He is done. He has visited teams a bunch already and no one has signed him. Guys who miss games with significant injuries do not start getting healthier as they get older
If your LT of the future is Flowers, you may as well put him in from day 1.
Another of the 'plug him in for 10 years' players who cant stay healthy - unfortunate
due diligence. If he shows that he's healthy enough, you can look to bring him in for depth. What if Flowers pulls a hamstring (or worse) early on in camp? I'd rather have a veteran protecting Eli's blindside.
The Giants have spent the past few years re-working the skill positions around Eli and they finally have those pieces in place for him to have a huge year in this offense. But it will all go to hell if no one in front of him can block.

Agreed. No way the Giants bring him back for a second visit--oh, wait...

I would think if they hired him, it would be for RT.

Agreed. They need to bridge the gap until Beatty returns. That should be around mid season, maybe a bit sooner. The idea of Newhouse/Mosley for half a year scares the crap out of me. We'll see how it plays out.
I feel strongly that with the Giants recent injury history....
If he's healthy and can still play at the level of a starter, then do it. Downside would be wtf did they see to give the swing tackle contract to Newhouse.

I agree. Tackle position is a question mark - I'm high on Flowers, but expecting a young guy (allegedly with technique issues?) to step in immediately and succeed is a lot to ask for. I think the interior will be good, which is important given the three-step drop focus in this offense. Can see a tough September/October before getting a lot better in November/December.r

Didn't he already leave without signing? I thought I saw that..Perhaps I misread

Jake Long update: I'm told FA OL is already in the building this morning for his 2nd visit with the Giants. #NYG

Yes, unless he's two places at once. In which case, sign him. He's at the Giants facilities.

Cool, Stapleton confirms it. From the first posts of this thread it wasn't entirely clear, but I hadn't been paying close attention either. grin

If Jake Long checks out medically - clearly a big if, but still - Giants should not let him leave the building.
Makes too much sense to sign
wouldn't look at this as a typical second visit. When he came in the first time he wasn't healthy. The Giants have been keeping tabs as well as monitoring the situation internally (the horses they currently have). It's in Long's best interest if he's healthy to re-visit interested teams in order to get the best deal. It also doesn't surprise me that he visited Atlanta first. I'm sure he has the Giant's attention.
If he can pass a physical this makes too much sense.
I know there is interest in him too and prove-it deals could provide incentive to both if healthy enough to contribute. It will be an interesting couple of days.
I have personally been able to witness and watch both the careers of Newhouse and Schwartz and to say they are equally both un-impressive ... we are at an all time low as far as "talent" goes up front with the exception of Pugh ... hoping Richburg and Flowers prove to be what they think they can be ...
another good one!

At the least, both could provide some additional leadership
Even if his body is beat to shit this former number one overall draft pick should be better then what we got at right tackle. He wasn't that bad as a Ram was he? I know the concern isn't how he performed last but his health but either way...
HR, I don't get the Giants love for Schwartz either. No way I'd have

If healthy enough to play it's a no brainer. I keep hearing until Beatty comes back I'm not exactly convinced he's going to be worth a damn at all this year. Unless I'm wrong he can't lift at all right now or in the near future? How much strength has he lost in his upper body? To say he cam come right in when healthy I'm not sold

Probably the same thing they saw in Charles Brown.
OL depth around the league is weak and they don't, in general, seem to have a very good knack for evaluating it anyway, at least not anymore.
Hoping he checks out physically and we sign him on the spot
The only true weakness that I see on our offense is the lack of a starting LT and while Long MAY NOT be that due to his injuries, it's still possible that he CAN be that. That's a risk worth taking.

I am told the Giants still have interest in free-agent tackle Jake Long, who visited with the Falcons yesterday.

Worst case scenario he is the starting RT immediately.

You're not worried about the RT?
