That seems to be the case based on that statement by Melvin. Oh well. Would've loved to add someone like Gomez in the lineup, but not if the hip is a real concern. Back to Upton, Cespedes or Bruce?

Good call, you were the first to think of that being the reason

Thanks. It just made more sense with Milwaukee telling their side it was a done deal and us clearly not (Flores still in the lineup)
has admitted to not running out of fear of aggravating his hip this year. I knew those stolen bases numbers were fishy. Wow. The more I think of this, the more Im glad this didn't happen. A less responsible GM might have felt the pressure and gone with it anyway. IDK.
it's a bummer - saw Carig say the front office is really disappointed because they viewed Gomez as a much better fit than anyone else out there.
Guess it's on to other targets. Cat is likely out of the bag that they want a CF'er, Coco Crisp and Rajai Davis are 2 reasonably interesting options. Maybe they get lucky and Cespedes or Upton ends up being dealt cheap?
because my second choice after Gomez at least for CF was Parra and that clearly isn't happening now after all the finger pointing and likely bad blood between the two teams.
Cespedes would wipe the bad taste out of my mouth real quick however. Sandy ended his press conference with "Its not Friday afternoon yet". He's going to be busy tomorrow I think.
Gomez really was a great fit from a position/contract standpoint. I guess you just have to trust the doctors on this one even though his MRI's were all supposedly clean. His athleticism is what made him dynamic. Upton or Cespedes would have just as much impact this year, but they're likely pure rentals and you're likely sending Conforto back down.
Crisp or Davis are the kinds of speedy/pesky vets who could be similar to Aoki for KC last year. Hit .275, steal some bases, tough to strike out, etc. Definitely don't have the dynamic presence of Gomez, but also won't cost much and they'd keep Conforto in the fold. Maybe they take another run at Reddick or Bruce?
loose their edge more quickly than others. Jason Bay was an example of that. I'm glad we didn't trade for Gomez - not at that price. And I hope that management is careful over the next couple of days.
since Gomez was such a good fit and i really liked that trade. That said its tough to trade a guy like Wheeler for a guy that you have some injury concern with.

Especially when he is a pending UFA. If the situation deteriorates and he needs surgery, you get no value. If he decides in the offseason to have surgery so he is healthy for UFA, you get no value. And he's a tough guy to resign, since he'll be 31 in year 1 of his new deal and he's a Boras client.
I think Wilmer is a better hitting middle infielder than Gomez is a CF. I personally wouldn't agree to trade Flores for Gomez straight up at this point in their respective careers, let alone throwing in Wheeler (who I think dealing now would be a case of selling low instead of selling high).

My admittedly amateurish two cents...
Gomez's numbers aren't blowing Flores numbers out. Moving out a bat and moving one in didn't solve much although some apparently believe the offense would have been greatly bolstered.
Even in a down year, Gomez OPS+ is 105 to Flores 83, with Gomez adding value on the bases and in the field. According to bWAR, Gomez was worth 1.6 WAR compared to Flores .2 WAR in 20 more games.
kind of said it all- something to the effect the deal is not going to happen and never will. Obviously something with medical records. Keith Hernandez alluded to this last night when Flores was still on the field and Keith speculated that the trade could be held up as medical records are swapped. Good for Sandy for backing out. Imagine the backlash had he completed the deal and two weeks later Gomez lands on the DL.
I get that. But outfielders are supposed to be much better hitters than middle infielders. I actually think Flores is about as good a hitter as a middle infielder as Gomez is as an outfielder.
See, this link demonstrates that OFs (particularly corner OFs, but also CFs) have notably higher OPS on average than a SS or 2B.
That said, the gap isn't big enough to equate Flores and Gomez, especially if Gomez is playing CF and Flores is playing 2B. So, even taking positions into account, Gomez is a better hitter than Flores.
But not enough better to justify throwing in Wheeler, IMO. Link - ( New Window )

Or the Brewers did.
