NFT: Rocker climbers...anyone into bouldering or have tried it?

RC02XX : 7/30/2015 10:19 am
I was talking to a work colleague of mine, who is an avid climber, and he spoke to me about the concept of bouldering. As a novice climber (have climbed a few times with my friends both outdoors and in rock climbing gyms), I wasn't aware of this bouldering thing. It seems to be an awesome way for anyone interested in climbing to either start learning how to climb or for those already into climbing to work on their techniques in an easier and more convenient environment. It basically is climbing without any safety harnesses as the height is no more than two stories, which only requires some crash pads to cushion your fall.

He specifically mentioned a set of gyms in California called Vital, which appear to be half bouldering climbing gym and half Starbucks like lounge for people to hang out. He raved about the easy going atmosphere, convenience of a 24/7 access, and community-vibe that these gyms seem to provide. Unfortunately there isn't anything like it in MD, which may actually be a blessing in disguise for a business opportunity here in Annapolis.

Anyone try bouldering? Or have gone to Vital or any gyms like it?

I've only ever climbed at indoor gyms and it's both a great workout and can be a fun social activity. I like top roping better (even though i'm a bit afraid of heights) but you need a partner to belay you. The bouldering is fun and seems easier because it's lower but it's much more difficult.

In Philly there's a number of gyms. I use PRG (Philly rock gym) and really like it.

I had my coffee. It was fantastic.
I was very surprised to find there not being a single place

devoted to bouldering anywhere in Maryland. We do have Earth Trek, which is a traditional rock climbing gym with some bouldering and then there are some regular gyms with rock climbing walls. However, these places are usually expensive and not as convenient to enjoy by yourself.

The whole Vital business concept is intriguing. And with a potentially large client base near Annapolis area with fitness and adventure minded demographics (Naval Academy, Ft. Meade, etc.), I'm not sure why they haven't opened one of these places here.

Mine was more of a roping than bouldering...it's the fiber.

is great. But top roping is just as good in a very different way. I can't imagine giving one up. So that is why, I think, most gyms cater to both. You are really limiting yourself if you only have bouldering unless it is a space/height issue. But if you are just a bouldering gym, it will be hard to compete with a gym that has both.
