Maybe try Long Beach. A lot of good spots for lunch / drinks and you can head to the boardwalk, etc. Good area to just walk around.

Brixx and Barley, The Park bar and grill, Sutton Place all decent places.

About a 20 minute drive from there to the coliseum.

If you try and get onto the beach I think they charge like 12 dollars a person. It's worth it. You don't get the scum that you get at jones. Not dirty and a nice little beach town. Nice restaurants and sports bars and a good atmosphere

there's a lot more to do there than Jones Beach, and its roughly the same distance to the coliseum

Jones Beach is worth the visit just to see the Robert Moses

architecture, landscaping and facilities. It's a modern wonder.

At Long Beach, you have to pay to get onto the sand, and parking is hard to find.

As most as have said, Long Beach is the move

and if you want to avoid the 10 bucks you have to pay for the beach that NoPeanutz alluded to. Drive for 5 more minutes to Lido Beach and it's free (while still very close to the restaurants and other activities at Long Beach).
