The only true weakness that I see on our offense is the lack of a starting LT and while Long MAY NOT be that due to his injuries, it's still possible that he CAN be that. That's a risk worth taking.

You're not worried about the RT?

Well, that's why we drafted Ereck Flowers, no? Whatever side they put him on, I hope he stabilizes that position. He seems to be more of a RT to me though, at least early on.
Let Flowers cut his teeth at LT

His future is there give him first crack at it. RT is the problem right now. The talent there is subpar.

root like hell for him to succeed and set the position for a decade, he's by far the most talented OL we've got.
My hope is, and it's only a hope...

is Moseley surprises and plays RT and Flowers is at least adequate(early on)on the left side.

Long passes the physical and is a veteran swing tackle.

Watching him at the U, he looked more like a RT to me. I have questions about his foot speed so I don't know how he'll handle the speed rushers. I do think he has the strength to handle the power rushers though on the right side.

I saw similar attributes and questioned NYG's love for him. But, where they picked him, how highly he was graded, and all the talk from NYG since then has been about his future at LT. I'm rooting for him to succeed, they can find a RT more easily next Winter.

Good thing he is a tackle and not playing guard. In this system, it's the front 3 that are vital. If there is a silver lining it's that our front 3 seem to be better than our tackle situation. So that's a big plus.

Yeah, but there are instances of guys taken in the top ten that stick at RT. Look at Lane Johnson. Of course we don't have an All-Pro like Jason Peters to force a top 10 pick to the right side, but still.

Let's just hope he has enough left physically to hold down the fort until Beatty is ready to return. I really have little faith in Newhouse as a starter.

Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher both started their first seasons at RT also due to the presence of Eugene Monroe and Brandon Albert.
I'd be surprised if he wasn't the starting LT
Big Rick in FL : 7/29/2015 12:05 pm : link
Week 1 if he is signed. Don't think he has ever played RT & I'd much rather have a vet in at LT then a rookie.

PFF had him in there top 100 overall players in 2013.

Two years battling injuries and form meant it was reasonable to wonder if Long was ever going to be the player he once was. Well theres no shame in being wrong as before his season was cut short three snaps into Week 16, Long was back to his best and then some, posting just two negative grades and the seventh-highest grade of all left tackles. Best Performance: Week 8, SEA @ STL, +5.9 Key Stat: Finished the year with the second-highest run-blocking grade of all left tackles at +14.8.

Well, Fisher sucks, but Joeckel is a good example. There ya go. It all depends on how the coaching staff sees Flowers.

It's that the injuries have robbed him of what made him a high first round pick.

He never played RT because he had the talent to play Left. a diminished LT can be a fine RT.

This I believe as well re LT and RT
A solid run-blocking RT-sign me up
rich in DC : 7/29/2015 12:35 pm : link
With Flowers and Pugh on the left side, and Schwartz with Long on the right side, the Giants RB might actually be able to get positive yardage when they run the ball.

Worst case, the Giants sign him and he has nothing left- move to plan B. Best case, he's not a LT anymore, but a declining LT is still an above-average RT for a year.

Then, RT becomes the FA/draft priority next year and the OL rebuild is done.

This is hilarious.
FWIW, Long played RT his first two years at Michigan.

So the position is not completely unfamiliar, though that was nearly ten years ago.
Well, the reason to move Flowers to RT is if they thought

If he's healthy what's not to like.

Gives NYG additional option at OT. Insurance if Flowers struggles on the left side. Would mean Pugh could stay at LG.

all signs point to EF as the LT of the future, the question was only when and WB's pec answered that.

Now, it's up to EF to stick, of course but they're trying to establish the best OL and avoid musical chairs. That's been the whole point of setting the left side of the OL and set up competition for RT.
I see what Raanan means about him being a mess before the ACLs,

Wrong, he's a LT long term, that's been said repeatedly by too many in this organization for you to make this mistake.
The original plan was Flowers at RT

They could go either way with Long but moving Flowers back to RT doesn't "slow his development". It's whatever the best ft is given Long's current abilities.

I was wrong on this initially and have come around. I thought the early indications by scouts and the giants were that Flowers was a RT long term. That has been hashed out already. They obviously viewed him as the LT for long term future and Beatty's injury just moved that time table up. If Long is deemed healthy enough to play, it will only be a question of whether or not he can outplay Newhouse for RT during the summer.
