Now that is over, lost was Lucas hitting 3 so I think the prior 3 were an indication this is the start of Duda go time and hoping he carries it through the end of the season whenever that is. What will the next 36 hours bring?
It's been just full of ups and downs, crazy twists and turns and just when you think you know how things are going to go, giant rubber spiders fall from the ceiling when you least expect it. Sorry, bit of mixed metaphor there.
Anyway, at least it hasn't been boring. We've played 101 games, we're 3 games over .500 and two games out of first. It's nearly August and you don't have to be delusional to think we might actually play a postseason game or two.
I know this drama has been a little rough on us, but what kind of Mets season would it be without drama?
TDA is coming back. Duda knocked three round-trippers last night. Things are looking up.
stenosis would be putting them in position of holding their breath every game going forward that they both could go down. They would be screwed
and couldn't afford to replace both. I commend them for going for Gomez, but you can't be in a waiting for the other shoe to drop health wise for your 2 best offensive players
The cool move on to next guy. Now They cant trade wilmer since Sandy apologized to him and cant picture that happening again. Mets fans will all love the guy now. Hopefully he goes with and gets going and doesnt let it get to him anymore.
Fuck the brewers either way. More for backing out of parra than this
Just when you think your problems are solved. Now we have a gaping hole in our lineup still. Corner OF makes no sense we need a CF and CF only.
Gomez wouldn't have solved all he problems. Lost in the chaos is the team managed only two hits besides Duda's huge night. They had five hits in all and one bat added wouldn't have solved all the problems.

Gomez alone wouldn't solve all of the problems, but Gomez + d'Arnaud + Wright would go a long way to making this lineup legit.
other teams might not see him as their future ace. So Wheeler might not be the one to go.I mean what does it say about Wheeler that the Brewers see him as an ace and yesterday here he was number 5.
My concern was that perhaps something came up in Wheeler's medical that said he wasn't healing properly or that he wasn't on track for full recovery which would have been a blow for two reasons (can't move him and could complicate his future here if he stays)
but why does get as hot as Duda this week, yet he can go just as cold for 6 weeks? I get that it is part mental, confidence, changing your swing, but not being able to maintain or just going the other way and can't turn it around always fascinated me

Duda seems like he might have a bit of Mike Pelfrey in him. He's so inconsistent, and when he's slumping, people talk about confidence issues.
Mechanics start a slump and the mind keeps you there
but every streaky player in any sport? Injury is understandable, but other than injury a player is playing through, I'm trying to figure out hot streaks and cold streaks for as long as I'm watching sports
the trade talk distracted me from another Colon game that was over before the 3rd inning ended. Are we really going to trot that turd out there every 5 days in a pennant race?
Whether you prefer Verret or Gee, we need someone else taking starts until Matz comes back. The race is just too close to throw away games.
It'll be interesting to see if Gomez still gets moved now and for what type of package.
I'm curious too. What his value after a desperate team passes on him?
I hadn't see this quote from Gomez about his hip before:
"I've been afraid to run like I can because I've been apprehensive. I don't want to aggravate it. So, the trainers have been trying to take care of it. They want to see me play, enjoy the game, run and make things happen."
my guess is it reduces his price to that of a rental if he gets traded now. Most likely MIL holds onto him until the offseason if that's the case.
Will be interesting to see which direction Alderson turns. Judging by their reaction to his surprise trade, I think Tulo had been their #1 target. The very next day they aggressively went after the 2nd best fit out there which was Gomez and had a deal completed on a pretty simple 2 man package. Not sure who the next good fit is out there, if there is one. 3 team with Detroit for Puig would make it all better...
would be interested in Wheeler/Flores but I don't think the Dodgers would trade Puig/Price straight up. Not sure what we'd have to add to the package to have it make sense.
another GM saw what the Mets were willing to part with and comeback to them with if not a Gomez when healthy caliber player then with a couple of players that would be close in value to a healthy Carlos Gomez
with Gomez's 2015 season. Red flags everywhere. The guys numbers are down across the board. Really happy Sandy did his due diligence here. Screw the Brewers for trying to pull a fast one on us.
I think fans are so spoiled by the "big 4" they fail to see how good Wheeler can still be. Not everyone develops at a rocket pace their first year in the league. There was a lot of positives looking at Wheeler's 2014 season.
Looking at Gomez's season and now knowing that injuries were playing a part, he wouldn't have been much of an upgrade anyway. He can take his 8 homeruns and zero speed and declining defense back to Milwaukee.
I don't think there was anything nefarious going on here
No. But its clear Gomez knew about his hip condition and has even admitted its bad enough to where he's scared to even run.
Sure. Lets trade one of the most talented young pitchers in baseball under control until 2020 for a guy who's game is based on speed who cant run. Screw that.
Well, yeah, but we didn't have all the information we do now.
in some corners are now blaming the Wilpon's for realizing how much Gomez will cost and used the hip as an excuse. Show the fans you are willing to spend but don't actually spend. a little cynical, no?
Story/rumor/whatever breaks, the fans are giving a standing ovation, the player is crying and Manager has no idea what's happening while the GM doesn't even bother to give him a heads up as to what is happening.
I don't think the Mets are at fault on this one. Whoever reported the trade was finalized, and the beat writers and other sports journalists who piled as if it was a sure thing are to blame. Mets didn't make a trade, why did alderson need to interrupt a game to tell terry he DIDN'T make a trade. Now he has to tell his manager ever non trade he makes? If the parra trade that wasn't was leaked, we're in the same situation, except that isn't leaked. The manager, team, should be completely focused on the game, if something happens, then it happens, but nothing happened, other than a twiter hysteria. Journalists are to blame on this one, sorry.
Collins can plead ignorance all he wants but when you have a kid crying on the field you have to do something to extinguish the situation. Talk about having no feel for your team.. christ. The guy thinks this kid, who thinks he's heading to Milwaukee and has all kinds of things on his mind now is fit to be in the middle of a ball game?
Take him out. You don't need anyone to tell you to do it. Just get him off the field. It was borderline criminal to just leave him out there like that.
Sandy is leaving no rock un-turned and is absolutely trying to add whatever he can. Its also clear he will do whatever it takes to improve this team, even giving up huge pieces like Wheeler if he has to. Whether something materializes or not, I dont know.... but this crap about him not doing what it takes or us not having the ability to add a player is complete horseshit.

IDK, maybe keeping the Manager in the dark while the fans are giving a standing ovation and the player is crying could have been avoided had Sandy communicated a little. Sandy taking the "hey, not my fault chaos is happening" to HIS team is comical.

Sad state of affairs when a 7-2 ballgame is a blowout

Suspicious? Why? Because he went from punch and judy .225 to .250 hitter to .280ish and 20+ dingers and now has a hip injury?

I have no idea how you would ever know he's leaving no rock unturned. Sounds like something you just want to believe because yay Mets!
So you believe no one in the dugout had any idea whatsoever what was going on? 23 year old Wilmer Flores was just getting standing ovations from the entire crowd for no reason at all?
None of his teammates saw him tearing up or noticed that he was shaken up?
I don't care if it comes from Alderson or Collins, I just thought it was wrong to leave him out there like that with the cameras all over him. It's not like he was helping the team at that point.. he doesn't even think he's wearing the uniform again today.
There has to be better communication and the manager has to have a better feel for what's going on.
@Haudricourt
The more details I get on nixed Gomez trade, the more it sounds as if it became more financial matter than medical matter. Anyone surprised?

Because he has been attached to just about every single player remotely believed to be available. He also agreed to a trade for Carlos Gomez last night. The deal fell through because of Gomez's hip. I wouldn't put that on Sandy. Maybe I'm blind but it 100% appears to me Sandy is feverishly trying to improve this roster.

surprise me if Sandy had the deal done and the Wilpons panicked because they didn't want to even add Gomez' modest contract. Until I see the team take any payroll on, I'll believe most of what I hear about the Wilpons since payroll has been gutted for half a decade now.
The good news is that there's still 30 hours for ownership to improve the team.
"Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia's second failed drug test came during his first suspension, ESPN's T.J. Quinn is reporting. That means that the relief pitcher was still using steroids prior to the expiration of his initial 80-game suspension that began on Opening Day 2015." Stupid is as Stupid does - ( New Window )

What if the Steriods were still in his system after the first time he got popped. I wonder if he could challenge this since the tests were so close together.

Sure. Probably figured he could get away with it during the suspension pitching back home. Dumbass.

But at the end of the day, it was still us who pulled out of a deal. We've heard the Mets "close" or "attached" to how many players over the years?
Sandy thought he had Upton before he went to ATL. They asked about Simmons, too. They thought they could get Tulo. They had a deal for Gomez done. None of these players are Mets. Seems like quite a pattern.
Unless his hip is falling apart, they should have just done it
the guy is playing every day and performing. If it's an obvious surgical repair that will be happening in the next 6 months they did the right thing, if not they should have just gone forward with it. There are no guarantees with anything in life, he's playing every day right now, and this deal was as much about next year as anything. If there's no good 'plan B', they just gave up a chance at the cheapest all star CF'er out there for an injured guy and a bench player without any options.
Time will tell. If another team grabs Gomez and says "not worried about his hip" it will be pretty damning. I'm not going to get too worked up about it until that point though. Rajai Davis and Coco Crisp are 2 interesting rental options that could be nice role players here in CF. Davis' OPS is only 50 points below Gomez and he'd bring some speed with him.

Eric it is so obvious that this is about $$$.. Deal was done and the owners killed it once they realized they had to take on Gomez contact.

I'm sure finances played a role. Obviously if Gomez was only making peanuts like Wheeler, you might be more willing to take on the risk.
But I think the injury was the main thing. If you trade away Wheeler, you have to be thinking about the possibility of signing Gomez longterm after his contract is up.
Then again I don't blame Met fans for being suspicious about the Wilpons. They bring it on themselves. But in this case, it was probably smart to nix the trade. Wheelers injury has a high recovery rate. Not so with hips.

It's clearly affecting his performance though. He's playing, but he's not himself.
It's irresponsible to trade for damaged goods, especially when that player is having a down season, and his game is centered around his legs.
There's 33% of the season left, meaning his cost for the rest of this season is under $3M. They just saved almost $2M on Mejia's unexpected suspension. If $3M blew up this trade MLB needs to take the franchise away from the Wilpons (though they should have done that long ago).
Right now i'm judging based on actions not words. Since Gomez said his hip bothered him he's stolen the same number of bases as Cadaver on 1 leg. I'm interested to see if another team gives up something comparable for Gomez and says "all clear" as that obviously changes thing.
TTH agreed - that's the most meaningful thing to me right now

Sure. Lets trade one of the most talented young pitchers in baseball under control until 2020 for a guy who's game is based on speed who cant run. Screw that.
Without having critical info, it's easy to debate trades.
FWIW, checked this AM, it doesn't sound like Mets are done trying to get a bat.
ONLY the Mets
Take him out. You don't need anyone to tell you to do it. Just get him off the field. It was borderline criminal to just leave him out there like that.

Secretly crushing on Winningham. Went to school 5 miles down the road from me and Ive met him over the offseason. Seems like a real nice kid.

@Haudricourt
The more details I get on nixed Gomez trade, the more it sounds as if it became more financial matter than medical matter. Anyone surprised?
Complete bullshit. lol
The good news is that there's still 30 hours for ownership to improve the team.
Stupid is as Stupid does - ( New Window )
What if the Steriods were still in his system after the first time he got popped. I wonder if he could challenge this since the tests were so close together.
Sure. Probably figured he could get away with it during the suspension pitching back home. Dumbass.

Sandy is leaving no rock un-turned and is absolutely trying to add whatever he can. Its also clear he will do whatever it takes to improve this team, even giving up huge pieces like Wheeler if he has to.

Right now i'm judging based on actions not words. Since Gomez said his hip bothered him he's stolen the same number of bases as Cadaver on 1 leg. I'm interested to see if another team gives up something comparable for Gomez and says "all clear" as that obviously changes thing.
And 6 were in the first 2 months of the season, despite his hamstring injury, prior to complaining about his hip.
