Your bit of Skins schadenfreude for today

Greg from LI : 7/31/2015 10:05 am
The attendence for Redskins training camp was doubled by a AA baseball game.

Quote:
On Thursday, the first day of Washington Redskins training camp, the Redskins reported 3,341 fans at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center.

Later that night, the Flying Squirrels baseball team, a double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, announced a crowd of 6,028 fans, nearly double what the Redskins drew.

Maybe the most delusional fans in professional sports are starting to wise up? I suspected their numbers were way down, as I can see part of their training complex from my office window and it looked practically deserted compared to the past two years.
Those numbers seem off

I mean, if even a fraction of their 8 billion web visitors made it to camp...
Wondering what the Giants draw in Jersey
Big Blue '56 : 7/31/2015 10:06 am : link
compared to the sound numbers they had in Albany
doesn't matter
YAJ2112 : 7/31/2015 10:07 am : link
because 8.2 million unique visitors read that story
The Flying Squirrels...

And an awesome team. We, the residents of Richmond VA, would much rather have our corrupt city government invest in them, rather than the shitty, shady deal they made with the Redskins.
They are the #1 attended minor league team

In the eastern league. They do a great job - have been many times

if any of you Richmond, VA folks (especially those with kids) haven't been to the diamond to check out the squirrels you're missing out. they do a great job between the innings and you can seats for dirt cheap. great local beer too.
Yep
Greg from LI : 7/31/2015 10:17 am : link
The Squirrels are a top-notch organization with an excellent product. So, of course, the city instead gave the Redskins real estate worth an estimated $10-20 mill, spent $10 mill to build them a training center, and pays the Skins a half-million dollars every year to "defray the expense of holding camp in Richmond".

I hope Dwight Jones' kickbacks on that turkey were huge, because it would be even more depressing to think that the mayor was a cheap whore rather than a high-priced one.
Didn't Bon Secours stroke a $40 million check on the facility?
mattlawson : 7/31/2015 10:21 am : link
It was built in 10 months. The ballpark debate has been going on for well over 10 years with no end in sight
I don't know how much Bon Secours' end was
Greg from LI : 7/31/2015 10:25 am : link
The city's was $10 million, plus donating the land and giving the team tax breaks. It was an absolute disgrace, but then that's par for the course when it comes to Richmond metro politics.....which is why I live in Glen Allen.

At least the city council quashed Jones' crappy Shockoe Bottom stadium plan that no one except the guys who bribed him wanted. I'll bet the stadium ends up at West Creek, which works for me.
Jones is either a criminal....

or just a straight up idiot (trying to give him the benefit of the doubt since he's really both). Fuck the Redskins and the hassles that POS training facility causes me on my way home from work.

I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to see the Squirrels pack up and move along a la the Braves in '09. Richmond doesn't deserve them.

How about the money spent to bring this ONE TIME bicycle race to the city instead of moving along on a new baseball stadium? I love Richmond, but the city is run by a bunch of assholes.

See ya at the Squirrels game tonight! Low humidity and happy hour. A winning combo.
Good to hear about the local team...

I gave up on MLB years ago(just don't enjoy watching or following anymore)but I go to AAA/AA games as often as I can.

since I don't live there anymore I haven't been following, but what is the latest on a new stadium? I grew up going to Richmond Braves games (saw chipper jones and david justice and a few others play there) and would hate for the diamond to go, but its in such a crummy location.
The Redskins Training Facility...

was built on an ancient Indian burial site in the former capital of the confederacy by non-union labor.

Sounds like they're going to build in either Chesterfield or Henrico (Southside or the West End).

You and me both! Saw a ton of future big leaguers at the Diamond as a kid. Good times and memories of the R-Braves. Anyway....the mayor tried to force the Shockoe stadium proposal and wouldn't even consider any alternatives. It was unpopular with the fans for a variety of reasons (traffic, lack of parking, people don't want to take kids to the Bottom at night) and also was controversial because it would have been built atop a historic slavery site (Lumpkin's Jail). The city council ended up killing it earlier this year. Jones finally admitted defeat and they're now looking at sites in Chesterfield and Henrico. My guess is West Creek in Henrico, because it's a big parcel of unused land and has close highway access on 288.
Albany vs East Rutherford

Albany average 33,000 for the summer, NJ was 21,000 according to this article.
