NFT: Knicks dump Ledo

Waived.

Former Knicks lottery pick Michael Sweetney, selected ninth overall in 2003, will be back in New York on Saturday night, playing basketball on ESPN for a $1 million prize at Fordham’s Rose Hill Gym.
But money isn’t the only thing driving the formerly hefty Knicks power forward in this wild, new 18-and-over pickup event called “The Basketball Tournament.’’ Regaining his health and happiness is foremost.
Sweetney told The Post his NBA career was derailed because of a long and undiagnosed bout with clinical depression, causing him to eat too much and not take care of his body.
The 32-year-old only recently got professional help when he received the diagnosis. His weight still is at 320 pounds and he will wear a size 5XL jersey when he mans the post Saturday for the Baltimore-based “City of Gods.’’

surprised because of his scoring ability and decent shot, but not a lot of room for him.

Regardless though, Knicks need some guard depth and 3 point shooting...
Scott Layden ugh...

selecting an undersized center that even undersized for a PF in the NBA that was already known to suffer with weight issues. Just criminally bad management.
It was so depressing

to have to cling to the hope that guys like Sweetney and Frank Williams were building blocks for the Knicks. Or the immortal Mardy Collins.

Much easier to get excited about Zinger and Grant. Looking forward to watching them develop.
Sweetney had talent

17.2 PER as a rookie is nothing to dismiss. He could gobble up rebounds, score in the post, and draw some fouls. Basically a lesser Z-Bo. Unfortunately he was a fat fuck.

I remember wanting Kaman or failing that Ford. My feeling at the time was that it was a 4 player draft (LeBron, Darko, Melo, Bosh), with a clear 2nd tier of 3-4 (Wade, Kaman, Ford, maybe Hinrich). We had #9 and got left out.

The remaining lottery picks dont leave me wondering "what if". The first really meaningful player drafted after us was 9 picks later, David West at #18, and he didnt blossom until year 3. The other decent players who went after Sweets were well-traveled role players, including: Collison, Diaw, Perkins, Barbosa, and Josh Howard. Decent second rounders (i.e. post Lampe) were Korver, Pachulia, Bonner, and Mo Williams.

I'm told Knicks held discussions with ex-NBA shooter Sasha Vujacic.
