Tom Coughlin Comments on JPP and other issues with Vrentas

VRENTAS: So you haven’t been able to speak to Pierre-Paul?

COUGHLIN: No. No. I want to help. I want to be there for him. But he’s decided that he doesn’t want our help. He thinks that something will come of it. But, all I care about, all any of us care about, the whole organization, is the well-being of the kid. Something traumatic has taken place here, and we have all kinds of experts here in this city that are at our disposal. Putting those things together is very easy.

I'm hearing from both Coughlin here and Mara in the NY Post piece is placing a lot of blame on JPPs reps, particularly his agent

He obviously can't textor dial left handed. :-)
Just read this article and went looking to see if someone posted it

Very interesting article. The Giants are very fortunate to have Tom Coughlin as their coach.

Eric from BBI : Admin : 7/29/2015 4:36 pm : link
VRENTAS: Where were when you got the call about Jason Pierre-Paul?

COUGHLIN: It was Sunday afternoon, the fifth. That afternoon. I think (GM) Jerry (Reese) was the first one to text me. I texted Jason right away. I just said, “How can I help you?” But I didn’t hear anything back, so. And really there has been very little information even to this point in time. Everybody in this building is concerned with him and his welfare. Even to the point where this fiasco, when Ronnie (Barnes) goes down there and Jessie (Armstead) goes down there, and he won’t see them—these are the people he has depended on all the time he has been there. I don’t know what he thought he was going to accomplish by not allowing them to be there to assist, to help, whatever needed to be done. For Ronnie Barnes to add his medical expertise at that point in time … I don’t do anything without calling Barnes. I don’t. If there’s anything, you call him, and he will take care of everything. He’s phenomenal. I thought that was a really poor move by them. By his people. I don’t know what they think they are hiding. It only makes us, me personally, think the worst. I think (defensive line coach) Robert Nunn has talked to him a couple times on the phone. He tries to assure people that he is fine or going to be fine, but I don’t know any more than that.
tom is way way down

TC stealing my lines.

But after reading TCs quotes, I believe even more strongly that you will not see JPP in a Giants uniform again.

He bit hand that was trying to feed him. And lost a finger.

He blew it. Off.

Matt M. : 7/29/2015 4:51 pm : link
the worse it looks for him. And it looks even worse for his agent and other handlers. I am willing to give him a little bit of a benefit of the doubt that this is simply him taking bad advice. But, damn, at this point he hasn't realized it is bad advice?
That was great stuff.

Can't wait to hear TC's corny slogan this year - probably FDR-related.

No, it will be Bob Dole related :-)

for the Giants again. You don't usually see Coughlin call out a player directly like that.
What's more, is how doesn't JPP realize the advice he is getting
Matt M. : 7/29/2015 4:59 pm : link
from his agent seems, quite obviously, like it only has the agent's pockets in mind. This is a money grab for an agent who is very likely not going to get another shot at a nice payday from JPP.
That's a great interview...kudos to JV

I want one more shot at the big game for Tom ...and Eli. He's a HOF coach and arguably the greatest in NY Giants history. If my son played in the NFL I'd want TC to be his coach.

I love that man
BlueHurricane : 7/29/2015 5:02 pm : link
Really and truly love him for all he is, all he stands for and all he has done. Hopefully he can go out on his terms whenever that is because he he sure as hell deserves it.

Did you see this part? "He thinks that something will come of it."

The kid has been told to keep his mouth shut, stay off Twitter and Facebook and keep the team in the dark to create a risk to any decision the team might want to make. The Giants are making an all-out media offensive to get information - they've sent the owner out to push the kid away from what his agent is telling him to do, the coach-father to say how much they want to help, next will be the DC waxing eloquent about how he'd love to have the kid in the classroom.

It's a harsh world gentlemen and there is a lot of dough at stake. Don't let sentimentality get in the way of appraising this situation. As I suspected Fatman, you are a rank sentimentalist.

Between tc and Mara yesterday, I don't recall the giants being quite frank about things like this. Just a shame if ..which seems likely..is going via his agents advice on through. IMO, its really disrespectful of him.
I suspect, if Plax isn't Plax, Phillips makes the tackle on Celek

sentamentalist - but there is a right way and a wrong way of going about negotiations.

JPP picked one of the absolute worst ways to go about it.

If he was looking to maximize his value while hiding the extent of his injuries, he has to realize he's in the 21st century of immediate information, not the Dark Ages.

By refusing medical and guidance help from the team, he kind of revealed the extent of his injuries unless:
a) the Giants are stupid
b) he really wasn't injured and just wants out

a) has been proven to be false over the years and b) is indicative of a guy I wouldn't want to have around healthy or not.

This isn't about negotiations - it is about getting horrific advice from agents and blindly running with it.

People might say "it's just business", but that only clouds the fact that it is about the shittiest effort put forth by a player negotiating in the history of sports.
"Hiding" his hand from the Giants,
Big Blue '56 : 7/29/2015 6:30 pm : link
made zero sense..Did he really think that upon examining it that they wouldn't see what they EXPECTED to see? Did he/his Agents, think that by hiding it, the Giants would be somehow fooled?

I think
ron mexico : 7/29/2015 6:40 pm : link
he was afraid if the Giants saw the hand in the aftermath of the accident they would pull the tender

He thinks if he signs the tender and reports they will put him on the shelf for the year and not pay him

And the only card he has left to play is deny access to information, hope for miraculous healing to the point that he can pass a physical some point in the year and earn some game checks

That was a great article!

Outstanding interview by Vrentas. My favorite part is TC/s response

about Beckham.

"Here's the thing about Odell:

1) He will listen.
2) He wants what everyone else wants (a ring.)
3) He wants to do it right. (ie willing to work at it.)
4) He wants to be a great player.
5) He's very smart.
6) He loves to play.
7) He loves to do things as well as they can be done.
8) He really enjoys working with Eli.
9) He'll do whatever you ask. He'll block... run reverses
10) He'll give me a shot (about something TC said...)"

In sum TC said: "Now this is a different kind of rookie."

And that's the thing about OBJ according to TC...
at this point, they (the Giants)

Really? Is that what you would do to your child after he or she had blown up a hand so badly in an accident that she/he needed a finger amputated and skin grafts?

Think about that a bit.

Sorry man everyone says the Giants are a class organization and for JPP to snub them like that is just a tremendous insult. Me personally if my finger is involved I don't maybe I listen to what they have to say and maybe save my finger. But to not even talk to the people who have taken care of you so far is just a slap in the face.

Early (honorary) leader for the Hope Johnson Award! Seriously, that will be the gold standard for TC interviews, and I doubt there'll be any competition before TC is well into retirement. I don't think he's ever been so candid and expansive, and huge credit goes to Jenny V.
