NFT: 7/31 Harvey Day vs Nats

Shecky : 7/31/2015 1:20 pm
Getting this one started a bit early today. First off, tonight is the start of HUGE series. Secondly, seems some are sick of the other thread.

Season on the line here. And no one better than Harvey to start it off. Can they pull off the miracle and sweep the Nats? Win at least 2 of 3? Bigger than any acquisition they make today is the outcome of this series. Play well, and still in this for another month. Play poorly this weekend and it's all but over.
...
26.2 : 7/31/2015 1:49 pm : link
you guys have the pitching matchups this series to sweep. sundays matchup should be the only one we're favored in (J Zim vs. syndergaard) and even then its still close. Nats just need to take one game of the three to stay in 1st. perhaps the biggest series of the season so far!
Mets need to win 2 of 3 badly.
Victor in CT : 7/31/2015 1:50 pm : link
They can't drop this series.

arcarsenal : 7/31/2015 1:53 pm : link
Biggest series Citi will see since it was built.

The Mets have to make a statement this weekend. No way around it. Harvey has to be on point tonight.
I'm oddly nervous about Harvey
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/31/2015 2:01 pm : link
Feel like he gets knocks around.
Harvey needs to show up
gmen9892 : 7/31/2015 2:04 pm : link
Tonight. Last time he went out against them he didnt pitch too well. This might be the biggest game that Harvey's pitched in a Mets uniform so far. Need him to step up.
...
26.2 : 7/31/2015 2:08 pm : link
I'm a nats fan and we are pitching Gio tonight against Harvey. Trust me, you guys shouldn't worry at all. not that Gio sucks its that our BP kind of sucks (though adding papelbon did help) and Gio never goes very deep into games. your hitters just need to work the counts and Gio will be at 100 pitches in inning 5 or 6.
.
arcarsenal : 7/31/2015 2:09 pm : link
Pre-TJ I would be very confident about tonight. Harvey has been hit or miss this year though. I don't think he'll be 2013 Harvey again until next year. We see it in spurts but he's been hit harder in a few starts this year than we got accustomed to.

Really depends on which Harvey shows up tonight.
Im very worried about our bullpen

Even if we get a lead and Harvey pitched well

hearing you guys are going all in for Cespedes. there were some rumors we were in on him too, but it makes more sense for you guys.
Very curious to see Harvey's first fastball
Shecky : 7/31/2015 2:43 pm : link
Can he crack 100? My guess, 99.
Cespedes and TDA in the lineup?
Torrag : 7/31/2015 4:10 pm : link
Cespedes is in Baltimore can he arrive by gametime?

Now if only we could trade Collins for a bucket of chum we'd be contenders.
Final tweak...add one more bullpen arm

Conforto likely demoted so Cespedes can be used today
We are facing a tough lefty

That's why Duda and Conforto are sitting. Conforto is also 0 for the week!

These pitchers know we are on the verge of something special and want to be a part of it. It may not happen this year but we've given ourselves a chance with our deadline acquisitions.

Matt has had time to settle in and shake off the TJ rust. His last start was vintage Harvey. If we're going to make a run at this we need him to be that guy down the stretch. It starts tonight vs the Nationals.

We've protected Harvey and Thor as much as we could during the first half. If we're going to make a run we need Harvey/DeGrom/Thor starting 60% of our games.
We need Matt Harvey to be a fucking bulldog tonight.

Go out there and show this team that we're not going to make their lives easy and that we want this division. This is such a huuuuuuge chance to make a serious statement.

Balancing act.

The way he's pitching, how can you shut him down? The last few starts he's been almost every bit as good as DeGrom. Every win matters. But you're right, the innings matter too.

Glad Flores is still a Met too. The kid has a ton of potential and will be a player in the near future. We all know it's a business, but it's got to be tough on some of these young players to hear you name in trade rumors or to be traded at a moment's notice.

Speaking of DW, has he progressed to doing enough "baseball activities" that the insurance payments have stopped?

Anyone know how that works?

Saving Duda for a key PH spot maybe?

He'd be due up 4th in the bottom of the 9th.. if just one runner gets on, there's the key spot.

LOL, I'm just guessing why Collins may have, not defending it. I said at the start of the game Duda should have been in the lineup all along. He is hot and this game to important not to start your best players.
I don't understand the apprehension towards Duda against LHP...

I know its painful but I seriously
ZGiants98 : 7/31/2015 10:41 pm : link
think every game from here on out with the Nats is going to be like this. This is a playoff atmosphere with two very good teams battling. The Nats just got Rendon, Zimmerman, and Werth back. They've reloaded. We've reloaded. We are going toe to toe with the team Vegas picked to win the World Series. The last series was like this too.

Get 2 of 3 from these bastards and the soft part of the schedule is coming up.

Crazy. He went from getting booed earlier in the year to now being a cult hero! I don't know who's starting and who's not but either way we are going to have some serious firepower coming off the bench over the next couple months. We are about to live in a real world where our bench looks something like Uribe, Johnson, Flores, Cuddyer, Kirk, Plawecki.

He won't get the abats. Looks like he's platooning with Johnson at 2B and giving Tejada a day off maybe once a week. If Wright comes back, Murphy will move to second and Flores really won't have a spot. I still think Flores is a nice piece for us though. If Wright needs to miss time next year Flores might end up having to play third.

Yeah more next year and for now he could still be a clutch bat off the bench. I definitely think Flores has been our most clutch hitter this year and I don't think its close.

Every position has depth right now
ZGiants98 : 7/31/2015 11:54 pm : link
especially at 3B and 2B

3B. Wright, Uribe, Murphy, Johnson
SS Tejada, Flores
2B Murphy, Johnson, Flores
1B Duda, Cuddyer, Murphy

C TDA, Plawecki

LF Cespedes, Cuddyer, Conforto
CF Lagares, Kirk
RF Granderson, Cuddyer, Conforto

pretty nice depth right now.
Holy shit!

That was awesome! Did anyone else see Wilmer popping the Mets on his jersey after rounding third? This guy loves it here - it reminded me of when John Starks used to point to the New York on his jersey after hitting a clutch shot in the 4th quarter.

What an awesome game and tremendous job by DMM and all the Mets fans at Citi for responding the way they did to Wilmer, especially that play he made in the 1st and his first AB.

So many candidates now I have a hard time believing someone won't...Cespedes, Duda, TdA, Uribe, Murphy, Granderson, Flores, wow.

Over the last 3 years I am 3-0

2013 - Jon Niese shutout vs. Philly
2014 - Bartolo Colon shuts down Oakland
2015 - Noah Syndegaard's last start
Has the Cespedes roster move been announced yet?

I guess the decision is DFA Campbell and let Conforto stay up until Cuddyer gets back or send Conforto to AA or AAA?

I guess it makes more sense to just send him down and maybe let him get some game experience in RF? I'd certainly prefer to leave Campbell on the side of the road somewhere, but if Cuddyer is back soon maybe you just wait to do it then and make the likely inevitable move now?
Campbell

Is really really bad. Props to him for lasting this long with so much playing time for a playoff contender though

Send Conforto down. No use having him be a bench player. Chicago did that with Kyle Schwarber. Campbell is awful at the plate but he can play 1B, 3B and LF
Agreed Mike - I think that's the move
Eric on Li : 8/1/2015 10:24 am : link
only question is AA or AAA. At this point Vegas doesn't seem like it has any value and it's further away, but I guess you might as well let him get his confidence up hitting .350.
Agree
DanMetroMan : 8/1/2015 10:25 am : link
With Mike and Eric. Not enough abs to keep Conforto up and bench Player doesn't make sense.
I don't believe that anyone is a better fan

no contracts, no who is taking steroids, just great pitching, best fans in the world who get it by the standing O's for Flores all night, great play in the field and the Hollywood walk off by Wilmer and the true joy for him from his team and fans. If this comes off sappy, then I'm a sap. LGM!!

WELL SAID. HH, thanks for being the only rational one the past couple of days (and Z, of course). Threads were so brutal to read, but your comments were the only unemotional ones. Though the rest of the threads were actually pretty freakin entertaining to read...

Just saw this. Thanks Sheck.
If Conforto does go down
ZGiants98 : 8/1/2015 12:11 pm : link
I call him back up Auguest 31st so he can be eligible for the playoff roster. I think it would be sweet having him off the bench in the postseason if it's possible.
I also send Conforto
ZGiants98 : 8/1/2015 12:14 pm : link
To AAA to join his buddy Nimmo. If we felt he's ready for the majors he needs to go to AAA. I honestly think the pitchers are more polished and use more off speed stuff there. Seeing Herrera and Conforto skip AAA and struggle tells me these guys need some time there, regardless of the PCL.
No brainer to me..
arcarsenal : 8/1/2015 12:28 pm : link
Just send Conforto down for August so he can keep playing every day and then call him back up for the push in Sept.

Yup. But if you call him up on September 1st when rosters expand he wouldn't be eligible for the playoffs unless he was replacing an injured player that was. So thats why I hope we call him up a day earlier if its possible.
Right.
arcarsenal : 8/1/2015 12:57 pm : link
If he's coming back up for Sept, you do it with the intention of having him for the postseason too if we make it in.
Need to make room
