NFT: Windows 10

eclipz928 : 7/29/2015 10:39 am
Launches today. I actually already have the download queued up on my laptop. Pretty unprecedented move by Microsoft offering the OS upgrade for free, which is cool . . . but it also makes me nervous. But I also hate Windows 8 enough to throw caution to the wind and upgrade asap. Anyone else planning on taking the early plunge?
I just finished installing it
Wuphat : 7/29/2015 10:41 am : link
So far, I like it

Nice to have the Start button back without having to install Classic Shell

Combines the app look with the File Explorer look.

You summed up my feelings
schabadoo : 7/29/2015 10:42 am : link
Would normally never upgrade early in a rollout, but really dislike 8.1. Thinking of waiting a week for the inevitable update to fix the early issues.
Just got a new lap top last week

getting the upgrade for free as well.. likely have the icon on my desktop at home.. I will download it...
I reserved a free upgrade

but I'm sticking with Windows 7 a bit longer while Microsoft works out the kinks. If I had Windows 8 I'd probably be in more of a hurry to upgrade.
Can't wait to go home and install in on both my desktop and laptop
Sly Guy : 7/29/2015 10:44 am : link
Windows 8 was pretty messy in terms of the Metro apps. It was amazing in the fact that it didn't hog up memory. 10/10 would go W8 again.

I'm excited for the launch of Windows 10 and what Microsoft has cooked up.
Agree about W7
Wuphat : 7/29/2015 10:44 am : link
My desktop is running W7 and I don't plan on changing that.

My laptop was running 8.1

In the history of Microsoft (or least it's Windows OS) - I do not remember a version that was released that DID NOT have a service pack released - shortly after.

Same boat here.

Im keeping 7 on the desktop but will be putting 10 on the laptop.

May wait a week or 2 though.

Been running Windows 10 Insider Preview
antdog24 : 7/29/2015 11:13 am : link
for a couple of months now. It updated to the final release last week so I've been running the release version a week early. It really is solid, I like it much better than 8.1. No complaints so far and I haven't noticed any issues yet.
I Have Windows 8.1 (Came With The Laptop)
Trainmaster : 7/29/2015 11:21 am : link
I hate it with passion. I still have Windows 7 at work.

I'm on the upgrade list as well. As others have said, if I had Windows 7, I'd wait. Since I'm on 8.1 at home, I want to flush that piece of crap OS off my machine as quickly as possible.

Hopefully Microsoft's "every other OS is good" will hold true:

XP - Very good
Vista - bad
Windows 7 - good
Windows 8 - horrific
Windows 10 - ???

If Windows 10 kills my machine, I guess I could also unbox my original Intel 8088 IBM PC from 1983 that's in the loft in my garage and fire up DOS.
It was a pretty seamless install
Wuphat : 7/29/2015 11:24 am : link
It didn't require an HDD format, just patience as it goes through the motions (which required about 3 button clicks)

Nothing got deleted. All of my files are intact.
For those on the fence... There really aren't any "kinks" to work out.
ballanda : 7/29/2015 12:28 pm : link
After a very long and unprecedented "Insider Preview" program, Microsoft really nailed it with this release. They listened and made changes during the whole process, based on the feedback of millions of the preview users.

Also, updates and fixes will be delivered rapidly, like never before. Since this is the "last" version of Windows, in that it can just be continuously updated.

It's solid. There is no reason to not upgrade ASAP.

I agree with the previous sentiments about Windows 8.1 I picked up this current laptop about a month ago with the intention to update immediately. I did and so far I really like it.

Seems like a good successor to Windows 7.
so far I am loving it

I hated the combined metro and desktop interfaces in windows 8/8.1

Its still there a bit, but much less so. Metro apps open in windows. The task view and multiple desktop modes are long overdue.

And I really like the new start menu.

I did have 2 issues, my touchpad drivers and my touchscreen drivers did not update. They did not work after the update and I had to go to the Acer website to manually install the updates. Not a big deal to me, but novices will be frustrated by things like that.
If I reserve a copy of Win 10
Steve in South Jersey : 7/29/2015 3:32 pm : link
will it give me a chance to say yes or no when the download is ready or will it install by itself either overnight or in background without my knowing?

I have Windows 7. I am happy with it and fear that I may regret Windows 10 because my computer is probably 3 years old now and may not have the resources to run it well.

It will download in the background autotmatically, I believe, but you will have control over if/when the upgrade is installed.

You'll be given the option at the time your reserve is tagged to begin upgrading, from what I understand.

My (very old) computer
Rick5 : 7/29/2015 6:15 pm : link
crashed over the weekend, so I bought a new Dell. I learned to hate 8.1 pretty quickly. I just upgraded to 10 this afternoon. Much better. Now I can start copying over all of my old files (I was waiting until after I upgraded).
Good evolution...
trueblueinpw : 7/29/2015 6:17 pm : link
Like others here, I am looking forward to upgrading my 8.1 boxes. I'm not yet recommending any live Windows 7 business computers to upgrade. It is funny though that almost all corporate and small business computers skipped Vista and now they'll skip 8.
I have two old PCs still on XP

Probably less. Windows 7 was terrible at managing resources, much worse than Windows 8 after it. If you're running Win7 right now and have been running it for a while, go check out the size of your WIndows\WinSXS folder. Yikes!

Is this an issue with the PC? Or is it possible the rollout hasn't gotten to this product yet?

Easy download and installation. Works smoothly and is quick. Long boot, though. Had Windows 7 Pro before. Office 2007 working, too. Norton does not like Edge (the replacement for Explorer). Chrome still works just as it did before.

Long boot? Aw shit, I was afraid of that. My desktop boots in about 15 seconds right now and most of that is POST and card BIOS stuff.

Haven't timed it but it feels three times as long as that.
The upgrade went really well last night. No issues. The only problem
BeerFridge : 7/30/2015 9:16 am : link
that i've noticed is that I had the PC I was upgrading set to boot to desktop without a password. And Windows 10 Does not seem to want to do that. I went and reconfigured it and it keeps requiring a password. Weird.

I haven't noticed any slowness at all, even on start up. But it's a pretty fast PC.

Thanks. The problem is when I search for updates on the computer, it always says there is an error. I brought my laptop to work to make sure it wasn't the wifi in my house or something and the same issue is happening here.
My experience was the boot is longer
Matt M. : 7/30/2015 1:21 pm : link
but, not necessarily long. One nice thing about Windows 8.1 was the boot was very fast. 10 takes a little longer, but nowhere near as long as older versions.

No problems, ran smoothly. Today, computer has shut down & restarted a couple of times. Last time I saw KMODE-EXCEPTION-NOT-HANDLED Read online that this has happened in other versions as well. If I completely download Windows 10 again could that eliminate this problem? Not very tech oriented so any help would be appreciated!
You can try a refresh install and keep your files

No

I reserved my copy months ago and I don't have a download yet , I read an article that they scan your system to see how smoothly 10 will run on it before they give it to you And if it wouldn't run great, they will delay your download (they don't want bad reviews from the start?).

on the "free" part of the free Windows 10 upgrade?

I have Windows 8.1 that came with the system I recently purchased. Do I have to upgrade immediately or very soon because the offer will expire or run out? I don't mind 8.1 and would rather wait a bit before I make the move.

Also - why 8.1 to 10? Does Microsoft has a thing with the number 9?

Relax - you have 1 year to upgrade.

As for the version number, Microsoft hasn't given a clear answer. The most likely reason I've heard is that the Windows 95/98 series was commonly called Windows 9x, and calling this one 9 might bring confusion. Some old software programs out there might even be flummoxed by a verson number 9.
