NFT: Yankees Acquire Dustin Ackley

Jack Curry of YES Network reports that the Yankees are set to acquire Dustin Ackley from the Mariners.
Ramon Flores and Jose Ramirez will be going back to Seattle. Ackley, 27, is batting just .215/.270/.366 with six home runs and 19 RBI over 207 plate appearances this season. While he's another option for second base, he has mostly played in the outfield in 2015.

he'll be lighting up Yankees stadium and will lead the charge to a championship.

...as soon as we get a little more help for the rotation or the pen...
Ackley has been a real bust
Dave in PA : 7/30/2015 4:49 pm : link
He had some pretty decent hype a few years ago but hasn't come close to being a consistent hitter. I don't think he's played 2b in the last 2 seasons
Rather have

either going to replace Jones or.....Jones?
Seattle is a place
CromartiesKid21 : 7/30/2015 5:00 pm : link
where young promise and bats go to die. Ackley was once the #2 overall pick coming in as a polished bat drawing comparisons to a then in prime Utley.
Who knows maybe getting out of that negative environment for hitters called Safeco can light a spark?
If he is coming in
RasputinPrime : 7/30/2015 5:05 pm : link
to push Jones out then i'm fine with the swap. Jones offered zero on defense and his bat could be replaced by just about anyone. He was a shitty utility guy. Ackley is an upgrade and maybe has some upside with the change in scenery.

Not a major move but interesting provided this in no way impacts what we do at 2B.
So tell me this
blueblood'11 : 7/30/2015 5:05 pm : link

In what way is Ackley an upgrade on Jones?

he is an athletic upgrade
RasputinPrime : 7/30/2015 5:08 pm : link
and they clearly targeted him for whatever reason at least two years ago. If they see something they like then why not if it doesn't cost you anything.

Jones wasn't adding anything. Ackley will offer more versatility and the same floor. Maybe he has an upside we haven't seen since he was a rookie?

I watch lots of mariners games and Ackley isn't worse than Jones. I'm not saying he is going to be appreciably better but I get the sense that a change of scenery may do him well.

This is a minor move in any event.

Plus Ackley is a RH fielder so I don't see him at 1B. (I may be proven wrong about that.)

At this point in time you are pissing in the wind. But if for some reason or stroke of lightening he becomes the prospect everyone thought he was when drafted then I will bow to your foresight.
apparently Girardi is on the radio right now
Greg from LI : 7/30/2015 5:12 pm : link
RAB comments have Joe saying that Ackley is not going to be the second baseman, that they're going to move him around a bit. Not sure what that means.

What can I say - I like him more than most and i'm cautiously optimistic that there is a reason the Yankees have being after him for a while.

I smell a conversion to the mound upcoming..
I didn't think it was possible
illmatic : 7/30/2015 5:15 pm : link
but I think we're downgrading the bench with this trade. Apparently he's going to be a utility guy off the bench... and I'm sure Joe will work him into the lineup often for whoever he's giving the day off to at the time. I'd rather see Flores backing up an OF spot. I'd rather see Refsnyder getting time at 2B with Drew backing him up. He hasn't played much 1B in his career so I wouldn't trust him playing there. This move literally makes no sense.
He is a better bench bat and fielder
blue2 : 7/30/2015 5:17 pm : link
over Jones. They needed a left handed outfield bat that plays solid defense. There maybe some upside left and he's under team control for the next two years. I like it and the Yankees cleared one 40 man roster spot.

I just don't get it. This team needed another left handed hitter? They ran out 8 of them the other day. They can put a lefty at any position on the field.
I think we actually got worse

This, and gives them freedom to use Refsnyder as a trade chip.
There has to be another move coming after this one
The 12th Man : 7/30/2015 6:04 pm : link
Will reserve complete judgement until 4pm tomm. If they do nothing else then I am going to say WTF? Flores had a solid glove and could run when he came up. Would have rather have had him but I will wait another 22 hrs.
Girardi did say
The 12th Man : 7/30/2015 6:07 pm : link
He expects Severino could be part of the solution after his 10 k performance. He is not on the 40 man roster right now. This would open a spot for him.

We'll talk to Girardi soon, but I'm told by someone that the plan is to use Ackley at second base. Hmmm. Perhaps Drew is on the move?
So they made a move before deadline

The bat of Drew and the glove of Refsnyder! A brilliant solution .
they tried to get him last July
capone : 7/30/2015 6:48 pm : link
they like him. He played very very well in the second half last year so you could have something - you never know.

He is a Boros client. He also has a screw loose. He spend most of his winters in the upper peninsula of Michigan with is wife freezing his ass off. His family doesn't like the wife so he wont speak to them after growing up very close.

maybe a close shave, the bright lights on NY and a short porch in RF will do him some good. He has big time talent but doesn't love the game it seems.
oh, he can play all 3 OF spots
capone : 7/30/2015 6:53 pm : link
his arm is suspect for RF. he is an average 2B but hasn't taken balls there since Cano came over
I guess you swap him for Jones
Matt M. : 7/30/2015 7:06 pm : link
But, I don't get the rumor about using him at 2B. He hasn't played there in 2 years.

He also hits well in Yankee stadium
djm : 7/30/2015 8:22 pm : link
And can play multiple positions. This move strengthens the bench.
If this is the end of Garrett Jones in pinstripes I'll take it...
Dunedin81 : 7/30/2015 9:31 pm : link
their power numbers this season (in a small sample) are comparable, Jones doesn't steal bases, he is "versatile" in the sense that he sucks at multiple positions, and he is clearly topped out offensively at his age. Ackley should benefit from a change of scenery, he can play additional positions, he can steal a base or two, and he cost us two DFA candidates. And if they use this as an excuse to DFA Ryan too, even better.
Great!
Mike B from JC : 7/30/2015 9:59 pm : link
Another weak hitting 2nd baseman. Just what they need.cashman, is making the team worse not better.

Jones and Ryan are shitty bench bats who can't steal bases. Ackley is more versatile even if his performance at the plate doesn't improve and he's a better runner than either. So no, the team is not worse. Depending on what happens in the next 24 hours the bench could be significantly better.
What would you think
The 12th Man : 7/30/2015 11:51 pm : link
If the Yankees went after Dan Haren?
I was thinking more of Iwakuma
rich in DC : 7/31/2015 12:38 am : link
Experience AL SP, record of success, in his FA year. Had a pulled muscle in his side early in the year and only came back about 8 starts ago, so he does not have big numbers to run up the price.

I would think they might as well call up one of the kids and let them pitch. Haren isn't a difference maker. That's what they need at this point. He's just an okay NL starter. And I realize a difference making SP is hard to find at this point but oh well. I guess you hang onto your prospects in that case.

Iwakuma wouldn't be bad at all if he checks out medically. But I believe he has first round compensation so the Yankees would have to give up that type of talent at a minimum in order to get him. I don't know if any teams value Iwakuma that highly at this point.
So, Ackley is like a Prado who can't hit?
