Of course, a lot can change in the next six weeks. But it's not a coincidence that Cunningham is wearing Mark Bavaro's number and the two rookie UDFAs are in the 40s.
...but Giant tight ends wear numbers in the 80s. The only recent exception I can think of was Travis Beckum, who wasn't much of a TE. Examples of the normal progression are Darcy Johnson and Jake Ballard, who wore 48 on the practice squad, then upgraded to 84 and 85 when they made the team. Similarly, Cunningham wore 49 last year, and has moved up to 89.
IIRC, Ballard also wore 81 for his brief roster stint in 2010.
Those #s. Has nothing to do with the practice squad. Every # in the 80s is used by other players except 83. All those players have been in the league longer or higher picks.
Geremy Davis is listed at #9 on the roster. He will probably be wearing that open #83.
RE: Carl: I don't know what they do at Stony Brook...

They may be penciled in that way, but let's see who is still around in playing shape after camp and the preseason. Sad but certain, a lot will change between now and then, and health will be the greatest reason.
