He's slow. And 30+. hell struggle to make the team.
We gave Harris a noce deal. I sure hope the plan is to see more of Harris at WR. I can't see making an investment like they did in Harris without seeing him on offense.
Washington also has more upside. Jones is an easy matchup at this poiint. An easy cover. Washington gives the team a matchup advantage. I would expect them to use it.
IMO, Jones doesn't make he team without a preseason injury.
He hasn't been that player for awhile even without injury. Giants thought they would sign him as a expensive slot that they would really utilize as a #1. Now they find him not only as a slot but coming off a serious knee injury. IMO, Cruz will be a cap casualty sooner than later.
RE: RE: This was posted on the other Jones thread at 6:26
He's experienced, he's familiar with many of the schemes McAdoo is running and he has to earn his spot or he gets cut. More competition is always good.
RE: RE: RE: This was posted on the other Jones thread at 6:26
He's likely good enough to be our #4 and if there's an injury be a viable replacement at #3. Actually if we lose 1-3 we NEED him for experience alone
Still the hope is Randle takes another step, CWash becomes a consistent size mismatch & RZ threat and GD develops. Have to keep Parker for the slot I guess, tho iirc OBJ does that too
IMO JJ's a lesser Randle on his downside at 31. Not sure how fast he still is tho he might be fastest outside of OBJ & VC @ 100%. Also no one but VC (maybe Parker) has playoff experience fwiw. A camp invite is worthwhile
...Jones gets cut. The chances of everything going perfectly are pretty remote.
Assuming Jones signed a qualifying deal - and it seems he did - this is the same move as the Jeromy Miles signing. Ideally, injured players bounce back, young guys step up, and the minimum-salary veteran doesn't make the team. In the meantime, though, the coordinator has a player he trusts to set a floor under a key position with a lot of uncertainty.
Maybe, just maybe, it gives the Giants, the option to PUP Cruz and give him more time to get ready?
I think it's Standard Operating Procedure to PUP any player who isn't cleared to practice today. There's no downside - it just keeps open the option of regular-season PUP. So far, there's no indication that Cruz will miss today's practice. If he does, he'll be PUP'd; but that decision has nothing to do with James Jones. Cruz still occupies a roster spot, and there are plenty of other guys to take his reps in the slot - Parker, Harris, Talley, Edwards; even Beckham will take some.
The Jones signing is probably motivated in part by uncertainty regarding Cruz's comeback, but it doesn't influence the likelihood of him being PUP'd. At most, the signing reflects a decision that has already been made to have VC start camp on PUP - and I doubt even that much is true.

What you say may be true. I look at it as a guy who occupies the 4th spot and with experience moves up a notch or two short term..His stats are meaningless(as many are imv) UNLESS he was slotted to be a 1 or 2..Harris is young and can get his reps, but as opined above, he'll be fresher for the positions that made him one of, if not, the best in the league..THAT'S where his value lies and why we signed him..Receiving would be gravy..
Beckham, Cruz, Randle and Harris. I know CW has flashed in practice and preseason, I would assume he finds a spot. Beyond that, I'd think Jones would present more value than Parker. The others have a lot to prove.
Then again, they may see Parker as "insurance" for Cruz.
and Harris still has to demonstrate what value he brings to the offense, whereas Jones already knows the system. CW is your last WR stashed based on potential, Parker is expendable if Jones performs well. Competition is a good thing.
signing of JJ but what bothers me is his yards after catch last season (2.3 Yards). At his age is he explosive enough to make a difference and make the team? I'm hoping he ends up a nice piece to our WR puzzle.
so he'll need to prove he's still got enough athletic gifts, KWALL's right in that his numbers a year ago raise questions.
I think his #'s have something to do w/being in a new offense & a young QB learning to be a pro.He did have a career high 73 catches although his 9.1 avg was a career low. At the price we're getting him, questions on Cruz,OBJ's health & his knowledge of the O, this is a no brainer!

Sure they do, but as a 4th receiver with vet/championship experience, with an OC who knows his strengths (and weaknesses) and can play to them as needed, this is a no-lose, no-brainer signing imo..If he's truly toast or close to it, we wave bye-bye and very little, if anything, is lost..
I'm not knocking the signing, if you read my prior posts
just stating he'll need to earn a roster spot, and he'll probably wind up the #4 WR on the depth chart. A potentially good add and worth bringing him in even for competition only.
Quality depth and four WRs is a good thing, perhaps he'll help compress RR's numbers ahead of extension talks.
Washington, and Recent draft pick Davis to me seem to be the 5-6 WR.
Then you have Parker, and Edwards. I hope Edwards can get stashed on PS. But other than camp compettition I just don't see the aging vet on the decline as beating out any of these young guys.
I'm just not that concerned with his numbers in Oakland..Not sure how he was used and what system was in place there..I guess we'll know, sooner, rather than later..
He is veteran depth with a proven track record in the NFL, coming to a system he is familiar with. He does not push anyone off the roster who deserves a spot. He is here to compete, and push someone off the roster if he outperforms them. That is exactly what every team tries to do in training camp - have several viable options that push each other to play better.
I am not sure how there is any downside to this signing at all. Did he get a deal that makes him un-cuttable this year?
Is Jones's lack of speed a bigger issue in an offense predicated on a three step drop? I imagine quickness is more important in this system than the prior one, which allowed for longer developing routes.
He had 666 yards & 6 TDs with a rookie QB who had no time to throw the ball & Jones was the only legit option. So he saw all of the defenses attention. My good friend is a Raiders fan so I watched a decent amount of their games. If he had a veteran QB he would have been around 900-1000 yards & 9-10 TDs.
I try to make it my business to watch all new QBs with potential in year 1..He took many a beating, yet continually brushed himself off and got back on the horse..I think this kid's gonna be a heckuva QB moving forward
If he finds the sticks on 3rd down he would be worth keeping.
It was probably worse then what Eli has been going through the last two years.
I only watched them a handful of times last year and they were awful. And to your point, they had no weapons. Our OL had streaks of decent play last year IMO.
had to groan the minute we signed Dwayne Harris. Don't they do the exact same thing? With Harris being bigger, stronger, faster and more highly compensated?
Harris backs up Cruz, with Washington and James Jones vs. Geremy Davis outside.
I think people on BBI value Washington a lot more than the staff

Yet you felt compelled to make a new thread about it 5 minutes later? Would checking on that thread first really have been that hard?
Thank God Speedy Wheels is here to police these things! What we would do without you??
So you are coming to the defense of an attention whore - good for you!

Excuse me? How about you go fuck yourself?

I thought he was over rated in Green Bay......but a prove it deal makes perfect sense
All the other reasons listed are legit but for me this is just about surrounding Eli with as many weapons as possible.
When Eli has the necessary tools he gets the job done.
This is arguably the best group of offensive talent he has had in his career and I wager the results will show this season.
Zero risk signing. Could be a decent contributor.
glad to hear it!

Question if NYG considering using 4 WR sets more frequently would they keep 7? Don't know how they could without being thin someplace else.

LOL! My sentiments exactly though I'm sure he bring needed depth.
Ben Edwards to IR is my guess.
