Wrestling legend Roddy Piper has died at the age of 61 .. TMZ Sports has learned.
Piper -- born Roderick George Toombs -- passed away from natural causes at a home in Hollywood.
Piper was a wrestling icon -- one of the biggest stars in the WWE back in the '80s.
Piper had been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2006 ... but last November he said he was cancer free.
Roddy was admitted into the WWE Hall of Fame back in 2005 ... and was one of the top 50- villains in the history of the WWE.

...I was just youtubing his first Piper's Pit episodes today as I was feeling nostalgic. He recently had a disagreement with Steve Austin about his podcast. Really, really sad day.

Roddy was really fucking nice when I met him. It sucks for anybody to die, but it really sucks to see somebody who was super nice to you die. Met him & Savage a few times. Always extremely nice to me.

You can die of natural causes at any age.

I've been youtube-ing Tuesday Night Titans and it had Rowdy Piper on it and he slapped Lord Alfred Hayes. It was funny when the audience did cat calls when Piper went to take off his kilt.

He was the greatest heel the WWF ever had. Without him there is no Hulkamania.

I am very saddened by this. R.I.P. Roddy,
I just assumed when I first saw this...

and mostly so bc he played the heel so well...I still crack up thinking about him clowning around in the ring and in Pipers Pit.
Great guy
Phil in LA : 7/31/2015 9:12 pm : link
I used to hang out with him at the Silver Spoon out here. Great stories and a terrific guy. Rest in peace.
Go watch some old Piper in MSG
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 7/31/2015 9:12 pm : link
I don't there exists a better heel than early 80s Piper, and him going after Cyndi Lauper, Mr. T, etc, helped make the first WrestleMania possible.

They Live is also a personal favorite. Put on the glasses!

Wish he was in his prime for the Attitude Era
dpinzow : 8/1/2015 10:12 am : link
He was really the first Attitude Era superstar, just a decade early. Had Roddy Piper been 10 years younger he would have ruled the Attitude Era like Stone Cold did
He lived much longer than the others who admitted to roid use
JonC : 8/1/2015 10:23 am : link
RIP to one of the greatest heels, especially given I was a huge Snuka mark.
They Live is one of those movies I'll watch 'till the end

Best "heel" moment. Shaving the Haiti Kid's hair to look like Mr. T.
When he and Chavo Guerrero were about 20 or so
Phil in LA : 8/1/2015 11:30 am : link
they ran a long term feud that you could follow in NYC on Lucha Libre on the Spanish channel. It was fantastic.

Back in the `70s there was this "scientific" wrestiling trend that people were really into for awhile, It was a lot of mat work and no hitting sort of. They'd been having matches like that more in the AWA and NWA than it what was then the WWWF. I guess the 60 minute Bruno/Pedro Morales thing was the WWWF's experiment with it.

Anyway, the Lucha Libre stuff was at that time controlled by the NWA, so they had various TV belts, but no version of a world champion.

So, they concoct this Scientific Championship, and it's gonna be Chavo agains Roddy. Everyone thought Chavo would win because of his virtue. And he had his father the "legendary" Gory Guerrero in his corner coaching him.

So Chavo and Piper start wrestling - and Piper was really good - but eventually Chavo seems to be out wrestling him. So Piper slaps Gory Guerrero in the face which causes Chavo to lose his mind and get disqualified.

Just awesome.
Pretty good list of Roddy's non-Wrestling

And I don't even speak Spanish. Channel 41 (Paterson NJ) on your UHF dial...Olympic Auditorium in LA, the late, great Jimmy Lennon was the ring announcer...good times.
He's the reason I watched WWF as a kid

Sad... I've heard from many that piper was a solid dude. Sad to hear this news.

Always saw him in the magazines and became a fan before even seeing him wrestle ,Was so happy when he first came to WWF in 1984 but was shocked he was bad guy because from the magazines he was a good guy ,Pipers pit was awesome weather it was beating up jobber Frank Williams or asking Andre the Giant Whereeeee doooooo you comeee frommm and bashing snuka over the head with a coconut or starting the feud with Cyndi lauper which lead to wrestlemania he was a legend before his time ..So much great stuff ,The War to settle the score ,beating up some guy outside a gym in the city a week before wrestlemania ,the boxing match vs Mr T ..I could go on and on …RIP RODDY
RIP
