@SI_PeterKing: The deal averages $21.9-miilion a year, a smidge less than top deal in football, Aaron Rodgers’ $22-million per.
@ChrisBurke_SI: $60 million guaranteed for Wilson would be right in line with Cam Newton's new deal. Cam got $31 mil. fully guaranteed, $29 mil. for injury.
4 yrs sounds short though...figured the would lock him up long term...dont get it.
Because he's 26 years old and he will be 30 when he hits free agency, or is due a new contract. With the salary cap only going to increase, and QB contracts always being the highest paid, at some point, QBs will make $25+ million a year. He can wait out whatever deal that Andrew Luck will get which will break the records and he can piggy back on that at the tail end of his contract when the Seahawks will be forced to give him more money.
Thats gotta be near the top in $ per year and % guaranteed Â
Either way, though...

It seems they don't want to give him, or value him at, a similar contract level to those other mega QB contracts, and I understand the reasoning for.
love Russ, but I wonder if they wouldn't have been better off trading him for some crazy haul and maintaining cap flexibility.
Who makes that trade, though? You need to sign him to a huge contract, are you really going to give up players for the right?
I'm with Osi, what should be interesting from this is whether Seattle can remain competitive after forking over the money. Didn't seem to work too well for the Niners.

Ha, way to cherry pick one comment out of a 75 post discussion. The context in that quote being "it seems" based on the news that was out at that time.
In that same thread, I make numerous arguments on why they HAVE to pay him his fair market value.

because a QB hasn't signed the long term contract yet, even though it's not even training camp, as some sign that the team doesn't value that QB, I just can't take it seriously at all. These deals always get done. And the QB, assuming he's near elite status, is always the highest paid QB or close to the highest paid once the deal is signed. Always.
And then the fans chime in and say OMG I can't believe he's the highest paid QB he's not elite he's a system QB. Rinse. Repeat. Rinse. Repeat...on and on...
This deal was always a lock. The only debate was how long a deal it would be.
presuming Cam gets guaranteed 29 mil if he's injured (assuming the number goes down the later in the contract it is, but that's sorta immaterial). If Cam doesn't get injured, and Panthers decide to part ways, he doesn't get that money. He's only guaranteed his signing bonus. So it's hard to compare traditional guarantees of SB, and guaranteed salary with overall guarantees that aren't guaranteed to be paid if healthy. Or so it seems.
It didn't say anything about Wilson getting an injury guarantee. The SB alone is higher than what was reported before on his declined offer. But, the per year is less (prior deal rumored in 25 mil/yr range?)
Is Chancellor a FA anytime soon? Would love go see that guy in blue.
Quote:
Chancellor has three more years remaining on his current contract and stands to make $4.6 million this season. He signed a four-year extension in 2013 after he was named to his second Pro Bowl. Chancellor was a Pro Bowl selection again in 2014.

Actually, at the time it was reported that the yearly numbers were in place, but that the Guaranteed money was about 30 million less than what was eventually signed.
It also had several things written into the contract that allowed the Seahawks to cut him early in the deal, and not face cap penalty.
So I was basing my discussion, and really that was all it was, on the merits and reasons for both sides.
I wasn't claiming one side or the other to be right, or what the team was thinking. I was discussing, and encouraging discussion of, both.
i hear where you're coming from...but there were a lot of people actually buying into the floated theory that the Hawks were going to let Wilson walk or trade Wilson. It all but never happens. I can think of one high profile QB that was traded while still in his prime and that's Cutler. And Cutler was always overrated. I can't even remember which team traded for him when the BRoncos wisely cut bait. Was it the Bears or did they sign him as a FA...doesn't matter...
QBs never walk unless they are average or worse. The team literally has no choice. You can't let a decent QB walk for nothing let alone a guy like Wilson who while some may question his overall worth, one can't deny his impact on the Hawks. The guy's a damn good player.

All qbs better than russell wilson. and here is why.
1) he have the number 1 defense and one of the best rushing offenses. even mark sanchez went to 2 afc title games with that
2) his WRs suck? idk golden tate seems to be fine even without megatron there in detroit.
3) he doesn't pick apart defenses. he throws the occasional deep ball pretty well. however, it always off play action.
4) his defenses always put him in great position
5)The only great thing about wilson is he is careful with the ball...unless it is to win the superbowl. he runs a lot because he is not confident in his throwing ability to be a consistant passer. his OL is really good too. he scrambles around a lot to make plays broken then hits wide open guys. So if rivers was on that team, he would get sacks every other drop because those wrs get no separation or it seems that way.
yea i know he wins games, but so did tebow. he is a good player on a great team. u can insert any of the qbs i mentions above and this team would be 15-1 every year. AND BRETT FAVRE IS NOT A TYPO..
If wilson is getting 21.9 a year, eli will be the highest paid qb in history again. I would of traded him to a shitty franchise for a ton of picks.
He throws an interception to lose the Super Bowl on the last play of the game.....and you get a deal like this???? Poor decision, poor throw yet let's give him 60 million guaranteed!!! Poor business decision!!!
Yes, on a year to year basis, he gets top money. However total deal is worth 87 million... Most QB's these days are on the 100 million plus club on longer deals.
Wilson is considerably younger than those guys, as well.

Or in Seattle's case, once they can no longer pay that defense and beast mode has retired...they'll know if Wilson can carry a team on his back before re-upping him again.

I think this is important. Wilson is worth this money in a four year deal. They'll compete and reevaluate at the end of the contract. This team is a contender.
I bet her lawyer will figure out a way to argue that she's entitled to some of that.
Who is to say that SHE initiated the divorce?
It doesn't matter... if that lawyer is like most divorce lawyers (or at least, like my sisters' ex's lawyer), he'll be burning the midnight oil trying to figure out how his client is legally entitled to some of that money.

Not every borderline Top 12 QB should become the highest paid QB in the league or close to it when it's his turn.
Wilsson deserves it more than most, but what made the Seahawks so good is their defense + depth and we'll see how this contract impacts that.

I'm with Osi, what should be interesting from this is whether Seattle can remain competitive after forking over the money. Didn't seem to work too well for the Niners.
