NFT: Yanks talk 7-30

superspynyg : 7/30/2015 9:50 am
Well in about 30 hours left before the trade deadline arrives. I still think that we need to add another starter and could upgrade at 2b. With Nova dealing with a tired arm (He fully expects to pitch his next scheduled start), CC not pitching well, and Pineda past the most innings he has pitched in 3 years we should protect ourselves.

I never expected Cashman to get one of the top pitchers, but I though that he would make one or two moves like last season (McCarthy and Prado). He still has time. Either way barring a complete breakdown we are headed to the playoffs.

I don't expect anything at 2B
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 9:53 am : link
There doesn't seem to be anyone available except Prado, and I'm not sure he's really an upgrade. His offense this season has been only marginally better than Drew, and he's a far inferior glove.

I'm not expecting a frontline starter. Think it's more likely to see a deal for a depth starter on the cheap, like the McCarthy trade last season. Maybe Mike Leake?
So if we get a strong pitcher....
manh george : 7/30/2015 9:54 am : link
what the heck do they do with CC? He is almost certainly useless in relief, and will rapidly become a dead weight in a roster spot.
mop up duty and spot starter
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 9:55 am : link
He'll fill the same role on the roster that Capuano did.
Acquiring Leake and demoting CC:
Victor in CT : 7/30/2015 9:57 am : link
Taking a Leake and a dump at the same time. :-)
btw, no one's really talked about this
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:06 am : link
But it's odd to see the Cardinals panic and deal a top-100 pitching prospect for Brandon Moss, who has absolutely sucked this year. I get that they're desperate for an outfielder, but that's a really awful deal.

Incredibly awful
Cards are loaded with pitching prospects
arniefez : 7/30/2015 10:20 am : link
Moss was 119 OPS + last year and is a free agent. Holiday may be done for the year and their offense has been horrible.
since Randal thinks it was a good trade
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:22 am : link
I feel reassured that it was awful.
I think
kash94 : 7/30/2015 10:22 am : link
a team will outbid us for the front-end pitchers.

Not sure if any updates happened in the past 12 hours with regards to Matt Latos, but I would try pursuing that if it fell through.

Latos, the pick, Morse, and cash for two lower end prospects. DFA Jones in place of Morse.

But yea I have a feeling the most the Yankees get is a utility infielder (like a Prado or Zorbrist) and/or a mid-backend starter.
Look at Moss' OPS+ trend
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:27 am : link
162, 136, 119, 91, and he's a lousy glove. As Dan mentioned in the other thread, comparable players like David DeJesus and David Murphy were traded for virtually nothing - why pay through the nose for Moss?
I haven't been able to follow
batman11 : 7/30/2015 10:29 am : link
what's happening as closely as I would like. Is Samardzija still available? Is he a possibility for the Yanks?
I think because Holiday got hurt yesterday
arniefez : 7/30/2015 10:30 am : link
so everyone knows they're desperate.
How
mitch300 : 7/30/2015 10:37 am : link
about just bringing up Serevino? He did have a 10 stike out game yesterday. Yeah I know it was in AAA. Still why see what we have with him. IT's not like he's been in A or AA.
Besides getting Price I don't see anyone out there that is gonna make a difference than what we have now. Plus we don't have to give up ANYONE in our system.
I don't think the White Sox are going to trade Samardzija
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:40 am : link
With the Twins collapsing, they still have a shot at the playoffs.
The biggest issue with Severino is innings
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:42 am : link
He's already thrown 99 this year and last year he threw 113. I doubt the Yankees would let him throw more than 140-150.
SP is a major need right now
illmatic : 7/30/2015 10:44 am : link
They have to do something there if they're serious about making a WS run. I'm not too interested in Leake though.

But what is Cashman's obsession with Dustin Ackley? I feel like we've heard about trade rumors involving him for years now. If they trade for him as the 2B solution, I'll want to go into hulk mode and break something. Ackley sucks. Can you imagine if they traded for Ackley and just left Refsnyder in the minors. That would be some nonsense.
heh - did you just check RAB too?
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:47 am : link
I was coming here to say the same thing - I don't get the strange obsession with Ackley. He's terrible.
Not sure if mentioned
Kyle in NY : 7/30/2015 10:48 am : link
but Pinstripe Alley floated the idea of Nova being involved in a deal for a pitcher like Price. Might be attractive to Detroit who's not looking to totally rebuild. And it could keep Severino, Judge, and Bird out of a deal. Nova + Sanchez + one other piece? I'd do that, provided there's an extension window.

Haha, I haven't checked there but I should.

And I really think Nova is a goner if and when they add another SP. I think they would absolutely move him so they can keep CC in the rotation.
I'd absolutely do that
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:51 am : link
There's a real chance Nova could stay healthy and make you regret dealing him, but he's just not reliable.
Thanks
mitch300 : 7/30/2015 10:52 am : link
Greg for the info. It does put a wrench in that plan.
Nova was always terribly inconsistent
Victor in CT : 7/30/2015 10:52 am : link
though very talented.
But
illmatic : 7/30/2015 10:53 am : link
I really don't think Nova has much trade value around the league right now. I guess we'll find out soon if that's true or not.

Look at Morse numbers how is he an upgrade over Jones?? Zobrist was traded to the royals on Tuesday

It'd be awesome to hear some Yankees trade talk on WFAN, the home of the Yankees, but they've talked Mets for an entire hour now without even mentioning the Yankees. Let's see how long this lasts.

Same shit happens in relation to the Jets/Giants talk there, as well. It's a joke in both cases. Fuck those teams.
Ackley's career numbers are bad enough as it is
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 10:59 am : link
But if you leave out his rather good rookie stats, here's what he's done since 2011:

394 games, 1679 ABs, .236/.298/.359. He can't hit. What's the attraction?

BIG FRED 1973 : 7/30/2015 11:27 am : link

it is also a testiment to the Yankees success...
Drewcon40 : 7/30/2015 11:50 am : link
...I understand the frustration but the Yankees winning and not having a major need is business as usual. The Mets are usually sellers at this point. The hosts are usually Mets and Jets fans.

I am listening to the MLB channel on Sirius/XM. It's more of a national view but at least it's a variety.

I am surprised they are off of their deflated balls subject.

On par with Drew but younger?
Drew has some power and is the superior defender
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 12:01 pm : link
What I don't understand is why you'd trade for Ackley but won't give Refsnyder an opportunity. I doubt he hits any worse than Ackley, and he won't cost anything since he's already in the system.
Even though he had a rough night last night
arniefez : 7/30/2015 12:04 pm : link
the way Didi has rebounded from his lousy start has vindicated Cashman's teams evaluation of him. The guy he gave up for Didi has busted out and young SS's are hard to find. So kudos to Cashman for Didi and Shreve. Eovaldi has done what they acquired him to do start every 5th day and keep them in games. Wilson has been good out of the pen too. Young has been shockingly good against LH pitching. The good out weighing the bad so far for most of the off season moves and it sure didn't look that way in mid May. So kudos for staying the course to Cashman and mostly good moves. It's been a terrific season so far. But he seems to have a blind spot for bad LH 2B's. First Drew and now a younger version of Drew in Ackley? Although only 27 years old and last year 99 OPS +. Much better on the road than at home and way better vs RH pitching than LH. Maybe he thinks getting him out of Safeco and away from the Mariners might fix him?
Ackley
kash94 : 7/30/2015 12:06 pm : link
makes no sense minus his ability to play multiple positions. It's not even like he does this at a high rate.

They apparently rejected a deal for Flores? If they honestly want more than them there's no way they should continue to pursue.

Also you can't even make the Safeco Field argument with him as he's hitting better at home this season I think - he's just not a very good player.
Ackley's career home/road splits aren't much different
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 12:07 pm : link
.243/.301/.360 at home, .243/.310/.372 on the road. Either way, not worth bothering with.
This year for DA
kash94 : 7/30/2015 12:11 pm : link
Home: .252/.282/.420
Road: .149/.250/.269

He's Drew minus the fielding and power

I don't think that Severino is in the plans this year at all reguardless of how well he is doing. Next season should be the season of Severino.
Update on David Price
The 12th Man : 7/30/2015 12:27 pm : link
Toronto is the team malking the big push before 4pm tomm.
Houston, Dodgers and Yankees
The 12th Man : 7/30/2015 12:29 pm : link
still in it but Toronto is the team making the biggest push.

Padres also looking to unload 4 to 5 players over the next 24 hours.
Toronto amuses me
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 12:31 pm : link
There's no way in hell Price is going to re-sign with them, and the cost is going to be fairly steep anyway with so many teams in the bidding. If they manage to outbid the Dodgers, it will be because they're gutting their farm system to do it. So, in the end, they'll be throwing everything into this season, when they're sitting at .500 at the end of July. That's some ace strategy there.
Yanks pitching
PaulN : 7/30/2015 12:38 pm : link
Could be a huge mess very soon, so I also think they will add a pitcher like Leake, and I think they will use Nova to go get him. I also think they will add a bullpen arm so that they can put Warren back into the rotation if needed, and I also see them calling up Severino, I think these are the type moves the yanks will make and should make. If you think about it, I am not confident at all in Nova being effective down the stretch, I also have little confidence that both Tanaka and Pineda will also make it, and would be thrilled if one of them make it, and we must replace Sabathia. So wee could be looking at a rotation of Tanaka, Leake, Eovaldi, Warren, and Pineda or Sabathia. I would be Ok with a top 4 like that.
Severino might make one or two appearances
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 12:40 pm : link
But that's it. He's not going to be a significant part of the staff this year.
Price to Toronto...
Mike in St. Louis : 7/30/2015 12:47 pm : link
is apparently done...nothing yet on the return...
return is Norris, Boyd and Alford
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 12:51 pm : link
Norris is the big catch. Boyd is a meh prospect who got absolutely hammered in his brief MLB debut earlier this year. Never heard of Alford.

Surprising that the Dodgers didn't top this deal, as they easily have the resources to do so.
It is offical

I have a feeling the Dodgers and Yankees are serious about not parting with their top prospects. Toronto was willing to do that and Norris is a legit number 1 prospect. I'm more surprised that Houston didn't top that.
Welp

Adding Tulo and Price makes alot of sense.
If Severino is really a potential ace
arniefez : 7/30/2015 1:02 pm : link
why cap his innings in a year you have a chance to win the World Series? Especially since there is zero correlation to innings and arm injuries. If they refuse to trade him why not use him? If they call him up now he makes what 10 starts? 60 innings? That's such a big deal?
let em try
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 1:03 pm : link
They're still not a great team by any stretch of the imagination. They have 60 games to make up 7. If the Yankees go 31-31 to finish the season, Toronto has to go 37-23 to catch them. They have to morph from a .500 team to a .620 team overnight. Does adding Price and Tulowitzki do that? Maybe, but the odds are against them.
