can we trade for Justin Upton before they resume and have him pinch hit in the bottom of the 9th for us?

who has been excellent. It was one out.

And if Gilmartin blows it or gives up a hit then everyone goes "WTF, Gilmartin? Why not go with your best arm!". Gilmartin since the all-star break 4 games 5.06 era 1.69 whip. This is ridiculously unfair criticism. If there were a clear guy (Mejia, Clippard etc), 100% fair. He had NOTHING.

Again, it was the 40 minute part that I have issue with. Tough to get warm again after such a long layoff
agreed Dan, he was 2 strikes away from a must win
Eric on Li : 7/30/2015 3:54 pm : link
can't go with a guy who got lit up in the 9th inning of a close game just last week. Especially when Familia had gotten 2 outs in 4 pitches.

I still blame the umps for stopping game mid-at bat. That was insane.
So
DanMetroMan : 7/30/2015 3:54 pm : link
it's routine for a manager to go with a reliever with 0 career saves and a 5.06 era, 1.68 whip last 4 appearances in situations like this?
Gilmartin struck out
ZGiants98 : 7/30/2015 3:54 pm : link
5 out of 6 batters yesterday. The guy has a 2.82 FIP and a 0.4 WAR in only a little over 30 innings and he seems to actually be getting better. Your right though, people would have probably been pissed either way but I dont think is customary for relievers to break mid inning for 40 minutes and come back. I think we are all just pissed off though.
The bigger Collins complaint for me
speedywheels : 7/30/2015 3:54 pm : link
was taking Niese out after less than 90 pitches. He was sailing!
Good thing they moved the fences in again

You
DanMetroMan : 7/30/2015 3:55 pm : link
go with your best pitcher. That's the bottom line. The delay was borderline but not excessive. He made the right call, Familia didn't answer the bell.

That's another story but who knows what Niese's arm is saying any given day.

forget about all of that, they should have just let Familia finish

out the atbat. I was watching the game, they could have finished the atbat. It was crappy to suspend the game 2 strikes from the (potential) win. Maybe he still gives up the hit...but he was dealing at that point. Forget everything that happened after.

Cool and 2 games ago against the Dodgers Gilmartin faced 3 batters, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs. This isn't about trashing Gilmartin either. It's about there was no "great" or clear option here. No win.
And come on with the 4 inning
ZGiants98 : 7/30/2015 3:57 pm : link
sample. Thats almost as bad as me referencing Nimmo in AAA yesterday. Giving up one run would totally skew that.

Yeah, goddam ridiculous to call it during the at-bat. What changed in the fifteen seconds the at-bat started?

The point was there was nobody "worth arguing over". It's not as if Gilmartin is Clippard or Gilmartin is Mejia. He's a solid enough extra arm who JUST had a horrible game against the Dodgers. it wasn't like Terry passed on some good option.
C'mon

It really just depends if Familia was capable of cooling down and warming back up again after a layoff. Many pitchers cant and if he is one of them, my 93 year old grandmother would have been a better option.
Like I said
ZGiants98 : 7/30/2015 4:03 pm : link
We probably would have criticized it either way. I think your right. It just sucks.
If we trade for Upton and the game has to be resumed at a later date

Will Upton have technically beat himself?
They
DanMetroMan : 7/30/2015 4:04 pm : link
almost have to consider calling up some of the "better" arms and trying them in the pen. problem is a guy like Fulmer has health issues in the past. But this can't continue.

That's really the only definitive option they should consider in the immediate future beyond trades.

Imagine he hit a walk off for US in a resumed game at a later date? LOL.. that would be bizarre and right in line with something that would happen with this team.
I thought Goedell was close to returning
ZGiants98 : 7/30/2015 4:05 pm : link
and I thought Verrett looked very good out of the pen. Replace the Torres's with these two and Im great.

After this

i see the mets trading the rights to Mejia to the Angles for Mike Trout,
and in the first inning of his first game as a Met, he gets zapped with a rogue bolt of lightening
Goeddel

But this is the kind of loss and week that sends a team into an eternal plummet.

Nats gained another game today if we lose with the possibility of increasing the lead even further this weekend. Slippery slope right now with confidence being at an all-time low.

I can't e er recall a pitcher coming back out after a significant rain delay. I'm sure it's been done, but I just can't remember ever seeing it

And obviously hindsight is 20-20

But you can't blow a 7-1 lead in a pennant race, especially against a poor hitting team like the Padres. We can all question or defend each of the pitching moves. But the point is that you can't let that happen. Not if you expect to be a contender

I despise Collins but you can't fault him for bringing Familia back in.

I can and do fault him for yanking Niese prematurely. He had another inning in him easy. The man costs his team games they should be winning. This is three games in the last 10 outings his questionable decisions have lost us a critical game in a playoff race.

There is nothing we can do about it this year but please FOR THE LOVE OF GOD replace this loser. He is holding this club back.

Also FUCK Mejia. Trade his ass for a bucket of chum.
What are the rain delay rules
Chris684 : 7/30/2015 4:10 pm : link
My Uncle in SD was saying something about the Pads broadcast explaining they might not get credit for the top of the 9th? And I don't think this is correct.

I honestly have no idea how the new rainout rules work.

"If the home team is ahead by two runs when the players are pulled off the field, but the visiting team scores two runs in the top of the next inning before the players are pulled, the game is suspended and picked up at a later date from the point when the rain came."
I
DanMetroMan : 7/30/2015 4:10 pm : link
suspect Mejia will simply be non-tendered. Hard to see anyone taking a 2 time PED guy for 3-3.25 million and giving anything up.
Call
DanMetroMan : 7/30/2015 4:11 pm : link
up Smoker and Alvarez. Why not?

My understanding is that, if suspended, the game will be resumed in the bottom of the ninth. if They never started the ninth, then the Mets would have won if they called the game.

Would be nice if the Padres just forfeited so they don't have to make the trip on an off day at the end of the season.
wouldn't surprise

me to see 3-4 Met players come out drunk after the delay
'84
Torrag : 7/30/2015 4:17 pm : link
If the makeup game has playoff implications they will be flying out there to complete the game. MLB wouldn't stand for anything less.
If
DanMetroMan : 7/30/2015 4:17 pm : link
the Padres forfeited it would be one of the lowest moments in baseball history and truly sickening and I say that as a fan of the team that would profit.

I thought in a rain out
pjcas18 : 7/30/2015 4:21 pm : link
after 5 complete innings the game reverted back to the last full inning, or in this case the 8th inning and is declared final. So it's just like Familia never pitched and the end of the 8th is the end of the game.

like some says the SD broadcast team reported.
Who else ...
Drewcon40 : 7/30/2015 4:22 pm : link
...is holding hope we can win it in the bottom of the 9th? The worst loss of the year is going to sting double because we have conceded the loss. We are going to take the field and then go through the emotions of losing again.
.
arcarsenal : 7/30/2015 4:22 pm : link
It used to be that way... the old rules would have erased what SD did in the top of the 9th and we would have won the game. Now we have to resume it
