NFT: Are Conspiracy Theorists Everywhere?

FatMan in Charlotte : 7/27/2015 10:08 pm
This past weekend I was in Boston for the first time since the Boston Marathon and little did I realize that my hotel at Copley Place was about two blocks from the bombing location.

As I was doing research trying to figure out exactly where the bombs went off, I came across at least 3 sites that call the bombing a hoax, replete with calls of actors playing the parts of the bombed.

All I can think is - What the fuck? I could see possibly if somebody was trying to theorize that it wasn't the Tsarnev brothers who did the act, but I really didn't think I'd see people claiming the act itslef was staged. Were people with bloody stumps hanging out in the alleys waiting to pop out? I mean, what the holy hell do people have go on in their brains to think something like that was faked?
I think one thing I learned over time

the more you travel, the more people you meet - the more you realize that there are a lot of dumb fucks in this world.
The night of that bombing was one of the wildest nights ever on BBI
BlueHurricane : 7/27/2015 10:13 pm : link
Some of us were up all night listening to scanners online as the cops chased the brothers and posting here. It was unreal hearing it play out in real time and literally hearing shots firing in city streets.

If any of those whack jobs had heard that night they would know it was far from staged. It was as intense as anything I have ever experienced.
Too many idiots

That was unreal. The links and info people were posting were so far ahead of anything on tv. Listening to the scanners was nuts. Gun fire and bombs being tossed. So much information and misinformation. What I found interesting at the time were all of the normal calls the police deal with happening at the same time. I don't know what would comple someone to actively deny such an event happened.
They did the same shit for Sandy Hook...

the bright side
WeatherMan : 7/27/2015 10:44 pm : link
is that the people espousing these nutjob theories on known events are self-identifying themselves as idiots not worth spending time on. For instance, say Chemtrails in a manner even resembling serious and you get put in the same classification from me as hardcore Eagles fans and folks with large facial tattoos, there's just no dealing with that level of stupid.
It's a coping mechanism
Rob in CT/NYC : 7/27/2015 11:01 pm : link
The world is a big, scary, chaotic place - isn't it much neater that the Bilderberger's control the world, rather than no one?

Plus, there is the comfort that comes from having "figured it all out" and getting to look down at the "sheeple"

The U.S is bad (and feels like it's getting worse) - but try on Russia, or Egypt...

All are highly offensive, not only for obvious reasons (Sandy Hook), but because they implicitly impugn the character of hundreds of decent people who are apparently more than happy to lie about missiles hitting airliners, FEMA camps, and whatever else the government is covering up.

I've ever been more offended on this site than the God/religion thread where the Sandy Hook Truther came here to talk about God.

With all due respect to those who lost loved ones in 9/11 and at the Boston Marathon, but I think "Sandy Hook was fake" trumps both of those conspiracy theories as the most disgusting. It was just disgusting on so many different levels, especially since the real reason for the truthers (gun rights etc.) was so easy to pick up on. I think I'd punch someone if they told me Sandy Hook was fake.

pjcas18 : 7/28/2015 12:24 am : link
they're every where. Rob is partially right, some times things happen that are so inexplicable people cling to any explanation that suggests how the act can happen without just believing their fellow human beings are evil enough to perpetrate these acts.

the media doesn't help.

I used to buy my wing sauce from a small business in Winchester, VA. Not a huge deal, I found it from a friend liked it, bought it online, spent a couple hundred dollars per year.

Over the years I became friends with the guy who owned the company, Bills fan, smart guy thought he was a good football fan and made great wing sauce.

then I began learning more about him. he's a 9-11 truther, building 7 could not have gone down any way other than government controlled implosion.

sandy hook hoaxer - FBI reports had 0 murders in Newtown, CT, so it must have been a false flag meant to further the gun control agenda.

Boston marathon was a false flag - NBC made the mistake of publishing a photo with the body parts and blood airbrushed out of the attach scene near the finish line - it's all the whack jobs need to believe it's a hoax.

he was also a holocaust denier - said based on the numbers reported and the camps reported there was no way they could have killed that many people in that period of time logistically.

moon landing - hoax.

and there's more, so I did some research and there are literally thousands of people like him that cling to holes, reporting inaccuracies, or theories and not facts to claims the media reports are not true and only the previously quoted "sheeple" believe them.

so I don't buy wing sauce or even interact with him any more. it's so tiring. everything is a government agenda.

I think i'd qualify it as a sickness (in my non-medical opinion) psychological at least.

JFK: whether or not you believe the hail of bullets or lone gunman, there's at least a shred of credibility for either.

Boston Bombing: live TV coverage and massive staged mayhem simply don't mix. Never say never, so to be charitable, I'd say a <1% chance of it being a conspiracy (in the wingnut sense of the word. technically, I think it was a conspiracy because more than one person was involved)
Short answer is YES they are everywhere.

There is alot of books on this subject as well as other literature; Scientific American has had series of articles (full story not free).

Basic Reasons

People don't like randomness; need to feel in control.

Explanation does not match preconceived ideas or beliefs. Why different groups of people will believe in different conspiracies.

People who believe in a conspiracy theory believe in more than one; Cognitive thinking, personality some paranoid or schizophrenic type traits.

Higher economic status & education less likely to believe, but still some pretty smart people believing in some dumb things.

Some make the case internet has helped spread.

one of them posted this on facebook yesterday. climate change = hoax, fluoride = hoax, and forget about stuff like benghazi. that's treason.

by 2050 this is the map of the USA due to climate change (which he scoffs at too as a left wing conspiracy since the polar ice caps are growing).

Quote:
According to a Business Insider video, researchers have shown that last year, west Antartic glaciers retreated past the point of no return, making the ice melt “unstoppable.”

Different research indicates that the Artic may experience ice-free summers by 2050. In other words, if all the Earth’s ice melts, the ocean would rise about 216 feet. This significant rise in water levels would have a major impact on all countries bordering an ocean, and they’d lose a huge amount of land if this scary scenario unfolds.

The video focuses on what the U.S. will look like when Earth’s entire polar ice cap melts, revealing that the entire eastern seaboard, including the entire state of Florida, would be lost to the Atlantic Ocean. The same goes for major cities like Houston and New Orleans, as the Gulf of Mexico would further expand inland. Other researchers have said that up to 5,200 square miles of the Mississippi delta would disappear over the course of 85 years.

We all are biased as such would be prone to believe in different conspiracies. But pending on how complex a conspiracy theory someone would adhere to imo has alot to do with other factors. Some of the conspiracies in order to be true would have to involve so many people and organizations. All facts presented are dismissed. It's obvious cognitive thinking skills in particular reasoning and logic come to play. Imo personality also a factor; suspicious vs trusting, stubborn vs open minded, need to seem clever, etc.

Sunday, when you ad the qualifier "to one extent or another", the view that oil is involved in our ME decisions is absolutely valid. Where the wild eyed conspiracy theorists come in is with the idea that going to Iraq was specifically to grab their oil. There were many reasons, but the underlying idea was to create stability (or at least remove an agent of instability)in that volatile region so there would be fewer supply interruptions or "shocks". And obviously they couldn't have been more wrong

knew Iraq was about the oil. Not in the 'gonna steal Iraq's oil' sense, but as Rob,River and Cam (and probably some others) pointed out about stability for the oil of the region. That said, the sales pitch for the war was very careful about minimizing the oil angle. It was smart because too many folks have a hard time with the nuances of sending our guys over to die 'for the oil' vs securing a vital region with a lifeblood of the modern world. But by working so hard to make the sale not about the oil, it makes it easy to snicker about the WMDs and say it was too about the oil.

one of them posted this on facebook yesterday. climate change = hoax, fluoride = hoax, and forget about stuff like benghazi. that's treason.

by 2050 this is the map of the USA due to climate change (which he scoffs at too as a left wing conspiracy since the polar ice caps are growing).

Sweet, we can finally get rid of Florida!!

plenty of documentation proving this, also, keeping the oil flowing and being priced in dollars was first and foremost to the cause.

I always love these claims of documentations being available, especially when it comes to classified reports that somehow all of these conspiracy theorists have in their possession.

of our national interest as there is, then I'm not too sure what would be. Certainly keeping terrorist nations like Iran from going nuclear would be right up there.

Anyway, Iraq is fortunate the West didn't just seize the oil. We certainly could have. However, the exercise was to let the Middle East know that we can and will if we have to. So yes, it was all about oil. Welcome to the grown up world.

Is all that really the conspiracy theory though? "Flow of oil" some might relate to, but I thought the tin foil conspiracy is that all our government officials are lackeys of Exxon or somesuch and its Exxon that sends us to wars at their behest.

No, I never believed in a 9/11 conspiracy. I believe the Bush Administration didn't give a flying rats ass about counterterrorism until 9/11, but a conspiracy? No.

Apples and oranges. Believe what you will. It isn't a conspiracy, it's a plain fact. There wasn't a single cabinet level meeting concerning terrorism in Bush's first year until 9/11 - this despite warnings from the outgoing administration, urgency from Richard Clarke and the alarming August 6, 2001 PDB titled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike Within the US".

Simply wasn't a concern of Bush at the time. That isn't a conspiracy. And it isn't equivalent to an ill-prepared FEMA organization pre-Katrina.
every president from Reagan into the present
fkap : 7/29/2015 2:08 pm : link
has been warned about terrorism on US soil. You can blast any one of them. Bush's predecessor took it so seriously that he left office without ever effectively doing much of anything despite having 2 or 3 attacks on US soil, embassies and warships. Clarke was largely ignored by the Clinton administration, too. Bush had a few scant months to set up his administration, and set any agenda into motion. Maybe he wouldn't have done any more than his predecessors. Maybe he would have. It's tin foil territory to allege he didn't give a rats ass about it, IMO.

Saying Bush ignored terrorism by singling him out but not mentioning things like the OKC bombing and the Wall St. attacks really shows bias.
