NFT: Yanks talk 7-30

superspynyg : 7/30/2015 9:50 am
Well in about 30 hours left before the trade deadline arrives. I still think that we need to add another starter and could upgrade at 2b. With Nova dealing with a tired arm (He fully expects to pitch his next scheduled start), CC not pitching well, and Pineda past the most innings he has pitched in 3 years we should protect ourselves.

I never expected Cashman to get one of the top pitchers, but I though that he would make one or two moves like last season (McCarthy and Prado). He still has time. Either way barring a complete breakdown we are headed to the playoffs.
I don't expect anything at 2B
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 9:53 am : link
There doesn't seem to be anyone available except Prado, and I'm not sure he's really an upgrade. His offense this season has been only marginally better than Drew, and he's a far inferior glove.

I'm not expecting a frontline starter. Think it's more likely to see a deal for a depth starter on the cheap, like the McCarthy trade last season. Maybe Mike Leake?
So if we get a strong pitcher....
manh george : 7/30/2015 9:54 am : link
what the heck do they do with CC? He is almost certainly useless in relief, and will rapidly become a dead weight in a roster spot.
mop up duty and spot starter
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 9:55 am : link
He'll fill the same role on the roster that Capuano did.
Acquiring Leake and demoting CC:
Victor in CT : 7/30/2015 9:57 am : link
Taking a Leake and a dump at the same time. :-)
btw, no one's really talked about this
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:06 am : link
But it's odd to see the Cardinals panic and deal a top-100 pitching prospect for Brandon Moss, who has absolutely sucked this year. I get that they're desperate for an outfielder, but that's a really awful deal.

Incredibly awful
Cards are loaded with pitching prospects
arniefez : 7/30/2015 10:20 am : link
Moss was 119 OPS + last year and is a free agent. Holiday may be done for the year and their offense has been horrible.
since Randal thinks it was a good trade
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:22 am : link
I feel reassured that it was awful.
I think
kash94 : 7/30/2015 10:22 am : link
a team will outbid us for the front-end pitchers.

Not sure if any updates happened in the past 12 hours with regards to Matt Latos, but I would try pursuing that if it fell through.

Latos, the pick, Morse, and cash for two lower end prospects. DFA Jones in place of Morse.

But yea I have a feeling the most the Yankees get is a utility infielder (like a Prado or Zorbrist) and/or a mid-backend starter.
Look at Moss' OPS+ trend
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:27 am : link
162, 136, 119, 91, and he's a lousy glove. As Dan mentioned in the other thread, comparable players like David DeJesus and David Murphy were traded for virtually nothing - why pay through the nose for Moss?
I haven't been able to follow
batman11 : 7/30/2015 10:29 am : link
what's happening as closely as I would like. Is Samardzija still available? Is he a possibility for the Yanks?
I think because Holiday got hurt yesterday
arniefez : 7/30/2015 10:30 am : link
so everyone knows they're desperate.
How
mitch300 : 7/30/2015 10:37 am : link
about just bringing up Serevino? He did have a 10 stike out game yesterday. Yeah I know it was in AAA. Still why see what we have with him. IT's not like he's been in A or AA.
Besides getting Price I don't see anyone out there that is gonna make a difference than what we have now. Plus we don't have to give up ANYONE in our system.
I don't think the White Sox are going to trade Samardzija
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:40 am : link
With the Twins collapsing, they still have a shot at the playoffs.
The biggest issue with Severino is innings
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:42 am : link
He's already thrown 99 this year and last year he threw 113. I doubt the Yankees would let him throw more than 140-150.
SP is a major need right now
illmatic : 7/30/2015 10:44 am : link
They have to do something there if they're serious about making a WS run. I'm not too interested in Leake though.

But what is Cashman's obsession with Dustin Ackley? I feel like we've heard about trade rumors involving him for years now. If they trade for him as the 2B solution, I'll want to go into hulk mode and break something. Ackley sucks. Can you imagine if they traded for Ackley and just left Refsnyder in the minors. That would be some nonsense.
heh - did you just check RAB too?
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:47 am : link
I was coming here to say the same thing - I don't get the strange obsession with Ackley. He's terrible.
Not sure if mentioned
Kyle in NY : 7/30/2015 10:48 am : link
but Pinstripe Alley floated the idea of Nova being involved in a deal for a pitcher like Price. Might be attractive to Detroit who's not looking to totally rebuild. And it could keep Severino, Judge, and Bird out of a deal. Nova + Sanchez + one other piece? I'd do that, provided there's an extension window.

Haha, I haven't checked there but I should.

And I really think Nova is a goner if and when they add another SP. I think they would absolutely move him so they can keep CC in the rotation.
I'd absolutely do that
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:51 am : link
There's a real chance Nova could stay healthy and make you regret dealing him, but he's just not reliable.
Thanks
mitch300 : 7/30/2015 10:52 am : link

Same shit happens in relation to the Jets/Giants talk there, as well. It's a joke in both cases. Fuck those teams.
Ackley's career numbers are bad enough as it is
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:59 am : link
But if you leave out his rather good rookie stats, here's what he's done since 2011:

394 games, 1679 ABs, .236/.298/.359. He can't hit. What's the attraction?

I am surprised they are off of their deflated balls subject.

On par with Drew but younger?
Drew has some power and is the superior defender
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 12:01 pm : link
What I don't understand is why you'd trade for Ackley but won't give Refsnyder an opportunity. I doubt he hits any worse than Ackley, and he won't cost anything since he's already in the system.
Even though he had a rough night last night
arniefez : 7/30/2015 12:04 pm : link
the way Didi has rebounded from his lousy start has vindicated Cashman's teams evaluation of him. The guy he gave up for Didi has busted out and young SS's are hard to find. So kudos to Cashman for Didi and Shreve. Eovaldi has done what they acquired him to do start every 5th day and keep them in games. Wilson has been good out of the pen too. Young has been shockingly good against LH pitching. The good out weighing the bad so far for most of the off season moves and it sure didn't look that way in mid May. So kudos for staying the course to Cashman and mostly good moves. It's been a terrific season so far. But he seems to have a blind spot for bad LH 2B's. First Drew and now a younger version of Drew in Ackley? Although only 27 years old and last year 99 OPS +. Much better on the road than at home and way better vs RH pitching than LH. Maybe he thinks getting him out of Safeco and away from the Mariners might fix him?
Ackley
kash94 : 7/30/2015 12:06 pm : link
makes no sense minus his ability to play multiple positions. It's not even like he does this at a high rate.

They apparently rejected a deal for Flores? If they honestly want more than them there's no way they should continue to pursue.

Also you can't even make the Safeco Field argument with him as he's hitting better at home this season I think - he's just not a very good player.
Ackley's career home/road splits aren't much different
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 12:07 pm : link
.243/.301/.360 at home, .243/.310/.372 on the road. Either way, not worth bothering with.

Update on David Price

Toronto is the team malking the big push before 4pm tomm.
Houston, Dodgers and Yankees
The 12th Man : 7/30/2015 12:29 pm : link
still in it but Toronto is the team making the biggest push.

Padres also looking to unload 4 to 5 players over the next 24 hours.
Toronto amuses me
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 12:31 pm : link
There's no way in hell Price is going to re-sign with them, and the cost is going to be fairly steep anyway with so many teams in the bidding. If they manage to outbid the Dodgers, it will be because they're gutting their farm system to do it. So, in the end, they'll be throwing everything into this season, when they're sitting at .500 at the end of July. That's some ace strategy there.
Yanks pitching
PaulN : 7/30/2015 12:38 pm : link
Could be a huge mess very soon, so I also think they will add a pitcher like Leake, and I think they will use Nova to go get him. I also think they will add a bullpen arm so that they can put Warren back into the rotation if needed, and I also see them calling up Severino, I think these are the type moves the yanks will make and should make. If you think about it, I am not confident at all in Nova being effective down the stretch, I also have little confidence that both Tanaka and Pineda will also make it, and would be thrilled if one of them make it, and we must replace Sabathia. So wee could be looking at a rotation of Tanaka, Leake, Eovaldi, Warren, and Pineda or Sabathia. I would be Ok with a top 4 like that.
Severino might make one or two appearances
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 12:40 pm : link

Surprising that the Dodgers didn't top this deal, as they easily have the resources to do so.

I have a feeling the Dodgers and Yankees are serious about not parting with their top prospects. Toronto was willing to do that and Norris is a legit number 1 prospect. I'm more surprised that Houston didn't top that.

arniefez : 7/30/2015 1:02 pm : link
why cap his innings in a year you have a chance to win the World Series? Especially since there is zero correlation to innings and arm injuries. If they refuse to trade him why not use him? If they call him up now he makes what 10 starts? 60 innings? That's such a big deal?
let em try
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 1:03 pm : link
They're still not a great team by any stretch of the imagination. They have 60 games to make up 7. If the Yankees go 31-31 to finish the season, Toronto has to go 37-23 to catch them. They have to morph from a .500 team to a .620 team overnight. Does adding Price and Tulowitzki do that? Maybe, but the odds are against them.

Assuming Baltimore can't catchup, Blue Jays would have to go like 38 and 22 down the stretch and Yankees would have to go 31 and 31 for them to catch up which would be tough but maybe doable now.

I think Blue Jays are hoping they can get the wild card and now with an ace like Price, win the playoff game and go from there.

because two of those guys don't seem to be very good at all. Toronto hasn't made the playoffs since 1993. Seems like they're trying to change that. While the Yankees are trying to reduce payroll directed from ownership and prove they can build a farm system so the GM can "write his own story". One team is trying to win this year. One team has other longer term priorities. When the Yankees had a big financial advantage to buy up IFA's they didn't do it. Now that prospects are totally over valued the Yankees are holding on to theirs. Hopefully some of these golden prospects become at least every day players.

Who knows - no one expecting anything from Greene last year either, and then they were all pissed when he was traded.

Which, in retrospect, is hilarious.
I think Eovaldi
RasputinPrime : 7/30/2015 2:21 pm : link
is set to take off. He keeps working on that split-finger pitch and the more he throws it, the better the results. He may be a solid number 3 for us. That really just means we need to keep Tanaka and Pineda healthy and manage the rest. For me, to do that, adding a solid back-end reliever would go a long way.

Many in industry sense #Yankees are poised to strike. Looking into all available arms, as they always do. Generally a team that moves late.

Pineda has Grade 1 forearm strain. Same as Miller, who missed a month. Being put on DL, but #Yankees feel he will pitch again this yr

Well we will find out just how deep the system is over the next month either because they step up or because we use them to acquire someone today to step up.
wonder if they get in on a guy like Iwakuma
Stu11 : 7/30/2015 2:39 pm : link
he's been not great this year, and was hurt early but he's been a real solid pitcher for 2 years prior to this in Seattle. Leake is another guy to look at as has been mentioned. The Mariners are an interesting team to watch over the next 24 hours. Is pretty much anyone not named King Felix,Cruz or Taijuan Walker on the block?

the last decade. True much of the time they haven't had the prospects to compete on the trade market. They do now however and he's being prudent. People would say it's a no brainer to throw guys like Warren/Mitchell out there but you have to decide is the guy you are getting really more helpful than them right now? Warren has been pretty damn effective this year.
Exactly. The problem is that marginal difference in effectiveness
BeerFridge : 7/30/2015 3:21 pm : link
between Mitchell/Warren and a trade target is very expensive in terms of prospects.
I know it's not a sexy move, but...
LarmerTJR : 7/30/2015 3:32 pm : link
trade for a decent reliever, move Warren back to being a starter, and roll the dice...

Seems like an only slightly better version of Drew who can also play some left field, which we don't really need. And what happens with Drew?

#Yankees were going to have 40-man roster crunch with LH-hit OFs/RH rlvrs this winter, so Flores/Ramirez depart #Mariners
.
Dave in Hoboken : 7/30/2015 4:36 pm : link
Joel Sherman ‏@Joelsherman1 3m3 minutes ago
Bet #Yankees see Ackley as change of scenery guy whose LH swing plays at Yankee Stadium. #Mariners
neither Flores nor Ramirez has much trade value
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 4:36 pm : link
But seriously, TWO players for a festering pile of dung like Ackley?
they can stuff that change of scenery up their asses
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 4:37 pm : link
Safeco isn't why his numbers suck - he's actually much worse on the road this year. His numbers suck because HE SUCKS. He can't fucking hit.
So instead of getting a legit upgrade at second
illmatic : 7/30/2015 4:38 pm : link
we'll see Ackley splitting time with Drew there instead. And Refsnyder won't get another chance at 2B until next year... maybe. You never know with the way this franchise handles minor leaguers. This really pisses me off.
FYI.
Pego61 : 7/30/2015 4:39 pm : link
Ackley at Yankee Stadium: 17 games, .296/.397/.481, 2 HR, 9 RBI.

Probably means nothing. I don't get it, but neither Flores nor Ramirez had a future here. We just have so many outfield and relief prospects.

Not sure how Ackley fits on current roster unless #Yankees have injury haven't announced or trade lined up for someone like Garrett Jones
I'll bet you anything this means Refsnyder is gone in a trade for a

pitcher. Makes no sense otherwise. It still doesn't make much sense from the standpoint that Ackley is utterly worthless, but that's beside the point.
Ackley
DanMetroMan : 7/30/2015 4:39 pm : link
changed his swing at some point last year and was AWESOME... then sucked again.

the priorities have changed. It's actually a better business plan. But I hope they're right about the talent level of the guys they're insisting on keeping. From Sherman:

[quoteThe Yankees were faced with the question of how much to strip of that for 12 starts of Price, plus the postseason. Steinbrenner has quarantined Aaron Judge, Greg Bird and Luis Severino at Triple-A and A-ball shortstop Jorge Mateo who just might be the Yankees best prospects. And executives from other teams say Cashman is being protective of even more than that. The idea is not to be so gung-ho for a title now that you damage your near future.[/quote]

RasputinPrime : 7/30/2015 4:47 pm : link
Ackley will hackley.

Sad to see a guy like Flores go but he didn't have upside to do more than play AAA for us. Ramirez just wasn't able to harness his stuff.

Fine with the deal. Maybe Ackley helps and he didn't cost anything.

Can't see Ackley splitting time with Drew as they are both LH hitters. Splitting time with Ryan, yes. Which leaves Drew exactly where?
Ackley has also barely played 2B in the past two seasons
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 4:53 pm : link

Ackley can play 1st & OF
arniefez : 7/30/2015 4:54 pm : link
It might be Jones who is going.
The Mariners
arniefez : 7/30/2015 4:56 pm : link
brought in a big contract guy to play 2B so Ackley was pushed out. They only owe that guy 194 million after this year.
Ackley
kash94 : 7/30/2015 4:57 pm : link
doesn't really bring much but I'm more interested in how they'll make room for him. DFA Jones probably makes the most sense
man, Garrett Jones sucks!
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 4:59 pm : link
Let's bring in someone hitting just as poorly to replace him!
It's possible
kash94 : 7/30/2015 5:00 pm : link
Cashman sees Ackley more of a 1B/OF bench guy than a 2b considering how few games he's played there recently. Hope this is the case as I'm not sure why Refsnyder isn't being given a shot.
His numbers are terrible as a 2B
illmatic : 7/30/2015 5:04 pm : link
They're absolutely god awful as an OF. I have no idea what he's trying to do with Ackley or why he has wanted him so badly for like the past three years now. Flores would have been better as a fifth OF if that's what he's supposed to be. Drew, as crazy as it is to say, is probably a better overall 2B than Ackley is/would be. Garrett Jones pretty much has the same stats as him if he's supposed to be the new backup 1B. And Jones has played a lot more 1B than Ackley has. I think Ackley has only played there... 17 times in his career. I just don't get it.

Ackley played some 1B in college, I believe, but he is a right-handed fielder so I don't see the attraction to playing him at 1B in MLB. Jones despite his flaws is at least a decent defensive 1B.
Girardi on the FAN
davek3698 : 7/30/2015 5:09 pm : link
said he wont be played as the primary 2nd baseman, but rather all of the field. Still likes Drew there.
nothing like a first baseman that can't hit!

Few other notes/thoughts
kash94 : 7/30/2015 5:15 pm : link
-Forgot that Andrew Bailey is on the Yankees recovering from surgery in AA right now. Perhaps an option for the bullpen down the stretch.

-Nick Goody and Bryan Mitchell being called up to replace Pineda and Moreno (I think?). Yankees suddenly now have 2 new relievers and a new starter last few days.

Cotham was mainly relieving at SWB, and Moreno was mainly starting, so maybe Moreno replaces Pineda in the rotation.

We'll talk to Girardi soon, but I'm told by someone that the plan is to use Ackley at second base. Hmmm. Perhaps Drew is on the move?
I'd guess the Yankees see Ackley
RasputinPrime : 7/30/2015 6:39 pm : link
as their Brock Holt. We are going to need two utility players who can be plugged in all over of the field as we get into the second half of the season. At least Young continues to make it easy to give Beltran a rest against LHP.
Bailey

promoted to AAA. Maybe he could reach the MLB in 2 weeks or so?

He's been pretty meh to awful last two years (2012 + 2013) but has apparently looked excellent so far and was great in 2009 and 2010 - let's see.
