Time will tell. If another team grabs Gomez and says "not worried about his hip" it will be pretty damning. I'm not going to get too worked up about it until that point though. Rajai Davis and Coco Crisp are 2 interesting rental options that could be nice role players here in CF. Davis' OPS is only 50 points below Gomez and he'd bring some speed with him.

I'm sure finances played a role. Obviously if Gomez was only making peanuts like Wheeler, you might be more willing to take on the risk.
But I think the injury was the main thing. If you trade away Wheeler, you have to be thinking about the possibility of signing Gomez longterm after his contract is up.
Then again I don't blame Met fans for being suspicious about the Wilpons. They bring it on themselves. But in this case, it was probably smart to nix the trade. Wheelers injury has a high recovery rate. Not so with hips.

It's clearly affecting his performance though. He's playing, but he's not himself.
It's irresponsible to trade for damaged goods, especially when that player is having a down season, and his game is centered around his legs.
There's 33% of the season left, meaning his cost for the rest of this season is under $3M. They just saved almost $2M on Mejia's unexpected suspension. If $3M blew up this trade MLB needs to take the franchise away from the Wilpons (though they should have done that long ago).
Right now i'm judging based on actions not words. Since Gomez said his hip bothered him he's stolen the same number of bases as Cadaver on 1 leg. I'm interested to see if another team gives up something comparable for Gomez and says "all clear" as that obviously changes thing.

Eric it is so obvious that this is about $$$.. Deal was done and the owners killed it once they realized they had to take on Gomez contact.

The more details I get on nixed Gomez trade, the more it sounds as if it became more financial matter than medical matter. Anyone surprised?
I'm sure finances played a role. Obviously if Gomez was only making peanuts like Wheeler, you might be more willing to take on the risk.
But I think the injury was the main thing. If you trade away Wheeler, you have to be thinking about the possibility of signing Gomez longterm after his contract is up.
Then again I don't blame Met fans for being suspicious about the Wilpons. They bring it on themselves. But in this case, it was probably smart to nix the trade. Wheelers injury has a high recovery rate. Not so with hips.
Time will tell. If another team grabs Gomez and says "not worried about his hip" it will be pretty damning. I'm not going to get too worked up about it until that point though. It's clearly affecting his performance though. He's playing, but he's not himself.
It's irresponsible to trade for damaged goods, especially when that player is having a down season, and his game is centered around his legs.
Right now i'm judging based on actions not words. Since Gomez said his hip bothered him he's stolen the same number of bases as Cadaver on 1 leg. I'm interested to see if another team gives up something comparable for Gomez and says "all clear" as that obviously changes thing.
And 6 were in the first 2 months of the season, despite his hamstring injury, prior to complaining about his hip.
