NFT: Yanks talk: Trade deadline final day

superspynyg : 7/31/2015 8:50 am
Yanks still trying to work a deal for Kimbrel. Why????? We do not need a closer! We have 2 good back end guys. We need a starter. This would be a slap in the face to both Miller an Betances. You don't trade doe the games best closer to make him a set up guy.

If this trade happens And all we wind up with is
Kimbrel and a crpy utility fielder Ackely, I will be very disappointed in the Yanks front office.

Jmosis : 7/31/2015 1:29 pm : link
So can someone explain to me what the gameplan would be for a Miller/Kimbrel/Betances bullpen?

I'm not someone who worships the 9th inning, instead I think that teams would often be better suited to put out their best reliever in the 8th inning, for instance if the 8th inning pitcher faces the 3-4-5 hitters and the 9th could likely be the 7-8-9 hitters.

So I'm not coming at this from a "you have two closers, but there's only one 9th inning, what will you do!" perspective. I just can't see why you'd need an extra 70IP of 2.00 ERA relief available on top of the 150IP you already have, instead of looking to shore up other spots.

They have burnt out Betances and Miller. They need more solid back-end arms. How that would be juggled would be interesting because it wouldn't be an easy clubhouse issue.

I agree. Which is a red flag as to why a team like the Marlins would look to trade him. Doesn't make sense. He's arbitration eligible, so he'll get a raise, but not that much. There were worries about something in his delivery when he was with the Mariners, so maybe a medical issue and they are getting out before something goes wrong.

The issue with Carter Capp is his Hip-Step delivery where he is well off the mound when he throws the ball. He has been called for illegal pitches a few times in the minors. I worry that it could be a big issue in the majors. Carter Capp's delivery video - ( New Window )

oh, it's *that* guy? He pitched against us a month or so ago. I think that delivery is illegal. How is it different from just pitching 18 inches closer to the plate?

MLB has reviewed the delivery and it's been deemed ok. Unless they change the rules, he won't have a problem.
What MLB said, was that it is legal as long as he drags his toe on the ground. If you look at the videos, he clearly does not do that, as he sort of leaps forward and then throws. I think if he continues to be successful, teams will start challenging it.

Why? He could flame out of the league in a year. Until this becomes a trend or someone explains the science behind why this gives him an unfair advantage I say leave it be.
Cubs just got the guy

I would have liked to see in pinstripes Dan Haren. Quality WHIP keeps you in the game and will go at least 6 innings.
Science behind it?
Walt in MD : 7/31/2015 1:46 pm : link
The ball is released about 18 inches closer to the plate and he's jumping at the batter, which must be a distraction. I don't know that there needs to be any scientific study done on the guy. If he threw normally, he wouldn't have that strikeout rate, that's for sure.

Also only he and Buehrle have over 30 starts in each of the last 10 years. He is also third all-time in BB-to-K rate (after Pedro and Schilling). He was a solid pickup a few years ago. Very much on the end of his career though.

Ok. But can anyone else do what he is doing? Is he putting so much strain on his arm/shoulder/elbow/knees that there is actually a good reason no one else is trying it?

Don't get me wrong - I don't want to see ML cricket here but has Walden being doing something similar for years without anything coming of it? Now that he sucks n' all....
Agreed

I doesn't seem sustainable, but I dont know how long he's been pitching that way. Very gimicky. It would be hard for me to root for him too. I hope he doesn't end up in pinstripes.

I think Houston is more likely to get Kimbrel and Ross. I don't buy the Red Sox deal. If San Diego can move more parts in on deal with Kimbrel they will. If not, they may fall back to a smaller deal with us.

their prospects and get shut out. Frustrating for this year but it makes sense long term financially and philosophically. Now we have to hope some of these guys are actually impact players. But screw the innings limit and call up Severino. There is absolutely no evidence that innings limits limit injuries. But they do limit the Yankees chances of winning this year. The Yankees are winning nothing with this rotation. Put Warren back in or Mitchell for Pineda, call up Severino go 6 man or sit CC.

I dunno. They looked pretty good going into this year and it's not like Uehara has been the problem. :)
Great, he's signed for a few more seasons.
Greg from LI : 7/31/2015 2:08 pm : link
Still doesn't solve any of their problems, since Uehara has actually pitched better than Kimbrel. Kimbrel doesn't hit and he doesn't start.
Kimbrel has been excellent
arniefez : 7/31/2015 2:08 pm : link
but with the rotation and defense in Boston what is he going to close next year? The Red Sox are a total mess and it's fantastic.

they won't get shut out. Cashman often waits until the last minute to see what the lowest cost will be for what he wants. Not sure what they get, but I expect some kind of deal but not with the big prospects.
You never know with Boston
NYerInMA : 7/31/2015 2:10 pm : link
In 2013 they somehow won a WS with basically the same roster that has tanked every other year since 2011.
Some minor trade maybe
arniefez : 7/31/2015 2:12 pm : link
but a season changer at this point unlikely. Although that hasn't been Cashman's MO for years at the deadline.
I disagree that they looked good going into this season
Greg from LI : 7/31/2015 2:13 pm : link
The Sawx have been a bad team for three of the last four seasons. The fourth of those seasons was a massive fluke that scored them a title, but people have acted like that is the true abilities of the team. It isn't. It was an anomaly of monumental proportions, where virtually everyone on the team outperformed their projections, some to a huge degree. Rob and I riffed on this a bit the other day. At this point, the inescapable conclusion is that they are a bad baseball team, and for all the hype about guys like Betts and Bogaerts, their ballyhooed prospects are still question marks. Maybe they take off and develop like everyone says they will, but if they don't the Sawx are in big trouble for a while.

But that's the point - 2013 is the massive outlier. 2012 and 2013-14 is who the team actually is.

Jim Bowden on MLB radio heard that Cashman has made a trade and it will be announced in a couple of hours. He cannot confirm this. But, it is from a reliable source. He texted Cashman and did not get a confirmation from him. ( I think after the Mets/Gomez fiasco everyone is a little shy to commit to having firm commitments.

I personally am hoping for very little. The way I see it, we decided to make 2015 a rebuilding year. We (fans) have complained about the Yankees not keeping to a strategy. Now that our minors are building up and about to bear fruit, I don't want to trade that fruit off to give CC one last chance to earn a ring.

No offense to CC, but 2017-2021 is way more important to me than 2015 is.

I think this year we're playing with house money. Give it a run with the team we have and live with the consequences. Please don't give up someone who represents real promise now.

Well, sure. I just really meant they won the Dan Snyder award for champions of the offseason and had lots and lots of people predicting the postseason this year. Betts and Bogaerts are solid, they weren't the problem either.
