NFT: Yanks talk 7-28

superspynyg : 7/28/2015 10:15 am
Jays make big move and improve both bull pen and the lineup. How or do the Yanks respond? We're only 7 games ahead of the Jays and still play them 10 more times. Plus according to amoroso the jays are not done with trading.

Now this is no way a panic mode situation as we are playing good ball. But what is Cashman thinking right now?

Any word on Ellsbury? How is his shoulder?

Prospect question: I have read and heard from several laces ( including here) that the Yanks may not think that 3b Jagielo is not a MLB 3b, and hat he us more suited for 1b. If that is true why don't they put him at 1b now? He is hitting great .284 avg 36 runs 35 rbis 9 hrs with a 347 obp at Trenton. Would he make Bird expendable via trade?

Nonsense. With that bullpen and the big bats they can stay with anyone. Does KC really scare you? The Angels? St Louis - yes...

IF HEALTHY - big if, this team can hang with anyone. They have been slowly improving through the season.

I disagree. I think this team, as constructed, has a chance to be better in the post season. The bottom of their rotation doesn't get to pitch or replaces a guy like Capuano in the pen. The bullpen is as good as anyone's and a good portion of their lineup is hitting now.

You think teams want to face Tanaka and Pineda twice each, plus face a top 5 of the lineup of Ellsbury, Gardner, A-Rod, Teixeira, and McCann? Plus a back of the bullpen of Shreve, Betnaces, and Miller, plus a few middle relievers who are pitching very well, plus some guys in the bottom 1/3 of the lineup starting to hit?
Which Pineda? The 16k one or the one who got shelled vs.
Victor in CT : 7/28/2015 3:51 pm : link
the Twinkies. Lately you don't know which one you're going to get. I don't think it's a given that you get 2 great outings from him in one series. And it's still debateable whether he 1) makes it through the season and 2) if he will have anything left in the tank come October. He's a talent and I like him, but he has not finished a season since 2011
The biggest thing for the Yankees is the 6 games with Toronto
blue2 : 7/28/2015 3:52 pm : link
next month. A split there would put them in fantastic position heading into September. If the Yankees have a sizable lead when the rosters expand the bullpen is going to get very deep.
we need Pineda to remember how to throw his slider
RasputinPrime : 7/28/2015 4:04 pm : link
and perhaps an affordable starter (Latos) to go with another reliever who could pair with Shreve to pitch the 7th.

I don't think we need to be desperate and I don't think we win or lose by whomever we trade for. We win or lose by the ability of the current core to stay healthy.
From March in the Post

“Playoffs and then beyond,’’ GM Brian Cashman told The Post. “Be a good enough team to get to the playoffs, allow me to tweak in-season to make it good enough to win a World Series.’’

Time to do it. They've exceeded expectations so far.

Maybe a month or so ago, I could understand this statement. But anyone who's been watching this team every night over the past month or so, nah. This team is good and beats good teams. As long as they stay healthy, they are in very good position for the rest of the season.

Yep, and this bullpen is one of the best in MLB, if not the best. Miller missed 4-5 weeks and they were still effective even without their closer.
As others have said
kash94 : 7/28/2015 4:43 pm : link
I think the Yankees actually project better in the postseason due to that bullpen. They can go with the SF Giants strategy last year and have their starters go 5-6 innings and go with Shreve, Betances, and Miller for the rest of the innings. Remember that all 3 can also pitch 2 innings if necessary.

Depending on what seed the Yankees get, they can also try and skip a start by Nova or Eovaldi depending on who pitches worse down the stretch.

Also, this isn't the classic MLB anymore - almost every team has holes. Also baseball in general is just a crapshot at times - not like the NBA where the team with the best or 2nd best player is almost guaranteed a spot in the finals.

Still 2 months though so a lot can change.
The bullpen is fine for the playoffs
illmatic : 7/28/2015 4:56 pm : link
it's the rotation and the boom or bust offense that worries me. The offense has been much better the past month or so though. But does anyone here actually trust anyone other than Tanaka in a postseason game? And that's assuming he's healthy and that his arm is feeling good at that point.

The Yankees would be a major threat with a guy like Hamels or Price. Without another potential ace, I think their ceiling is the ALCS and that's about it. I think the offense would get shut down by a great staff and/or the other starters just wouldn't be good enough to hand the game over to the bullpen.
oh sweet jesus, are you actually resurrecting the idiotic

"They hit too many homers!!!" argument from a few years ago? You've got to be kidding me.
If you're talking to me
illmatic : 7/28/2015 5:13 pm : link
my comment was in regards to the way the offense either seems to be doing great or very little, home runs or not. A month or two ago, we watched them repeatedly lose games where they would only score a run or two. Now that they're doing better recently, I guess it means there's no chance it will go back to that? And we've all seen them score three runs in the first inning and then nothing for the following eight innings. That's what I'm talking about with this offense. I just don't fully trust any aspect of this team right now as far as the playoffs go except for the bullpen. But the rotation is the bigger concern between the two.

1- Ellsbury (CF)
2- Gardner (LF)
3- A-rod (DH)
4- Teix (1B)
5- Young (RF)
6- Headley (3B)
7- Murphy (C)
8- Gregorius (SS)
9- Ryan (2B)

Capuano the starter.

Good news about Ellsbury. Day off for Drew, Beltra, and McCann

watch out for the Yankees as they are very much alive in the Chapman and Kimbrel sweepstakes and that Cashman is being very sneaky about it.

of Steinbrenner getting kicked out of baseball by Fay Vincent. That was really the lowest point in Yankee history. That was the whole mess where George paid Howard Spira to dig up some dirt on Winfield. Ironically it saved the franchise because Gene Michael took more control of the team and kept prospects that eventually became the core of the 90s dynasty

That was a great day, the turning point for the franchise. It was "the Fumble" for the Yankees. THe younger fans don't remember what a true embarassment that Steinbrenner was. He was running the team into the ground. I give him credit for staying out of Stick's way for the most part when he was allowed back. It set the base for 20+ years of success
Moreno is effectively the ghost of AJ Burnett...
Dunedin81 : 7/29/2015 9:19 am : link
Wouldn't have expected that sort of performance from him but he is still a solid relief prospect. One of probably ten either in the minors or on the SWB shuttle who could pitch in major league oens right now.
They hit too many homers!
arniefez : 7/29/2015 9:20 am : link
NO ONE EVER said they hit too many Home Runs. What people said correctly is that the only way they scored was hitting Home Runs which was problematic and 100% correct.

No kidding. The dynasty years made a lot of people forget all of the idiotic, destructive things George Steinbrenner did. As far as his legacy goes, you have to accept the bad along with the good. And like you, I'm certain those great '90s teams would never have happened if he hadn't been exiled. Remember when both Bonds and Maddux took less money to sign elsewhere after the 1992 season?
BTW Didi's July numbers now up to .324/.372/.452

Yes I do. They couldn't get anybody to come here. The final straw for me was actually in 1982 when they had 3 managers. 3! Stick, Bob Lemon, Clyde King. Also in that year, drafted but couldn't sign BJ Surhoff, traded Willie McGee for Bob Sykes, traded TOmmy John to the Angels for a bag of balls.

I could go on. It was more fun watching the Mets lose 100 games that watch that shit.

If you ignore his March/April stats, removing that horrendous start when he clearly was overwhelmed with the pressure of replacing a legend, he's hitting .270/.327/.383 since May 1.

Just to place into context here, since this is now not a "small sample size" anymore (May to end of July is a good stretch of three months)- Didi has an OPS of .710 since May 1. There are exactly 5 SS in ALL of the Majors with an OPS of .710 (Tulo, Crawford, Peralta, Iglesias, and Bogaerts). There is one SS with a .706 OPS (Miller).

There is probably more upside still there, as he is finally showing some life against LHP lately- the HR against Harrison was a great sign.
SS OPS
rich in DC : 7/29/2015 10:28 am : link
That should have said OPS of .710 or more.
Currently lots of offensive pluses
rich in DC : 7/29/2015 10:36 am : link
McCann is third in MLB in OPS from C, Tex is ranked highly in a number of categories with 3B.

Downside- Alex Rios and Brennan Boesch are the ONLY RF in MLB- and Boesch only has 56 ABs- who have a LOWER WAR than Beltran. In fact, for the season, Beltran has a -0.6 WAR. Ouch.

IMO, which Judge probably isn't ready to take RF now, it will be hard to argue that he would not be an upgrade next spring.
