Hard to believe JPP won't agree on a negotiated FT but he's been making bad choices and that may continue. I think if he waits until say week 4 and then arrives "healthy" but unready to play the Giants may have no choice but to release him.
I may be in the minority but I think the DL talent is good enough even without JPP. I think the DT are going to be an excellent group with Hankins and Ellis leading the way with Jenkins and Bromley providing a good rotation and depth. At DE guys like Wynn and Ayers, along with vets like Selvie and situational players like Moore and OO can make an effective rotation.
I highest on Landon Collins who, I think, will be an very good safety very soon and there is enough talent there to find him a solid running mate. The LBs are the best we've had in a long time especially Kennard and I think Thomas will effective playing the Will where he belongs.
The OTs are the complete unknown and there isn't enough information to even guess at what will happen. I like the OL interior a lot though. Pugh, Richburg and Schwartz are a very solid group, if not better than that. The offensive skill positions are talented and deep. Lead by Manning they should be a force.
are the basic lynchpins of a team: OL and DL
OL has huge, huge questions. It's a complete reshuffle, the two tackles will likely be completely new and possibly raw at actual NFL experience. As currently penciled in (Flowers, Pugh, last years rookie, Schwartz, Newhouse) I think only Schwartz put in a snap at the position last year, maybe not (drawing a blank as to whether he ever lined up at right guard)
DL: with JPP situation, both End positions are completely unknown.
The rest of the team has some ? here and there, but the major worrisome ones are the two lines, with a shout out to the safety position. whether Williams steps up or suffers a sophomore slump is pretty low on my worries this year.
I really appreciate all the work everyone at BBI has been doing recently. Lots of good content.
Eric - are you more fired up then usual before training camp?
It seems like the last few weeks you are constantly pumping out good stuff. Maybe I'm just more fired up. I do partially dread the preseason though as I feel like I'm just waiting for someone to get injured.
Glad camp is starting. I am looking forward to reading, hearing about the progress made by the Safeties, Flowers and whoever the RT is, and Cruz of course.
I am excited about Andre Williams. I expect big things from him if the OL does its job. Vereen a big plus.
the start of the previous two seasons.....I think there are even more this season....for this team to be successful, further major injuries have to be avoided, offensive and defensive concepts have to be executed quickly, mistakes have to be minimized, and those that are really counted on, have to come though.....
This can very easily be a boom or bust season.....
A big reason for the failures of the Coughlin era has been ill-timed injuries to key players - and the last 2 seasons in particular, overall team health has killed this team.
And we're off to the races again, losing the 2 most important trench players on the team to injury/explodeys.
Yes, it's important that guys like Cruz, Prince, Beason stay healthy, but it's just as important that the Giants don't lose HALF the team to injury as they did last season.
After a point, you have to believe that the problem is institutional or cultural. Last year was just bizarre.
Losing half the team to injury makes me lose interest. 1986 - I can think of ONE major injury all season. Terry Kinard. That was it! What has changed?
only hope is Eli Manning and the skill players on the offensive side of the ball having big years. There isnt enough talent on either line and there isnt enough talent on the defensive side of the ball in general to expect anything other than another spotty defense.
It's really up to Eli and the offense. This team isnt talented outside of him and the skill players.
Terry Kinard (as I recall( was lanky, thin, look at the musculature on Collins.
Watch the Larry Bird era and look at the almost embarassing thinness of the player. comare that to the bunched up muscles of the current player.
Faster stronger, more tightly wound produces more injuries.
After that it's just rolling the dice and random, TC has tried everything under the sun and last year, one of our worst, he used GPS's and a computer that called "work stoppages" and imposed water breaks.
Last year we lost Hill and Wilson before the season began. This year Beatty and JPP...nothnig you can do about pot, spinal stenosis, firecrackers and bench pressing.
I really appreciate all the work everyone at BBI has been doing recently. Lots of good content.

I think arrow is pointed up on this team. The JPP situation could screw things up however. What concerns me is we can't get off to a slow start with so many division games early.
But isn't clear by now that JPP will not be part of the Giants this year -- and maybe never again? He's a story of his own, but no longer part of the Giants' story.
Seriously. Forget the damage to the hand - the primary issue is going the be the fact that he CANNOT LIFT. Every day that goes by without him fully working out and weight training his upper body is a day that he loses strength.
I'm trying to imagine how much weight and pressure are put on JPP's right hand when he lifts. Forget about the bones, muscles, cartilage healing - the skin graft is every bit as important.
I would add that despite the uncertainties at DE one thing to consider in Spags' system is the fact that he also utilized CB blitzes effectively. I'm hoping/praying for a return under Spags where the blitzes actually get home. TT was especially good at putting heat on the QB when he blitzed.
We do really need a lot to fall in to line for this to be a good year, but hope springs eternal! I am confident that the offense will build off of last year's success, but the D is filled with a bunch of ??s
let's not forget the addition of ereck flowers here. from his college tape this guy is a road grader. we have not had an offensive lineman like this maybe ever
question can they be not of devastating and can they overcome them. It'll depend upon what position group this time gets hit hard. If they can overcome that, then they can be there towards the end.
question can they be not of devastating and can they overcome them. It'll depend upon what position group this time gets hit hard. If they can overcome that, then they can be there towards the end.
Injuries will happen, probably often with this bunch. But, it seems like a 2 week injury for this team lasts 6-10 weeks.

Does this oline have the ability to protect our aging but still great qb? And health of that oline is at the forefront. We already have one injured member in Beatty. We lose another vet for a long stretch and we are in serious trouble.
. And very surprising that the Eli-lead Giants missed the playoffs more than they made it.
Also, I personally don't consider JPP as much of a key question. I fully expect him not to play this year, and even if he does I don't expect him to have any meaningful impact.
Typical BBI "fact" totally unsupported by information. One doctor said amputation wouldn't prevent him from lifting the day he got home from the hospital. That probably ignores the broken thumb, but there are tons of weight machines that can be used with your thumb in a cast. Just because the Giants use free weights doesn't mean JPP has to. And no, if he shows up hurt in week 4 we don't have to cut him, we place him on NFI list. It costs us 0.
And Eric, JPP needs camop to pick up Spagnola's offense?
You might want to revisit Michael Strahan's holdout in 2007. Missing all of camp didn't prevent him from going to the Pro Bowl. Defensive linemen don't need to understand schemes to rush the passer.
Typical BBI "fact" totally unsupported by information.
I said it.
I need 'information' to know that it's virtually impossible to do a full range of upper-body weightlifting activities with a fooked-up hand?
Hey Willie - deadlift the max weight that you can. Bench Press. Now explain how you do it with a hand that has been reconstructed a few months ago, not to mention the graft. From what I've read, the graft is going to give him more long-term issues than the structural stuff.
These guys have to do an INSANE amount of lifting to perform at an NFL level. Look at Snee - the minute he retired, he dropped 50 lbs, because he no longer had to eat and workout like a thoroughbred.
Long stretches without lifting for someone like JPP is a killer to productivity.
Feel free to copy my posts and ridicule me if I'm wrong later in the season. FWIW, I'll be THRILLED to have exactly that happen. I just don't see it happening.
Old Dirty Beckham calling me retarded is the biggest
X meadowlander: I don't know if you work out, but you can do an enormous variety of exercises on modern weight machines without ever touching the machines with your hands.

1st, it is to early to pencil Flowers in as the starting LOT. The obvious option is to move him to ROT and move Pugh to LOT. I am curious to see how Bamiro does at either LOT or ROT, I gather he has impressed coaches both at LOT and LOG so far. His natural position is ROT. Also, this is Mosely's last stand, lets hope he steps up along with Herman.
I would expect Jerry to hang as the last OL back-up player but nothing more.
Hard to believe JPP won't agree on a negotiated FT but he's been making bad choices and that may continue. I think if he waits until say week 4 and then arrives "healthy" but unready to play the Giants may have no choice but to release him.

If JPP isn't in camp & healthy / practice ready by the final cutdown you have to let him go and use that money to sign the players you want to retain beyond 2015: Prince, Eli, Ellis, Ayers, Randle, Robinson aree but a few who may take deals. I mean, no way you pay JPP $15 million if he is a no show and can't go early.
... I'm still not sold on Larry Donnell as being the answer at tight end. I think characterizing him as a "Top 10 receiving tight end" is a bit of a stretch...
Sure he made a few pretty remarkable catches, but of his 63 catches and 6 TDs, 25 receptions and 4 TDs came in the first four weeks. Once the secret came out regarding his production was pretty pedestrian the rest of the year and his run blocking was atrocious.
Now he has the Achilles tendonitis issue that caused him to miss OTAs and could linger into camp.
Hope we have a contingency plan in place here. Wish we had another fall back besides Daniel Fells. Hard to believe Adrien Robinson can't break through and make a contribution
is a good fit for the personell that in itself will be one of the biggest differences. Under Coughlin we have had years of bad system fits on defense and an ok but not necessarily great offensive structure. The coaching staff was about as closed minded as it gets regarding forcing players to adapt to system versus the adapting the system to the players.
MacAdoos system is bringing this into light and could further shed proof by the improved results this year.
This could be one of the few years where we have a system that is 'player friendly' on both sides of the ball.
With a little health I think this team could suprise with a deep playoff run.

4 pretty costly fumbles too
I'm a big fan of Donnell. I also think Cunningham is going to have a big impact.
First, you have to cut JPP if he doesn't reduce his deal and come to camp on time to learn the playbook. If he is in camp at least he is around the guys, watching things, learning. He can run a bit and so forth. If he doesn't do that and is unwilling to change his tag figure you bid him a good-bye slap in the ass and move on. He'll be a distraction all camp long and isn't worth it.
Second, if you see Flowers isn't ready by the time game 1 of pre-season finishes you move him to RT immediately and move Pugh to LT. I think we'll end up with a veteran OL of
Pugh-Schwarz-Richburg-Jerry-Flowers with a TE helping Flowers a lot, Pugh some as well.
On the DL, you have to hope for health and solid rotation of guys to work out with JPP gone. And if JPP isn't gone how effective will he be? What a shame.
Two off-seasons in a row we've been crushed with injuries (Beatty, JPP) and it will hurt.
I am praying for 9-7 because I think our wideouts, TE's, RB's and QB will all be outstanding and we'll also run the ball well. We'll utilize a short passing game to compensate for our poor OT's pass blocking.
On defense, I think our run defense will be middle of the pack as will be our pass defense. The safeties will improve but expect Dallas and WR Bryant (assuming he plays / signs) to exploit us a lot early.
Dallas 11-5
Giants 10-6
Eagles 9-7
Redskins 6-10
Tough division, Dallas will finish strong with Hardy coming back game 4 and McClain too.
Our specials will be strong lets hope we get two wins and 10-6 for final wildcard.
There's a lot to be excited about, with or without JPP.
I wasn't in the "Landon Collins at #9!!!" crew, but love him where the git him. Not enough talk about him.
Team is young and hungry, along with friendly systems on both sides of the ball. OC/DC systems were a part of the problem, along with bad decisions in draft and crushing injuries.
I didn't expect JPP to show up for camp. I figured he'd sign his tender sometime around the third preseason game. Now, I don't care if he ever shows up. I didn't expect him to be a Giant after this season anyway.

I'm a big fan of Donnell. I also think Cunningham is going to have a big impact.
Our TE's will be Donnell, Robinson and Cunningham. Fells will be a final cut and told to stay in shape. I personally think Robinson finally steps up this year. I'm not saying Robinson will have an 80-900-7 type season but he will be a threat and improved.
Cunningham could surprise as well as he has some speed. Look, who'd have thunk Donnell would have accomplished what he did last year. Is it a stretch to think all 3 of these guys could improve a lot and change the tenor of our team?
Hard to believe JPP won't agree on a negotiated FT but he's been making bad choices and that may continue. I think if he waits until say week 4 and then arrives "healthy" but unready to play the Giants may have no choice but to release him.
That may be his strategy. Then he'll sign with someone who will declare him "healthy" and be on the field by week 6.
I am genuinely excited about this team even with the JPP issue
This team isn't as talented as some of its predecessors but we have some pretty strong pieces at key impact positions.
as mentioned above, the most important thing I see is the fact that we could have systems on both sides of the ball that really fit our players well.
This will also help with the development of the young players and/or FA's giving them an opportunity to come into their own and make positive contributions quicker. Guys like Kennard,Moore and FAs like Selvie and Vareen (and we saw it with Odell last year under the first year of MacAdoo).
With some health and emergence of some of these guys this team will be deceptively strong.
I think it will be tough to rely on Eli and a second year system to carry the team. I expect some bumps along the way this year as they take another step in this system.
I think the defense will need to carry it's own weight and contribute. If they can't and if the offense still takes sometime to get going, I can see a losing season. In fact, I am guessing a 7-9 or 8-8 season.

Giants won pretty quick with a sound defensive system under Spags in the first go around in '07 and this offense looks much more 'player friendly' than the last.
I would think Eli with a year under his belt and our best offensive weapon in Beckham a year older Giants O should be pretty explosive with some health thrown in.

We were close to the edge of falling off if I recall. We got owned he first two games of the season giving up like 80 points to Dallas and the Packers. We were about to blow a touchdown lead against the redskins, BUT the goal line stand helped get the defense turned around and we won the game.
We have lesser talent now than we do then on defense. So not sure how this will work.
As for the offense, it depends on the OL. We didn't install everything due to the OL. So that's why I looked forward to year 2 with a better OL, prior to Beatty getting hurt, and seeing what new passing and running concepts Ben M. would add.
It's up to the OL. I am also curious to see how others do from Rbs, TEs, and WRs. It's still a question mark this offense.

...really informative summary and insights as the 2015 Giants open training camp.
The only surprise is that I didn't read (unless I simply missed it) any explicit mention about the pathetic run game over the past couple of years.
That has been such a negative vibe that has spread through the entire locker room and performance on the field (both sides of the ball)!
It's really up to Eli and the offense. This team isnt talented outside of him and the skill players.

The arrow is up.

I'm a big fan of Donnell. I also think Cunningham is going to have a big impact. [/quote]
- Eric - Even assuming he's good pass catcher, his blocking was a huge reason the Giants couldn't run the ball. He was pretty bad.
And David Wilson got dog-housed for having less fumbles than Donnell.
If he's healthy he at least deserves a shot to show that he's improved...unless somebody steps up (I'm looking at you Adrien Robinson).

4 pretty costly fumbles too

Cunningham could surprise as well as he has some speed. Look, who'd have thunk Donnell would have accomplished what he did last year. Is it a stretch to think all 3 of these guys could improve a lot and change the tenor of our team?
That may be his strategy. Then he'll sign with someone who will declare him "healthy" and be on the field by week 6.
as mentioned above, the most important thing I see is the fact that we could have systems on both sides of the ball that really fit our players well.
If Newhouse bombs the OL can be reshuffled without a total disaster, imo.

I think it will be tough to rely on Eli and a second year system to carry the team. I expect some bumps along the way this year as they take another step in this system.
