Williams, Alfaro, Thompson (prospects 4, 5, 6), Eickhoff, Harrison, Asher for Hamels, Diekman, and $$$.
That is an insane haul for Philly and their farm system is largely rebuilt. Wonder how much money they are kicking into the deal. Can't possibly think the Phils would eat more than half the salary in 2016 and part of the salary this year
If Texas was smart they would have traded Gallardo to a contender for prospects instead of pretending that they're a contender. Philly robbed them blind and I'm glad the Yanks didn't try to match that. They don't have a good core to begin with; they're not as good as Houston (rapidly improving and an AL favorite next year) or the Angels. They should have been selling all their veterans outside of Prince

dang it.. thanks for nothing, Texas.
Phils are getting the no 1 pick this upcoming draft too.
with so many options on the market so a nice return in that sense. I wonder what Houston was offering...
A nice return? They stripped away half of Texas' farm system and set themselves up nicely. Harrison could be a good arm in the NL and they got some top prospects from Texas. They are also off the hook for most of Hamels' money although they are probably kicking in most of the rest of 2015 and a small fraction of 2016 (like 6-7 million or so)
Their lineup will still be Prince and Moreland and a bunch of stiffs. Their pen will still suck. And, if you assume Gallardo is leaving, then they're really not improving their rotation much. 3-5 will still be average at best.

Ordo isn't bad and I am sure they are banking on Gallo and eventually mazara. Deshields is only 22. It's risky for sure. They need to get rid of the stiffs of belre and Hamilton so they can spend money.
as legit #1 & #2 they're a playoff contender next year. The other pieces can be filled in. Two legit aces puts them right in the mix. They'll need more for sure but that's a great foundation.
First of all, it assumes Darvish will be the same pitcher he was
Especially in his first season back, that may not be the case. Second of all, it assumes that Hamels a)is an ace in the AL b)will continue to pitch like one into his mid-30s.
There are just an awful lot of questionable assumptions you have to make in order to think Texas would be a legit contender. They have to bank on a 32 year old Prince Fielder staying healthy and productive on a par with this year rather than the two previous seasons. They need Moreland to hit like he has this year rather than sink back into mediocrity. They need all their ballyhooed prospects to produce almost immediately. They have to find decent backend starters and completely overhaul the pen. They're locked into some lousy players in Andrus, Hamilton and the withering husk of Beltre.
Could they contend? Sure. The 2013 Sawx showed that any suckass team can hit the lottery and have the stars align so virtually everyone on the roster has a best case scenario season. I just don't see them as a likely contender.
I mean, look at Texas and then look at Houston and the Angels

Harrison is a broken down pitcher with a bad back owed $26M. The Rangers held on to their top two prospects. It's a nice return, it's not a gang rape...

His wifes family is from the area. Texas and the Yanks were the only two AL teams on his trade list. There were about 7 teams from the NL.

Hamels and Yu is a good start to contend for next season, don't you think?

Houston wanted Hamels bad, and supposedly offered more. But Hamels wouldnt waive his no trade clause. Curious to see what they offered.
