NGT: Why Kelly traded for Bradford

jcp56 : 7/27/2015 3:41 pm
Kelly correctly believes are only two ways to get a franchise quarterback: draft one, or acquire one when he's coming off of an injury and his stock is low.

"We looked at everything, and we knew we weren’t going to pick No. 1 or No. 2. So, and I’ve said it before, if you’re not going to pick one or two, how do you go get a quarterback?" Kelly said. "Peyton Manning switched teams because of an injury. Drew Brees switched teams because of an injury. So we went down that path."

Kelly believes Bradford can have similar success now in a new environment.

Kelly isn't too concerned with Bradford being skittish after injury. "That’s happened, but I’ve also seen quarterbacks like Drew Brees come back with 25 staples in his shoulder and everybody said he would never play again," Kelly said. "You don’t know. But that’s a risk we were willing to take. You know it’s a risk, but it was a risk we were willing to take."

I hope Kelly's wrong, but you can't fault his approach.
He had a QB good enough to win with in Foles...
Torrag : 7/27/2015 3:44 pm : link
Instead he's gambling on one of the most injured QB's in recent memory who never proved he was a franchise guy when he was healthy. Guys like Kelly eventually think they're so much smarter than everyone that they outsmart themselves. To me that's what the igglets off season has been all about.

Thankfully for us
Chris684 : 7/27/2015 3:52 pm : link
the flaw with Kelly's logic is that Bradford is not on the same level as those other guys before the injury.
The difference between Manning/Brees and Bradford
Curtis in VA : 7/27/2015 3:54 pm : link
is that Manning/Brees had already proven themselves.

True, and that neither of the two were particularly injury prone
jcn56 : 7/27/2015 3:58 pm : link
before that point. Bradford has had a hard time staying healthy for some time now.
So, will Bradford be the next Phil Simms...
Big Blue Blogger : 7/27/2015 4:01 pm : link
...or the next Tim Couch?

Manning/Brees also only had one injury they were recovering from. Bradford's had 2-3 major injuries and hasn't played since October 20, 2013. That's almost 2 calendar years without a meaningful game.

A better comp would be Carson Palmer, but Bradford was never even on that level as a prospect and his pre-injury numbers fall well short of what Palmer did. Palmer's had some solid years post-injuries, but even the best of those years would only rank him as an above average QB probably in the 12-15 range. I think that's Bradfords ceiling at this point.
I was going to disagree about Brees being established
Ivan15 : 7/27/2015 4:04 pm : link
but his first 5 years at SD were pretty good.

Miami has suffered for 10 years after choosing Culpepper over Brees.

Over the weekend on Sirius. Beyond hilarious how he was talking about Bradford. Know he's a Total shill but it was like he was blabbering Mixture of Marino and Montana. If they want to blow smoke up people's butts fine but the Chip Kelly propaganda machine is in full swing. They are bordering on Soviet Union levels.

Bradford had his moments in St Louis but geez. This is going to be epic if they fall flat or he gets hurt.
Sound reasoning
81_Great_Dane : 7/27/2015 4:36 pm : link
but it only works if Bradford plays like a franchise QB.

By the way, we Giants fans will be having to deal with this issue once Eli departs, which is probably 5-8 years. Something to file away for future reference.
I know he hasn't played in almost 2 years, but let's not act like
Lopes1984 : 7/27/2015 4:39 pm : link
Sam Bradford was some scrub. Talent was never his issue, staying healthy was. The kid was the first overall pick for a reason, and prior to the injuries he looked like he was ready to fulfill that promise.

His last full season in St. Louis he completed about 60% of his passes, threw for 3700+ yards with 21 TD and 13 INT. He was on pace for even better numbers the following year before getting injured just under half way through the year.

I hate the Eagles, and I hope he doesn't pan out for them, but Sam Bradford is a better quarterback than he gets credit for.
here's the thing about Kelly's offense......
BillKo : 7/27/2015 4:42 pm : link
...virtually a monkey can run it.

You run up to the line, have the ball snapped, and throw to a pre-determined spot.

No audibles. No snap counts. No chess match at the line of scrimmage.

You really could make the arguement that putting a QB like Peyton Manning in that offense, and you'd be under utilizing him.

I can't see an offense like that winning anything at crunch time.

"Winner, winner, chicken dinner", What the hell does that mean?
Simple

If Bradford finally does stay healthy he'll have a good season. If he can't, well he won't of course.

Its a gamble he was willing to take. I don't think Kelly was sold on Foles as a QB.

Sanchez is a good backup.

I just think that this will be the year the Eagles finally have injuries and it will really hurt them much like injuries have crushed us the last 2.5 years.

Per the Urban Dictionary its a phrase used to convey a positive outcome.

Bradford has had injury concerns going back to college
Jay on the Island : 7/27/2015 5:36 pm : link
Now he has missed a substantial amount of time. Let's hope he doesn't stay healthy and live up to his potential however unlikely it is.

Then shouldn't it be "winner, winner, lobster dinner"?
Kelly is on record as saying that Foles was not mobile enough
GeofromNJ : 7/27/2015 5:58 pm : link
to play in Kelly's offense. Naturally some wonder why Kelly thinks mobility will not be an issue for Bradford. We'll soon find out.
It's a gamble,
giantgiantfan : 7/27/2015 6:19 pm : link
they guy was highly touted coming out of college but has played in 7 games in the last 2 years. He's thrown for over 20 touchdowns (21) once in his career. And in age where most top QBs throw for over 4,000 yards, well Bradford has never achieved more 3,700.

Again its a gamble, and it will be one of the most interesting things to watch this preseason and into the regular season. They also have protections in that trade where they get picks back from the Rams if Bradford doesn't play. It was a good trade for both sides IMO as Bradford gets a change of scenery and the Rams were done hoping the guy could stay on the field. At the moment, every starting QB in the NFC East has had more success than Bradford.

Eskin would blow chip kelly on national TV wearing a bow tie if it meant a 1pt increase in his ratings. Total fucking clown
No one thinks he's a scrub. But even
LauderdaleMatty : 7/27/2015 6:34 pm : link
When healthy he hasn't been Andrew Luck. Talented but he is literally always missing games. And regardless of talent u want to use him as a mobile running type QB with multiple ACLs? Anyone not a bit skeptical is I ignoring this kids whole history going back to Ok where he was hurt as well.

Chip Kelly was a great innovative college coach but he's treatedike he's Bill B by a lot of he media and fans. No NC and Philly excelled when the NFC east has been down. Sorry if I can't crown him infallible. He's dumped his best players. We will see how his system works with two years of NFL film on it despite the QB
Anyone who buys straight up the Bradford - Manning - Brees
BlueLou : 7/27/2015 7:36 pm : link
comparison has had a chip implanted.

Did Kelly actually say that? Does he ever listen to himself on tape?
Bradford is a gamble
JohnB : 7/27/2015 7:39 pm : link
No question about it and it could work out and it maybe a train wreck. Who knows.

My problem is that Murray has an injury history too. Either one is fine. Couple them together and you are rolling the dice too much with too much of your cap space. The chickens will come home to roost at some point.
Kelly is hitching his wagon to Bradford
RobCrossRiver56 : 7/27/2015 7:41 pm : link
Like Reid did with Michael Vick.

And we all know how that worked out..

I like and respect Andy Reid, even if I hated his teams in Philly. IMO Reid got railroaded into Vick.
I think it's pretty
SirYesSir : 7/27/2015 7:52 pm : link
damn hopeful at the moment to compare Bradford to Brees and Manning. Brees had hardly played in the league when he got injured, once, and came back from it. Manning was already an established all-timer when he suffered his injury. Bradford was a high pick who has been injured multiple times and has never shown the skills of either of them.
Especially given ...
FStubbs : 7/27/2015 9:10 pm : link
... as pointed out, he could somewhat win with the QB he already had. Rams fans feel like they've upgraded the position and gotten some extras to boot.
knock Kelly all you
bluepepper : 7/27/2015 9:48 pm : link
want but he knows offense. I am sure he watched a lot of film on Bradford. If he stays healthy I bet he's a really good fit for the Eagles and puts up some serious numbers.
Not such a big gamble...
trueblueinpw : 7/27/2015 9:55 pm : link
I don't think Foles was the key to the first Iggles Super Bowl. And if Bradford gets injured they still have Butt Fumble.
