Good deal. No Wheeler included
Victor in CT : 7/31/2015 4:14 pm : link
got him cheap and still have a chance to sign him as an FA if they want.

haha
speedywheels : 7/31/2015 4:15 pm : link
Of COURSE fucking radar doesn't like the deal.

Once a contrarian....
Dude
ZGiants98 : 7/31/2015 4:15 pm : link
A right handed power bat in the middle of the lineup is what we've needed for so long.
Yoenis
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/31/2015 4:16 pm : link

Fulmer isn't 'cheap'
Torrag : 7/31/2015 4:16 pm : link
1st round pick has been dominant this season and only getting better as he went. Did Sandy have to do it? Yes imo. That doesn't mean it was a bargain.

Can you refute the points I made or not. Somehow I doubt it.

Of re-signing Cespedes, I read he has an odd contract stipulation that he cannot re-sign with a team between five days after The World Series and May15th of the next year which is why Detroit wanted to trade him or they couldnt re-sign him.

Link - ( New Window )
Oh my effing good lord
Headhunter : 7/31/2015 4:18 pm : link
Lets just never trade anyone in case they might be great. let's just rip on SA & the Wilpon's, that is more of our comfort zone that to take chances and try to win
'84
Torrag : 7/31/2015 4:19 pm : link
Detroit wanted to trade him because he wasn't eligible for a QO. Which means they would lose him for nothing. No compensation whatsoever.

LOL.. radar goin' against the grain! Can't believe it!
What a fucking
Headhunter : 7/31/2015 4:21 pm : link
buzz killer and he does it to kill the buzz on purpose
I
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2015 4:21 pm : link
like the move but I'd be absolutely stunned if he remains a Met. 7 years 140-ish is probably his next deal, if not more.
Dan we can only hope
Torrag : 7/31/2015 4:23 pm : link
That would certainly be the end of me referring to our ownership as the Wilponsis. I'd welcome it haha.

sshin05 : 7/31/2015 4:23 pm : link
to lose Fulmer, his star is on the rise. But i think we have enough pitching depth with wheeler, niese, and montero to absorb that.

Agreed. But this is a guy who has been quite honest about wanting to have a shot at being a FA so you are looking at a bidding war with a GM who admits he hates megadeals with a cheap owner. It's realisitcally 7-8 years 20 per, I'd love to be shocked but I would be just that.

The article I linked mentions that as well. I just found that contract stipulation pretty weird. Ill take him as a rental and as Dan says the Mets will likely not pay him the money he is looking for.
i would laugh
sshin05 : 7/31/2015 4:24 pm : link
if the tigers were also paying half of whatever yeonis is owed.
Not happy at first
KWhite2250 : 7/31/2015 4:24 pm : link
Cause fullmer but its a god damn big bat and the way we seem to be spitting out pitching prospects, we'll restock
No disrespect to anyone here
Headhunter : 7/31/2015 4:25 pm : link
but i'll deal with his status for next year when it comes to pass
they
sshin05 : 7/31/2015 4:26 pm : link
drafted a bunch of lefties this past draft and got some ok guys lower minors. Molina is the next big arm but he's like TJ territory.
If the Mets had a 3-4 game lead on the divsion or wild card
Kevin999 : 7/31/2015 4:26 pm : link
I would really like this trade. However, this team just lost 2 of three at home vs the Padres and will lose a good trade chip in Fulmer for nothing if we dont make the playoffs. I would have preferred trading Wheeler/Fulmer for a non rental but that would mean the owners would have to commit to spending more money.
you can say
sshin05 : 7/31/2015 4:27 pm : link
cespedes was arguably the best bat traded at the deadline. So for what we gave up, its understandable.
The dude was about a .750 hitter hitting in normal lineups
chris r : 7/31/2015 4:30 pm : link
the last two years. Now he hits in stacked lineup and of course does better and we give up our best pitching prospect hoping for that level of production? And just for a rental? It doesn't make sense to me. Bruce I could see because he's not a rental.
Or maybe we win the damn
ZGiants98 : 7/31/2015 4:31 pm : link
World Series and Conforto replaces Cespedes next year. Or maybe we trade Granderson and re-sign Cespedes. Who knows? That's next year. Can't say this organization didn't take a chance which is what we all wanted. If we lose the trade we lose the trade but everyone's been screaming for EXACTLY this!

The fact that this is a NY team worth over a billion dollars and we're concerned about being able to re-sign him is a shame.
Sandy has had a strong trade deadline
Torrag : 7/31/2015 4:33 pm : link
It really isn't debatable. He's made us contenders without giving up the farm. There is half an hour or so left if the deadline is EDT correct? Add a bullpen arm and let's go for it.

Well that's my point. If he performs and does really well and earns his money we SHOULD be thinking "he's coming back". Yankees, Cubs, Rangers, Red Sox, Dodgers etc those fans expect that. Ours are expected to accept the opposite. He hits .350 with 8 homers down the stretch "we just think the contract was too rich for our blood".
We gave up our best pitching prospect as a team
Chris684 : 7/31/2015 4:35 pm : link
that currently fields a rotation of 4 legitimate #1/2 starters and another #2/3 who will ultimately be our 5th starter. Plus Jon Niese, plus Rafael Montero.

We were also fielding a AAA lineup for most of the season and have managed to stay within 3 games of a division lead.

If you "don't like" this trade, you are clueless OR you are just ok with saying "next year" every year.
If we truly were going to pony up
ZGiants98 : 7/31/2015 4:35 pm : link
200 million for Cano I have a feeling we can sign Cespedes, especially with so many players coming off the books. Trade Granderson and we'll have the funds. But who cares about that now? Our lineup just went from the joke of the league to damn respectable. TDA and Cespedes tonight is a massive boost.
.
arcarsenal : 7/31/2015 4:35 pm : link
Cespedes was the most valuable player on the Tigers thus far in 2015. Give me a break with this "he was only hitting well because of a stacked lineup" narrative. Cabrera has missed like 25 games and it didn't make any difference in his production.
Deadline

has passed

Absolutely. Didnt mean to imply I wasnt happy with the trade, I am thrilled. This should be a fun end of the season.
Hats off to SA since 10 days ago
Headhunter : 7/31/2015 4:36 pm : link
he has added Clippard, Uribe, Johnson & Cepedes and did not give up Wheeler or Rosario or any ML talent. Great job,
Also a very good chance
ZGiants98 : 7/31/2015 4:36 pm : link
Fulmer never cracked our rotation. We still have Montero and others to fill in if the "fab five" miss time here or there.
Cespedes turns 30 in October
Vanzetti : 7/31/2015 4:37 pm : link
I don't know that I would want him on a seven-year deal.

Totally different team
Rflairr : 7/31/2015 4:38 pm : link
with Cesepedes, TDA, and Uribe. Totally different.
one thing I love about Mets threads
Kevin999 : 7/31/2015 4:39 pm : link
if you don't agree with everyone's opinion you are clueless and stupid. None of us are pro scouts and can truly evaluate how good someone will become, hell even pro scouts get that wrong, see deGrom. Yet we are idiots if we don't like that same thing some other web posted doesn't agree with.
TDA back
Headhunter : 7/31/2015 4:39 pm : link
Wright progressing, long way to go. If this was the last week in September the Mets would have a shot, it's not yet August 1
Obviously not worried about our rotation per se but...
Torrag : 7/31/2015 4:40 pm : link
...counting on Montero for anything is getting dicey after more shoulder pain and yet another examination which revealed nothing.
This is dumb and simply not true

There are plenty of diverse opinions and back and forth discussion.
And I have t heard anything about cash
ZGiants98 : 7/31/2015 4:41 pm : link
So if that's the case we are adding more to the payroll this season then we would have with Gomez.

He batted .750 the last two years? Fascinating....

And it's debatable that Fulmer is our "best" pitching prospect. He's one of a handful, but can't possibly say unequivocally he's the "best".

But even if he was - they have Harvey, Thor, deGrom now, plus Matz on the mend, and Montero (hopefully this shoulder thing heals). Plus Niese.

And no one is expecting him to match his Detroit totals. But he'll help this lineup signficantly. Yes, he's a free swinger, but he'll get some protection in this lineup.

Dont humor him. He's a fucking idiot.
I think that getting a 26 , 27year old
Headhunter : 7/31/2015 4:42 pm : link
pitcher back that pitched to a 3.6 ERA in the NL as the # 5 starter is pretty awesome

Losing Fulmer hurts. But he will probably need TJ surgery at some point (LOL!)

I'm referring to the next 3-4 years when Gee, Colon, and Niese are gone and Wheeler is back. We have a ton of 5 starter types we can use right now. And Matz should be back soon.
Forgot to add
speedywheels : 7/31/2015 4:43 pm : link
You have to give to get. Deal from your strength, which is pitching in Mets case.

It ain't rocket science...
Sounds
DanMetroMan : 7/31/2015 4:44 pm : link
like he may be available to pinch hit late but not expecting him to play today.
Bad deal for the long term,
Ira : 7/31/2015 4:44 pm : link
but it does help this season.
