I wish more actors would only choose to do great movies. Forrest Whitaker is a fantastic actor, but he accepts 8 awful roles for every great role. I respect Lewis' method more.
Also, is Jake Gyllenhaal nominated for Oscar awards constantly? I don't think so. Outside of 1 or 2 roles, I can't think of any nominations. Not sure if you are thinking of somebody else.
who in my mind went from one of the all time greats to almost a whore by taking the money to make some of the worst dreck doesn't befall Gyllenhall and Coopet
that this is going to be taken the wrong way, but...
I think he's a tad over rated. He's a very good actor. very good. let me repeat it, very good. but the more movies I see him in, I usually end up saying, good movie, but I knew it was Jake Gyllenhaal playing the role. the best actors are the ones you say, holy shit that was Jake Gyllenhaal? It may be a bit unfair, because he has a very distinctive face/charisma, and it's hard to change that up so that you forget who you're watching.
Still, it's wrong to discredit him for taking good roles. He's at his peak. give him a couple years when some other hot young stud passes him by. he'll start doing more indy type movies in part time roles, stretching. and you'll realize he is a good actor.

How is this a fair criticism of any actor? Basically you are saying that because you were aware of who the guy is before going into the film it some how detracts from his performance?
The thing that makes him a good actor is that he can play different roles and although you know it's Jake Gyllenhaal and looks like Jake Gyllenhaal, the personality portrayed in the film isn't that of Jake Gyllenhaal. Look at his roles in Nightcrawler, End of Watch, and Love + Other Drugs. His character, and how he played them, was totally different in every movie and it was completely believeable in each instance.
Now compare that to a guy like Mark Wahlberg, who I think is one of the worst "big name" actors around. Whether he is playing a boxer in The Fighter, a stoner in Ted, or a degenerate in The Gambler, he plays the same character. He doesn't even act, he just turns ever role he chooses into Mark Wahlberg.
Does the same go for Jack Nicholson in the Shining, Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, Edward Norton in American History X? It doesn't have to be a Heath Ledger performance for an actor to be playing a prominent role

Lopes well said. I was just thinking this about Ed Norton watching Rounders (Malkovich too tho I haven't seen a ton of his stuff, same with JG). He's a similar deceptive con artist type in The Italian Job (not a fav of mine but still), 3 different characters in American History X, plenty funny in Death to Smoochie, while adding movies like Red Dragon & Bourne 4
In the mean time Keanu Reeves is my Wahlberg. Id even say I like both their movies on avg, but KR is Cali Surfer every time, from Bill & Ted to Point Break to the Matrix to the Devil's Advocate, and I think he says 'whoa' in every one (consistently his best delivered line in ea and a catch phrase he shares with Joey Lawrence)
not overrated, not underrated. He's got a natural weirdness about him. Nightcrawler was a great movie but I don't think Gylenhaal's performance was as amazing as others do, he just did an exaggerated aloof version of himself. I liked him in that movie though, don't think there's an actor out there who could've done that role in the same way. I've also liked some of his other stuff. Source Code was a really good movie imo.
my points Gyllenhaal comes off as trying to hard - the movies he performs in always seem to become about his performance rather than the movie itself.
the fact that he has done a whole list of "great " performances but has not gotten another oscar nomination since brokeback mountain shows that I am not the only one that thinks this.
isn't a good defense. Tons of people have opinions about any and everything. There's likely people out there that loathe DDL and the roles he does. To each their own.
Nightcrawler was a top 5 movie for me last year. I enjoyed his performance and the movie itself. Same with Prisoners.

I don't underrate him, I don't rate him at all. Don't even know who he is really.

So you'd rather they take bad scripts?
Gyllenhaal is a fantastic actor.

He got to work with the great Lester Green in this film.
